Introduction

• Eneco has been granted the rights to apply for

permission to develop an offshore wind park.

• This will be located off the Dorset and Hampshire

coasts and to the west of the Isle of Wight.

• Eneco has undertaken an appraisal and concluded that

a project of between 900MW and 1200MW can be
developed. This will provide enough renewable power
for between 615,000 and 820,000 homes.

• The final design, layout and ultimate capacity will be

determined only after comprehensive consultation.
Zone 7:
West of the Isle of Wight
The Crown Estate awarded
the area, currently known
as Zone 7, to Eneco. This
was after consultation
with stakeholders and the
completion of a Strategic Reproduced by permission of Ordnance Survey on behalf of HMSO.

Environmental Assessment
• This project will deliver UK-sourced, clean
by the Department of Energy
and efficient energy, making a valuable
and Climate Change (DECC). contribution to national carbon reduction
and climate change targets

• Over the next three to four years, Eneco

will carry out surveys, environmental
assessments and full consultation with
key parties. It is expected that the wind
park will be operational in 2019
Deciding where to develop?
The area selected as the location for the wind park is called
the ‘Development Area’. To make a decision on where this
should be located Eneco considered a number of factors.
They included: Other examples of factors we assessed
• environmental constraints such as are included later eg fishing and birds.
protected area and the visual impact
of the turbines; Some of these factors apply to the whole
• stakeholder activities taking place in the of the Zone and others relate to specific
Zone, such as ferry routes and military areas. When these factors were difficult
activity; to overcome, they were identified as hard
• local residents opinions on where the constraints and influence the location of
wind park should be located; and the Development Area. Further details
• the different construction methods of these constraints are provided later.
required in different areas of the Zone,
due to the underlying geology, This information will be submitted
eg foundation type alongside Eneco’s planning application.
Fishing
Eneco has been analysing available data on fishing activity
in the local area.

Birds
The Zone bird survey traverses a 500 km transect and
observers pay special attention to auk species (guillemots
and razorbills), petrels and shearwaters.
