UNIT – I
Analysis of Stress
State of stress at a point, stress notations, stress transformations, principal stress ,invariants,
Mohr’s circle, Maximum Shear stress ,Octahedral Shear stress ,Mean stress deviatoric stress,
some special states of stress.
Analysis of Strain
State of strain at a point and notations, invariants, normal strain, shear strain, volumetric strain,
strain components, Strain displacement relation, strain compatibility equation, some special
states of strain.

UNIT – II
Equillibrium Equations
Differential equations of equilibrium, Compatibility equations, Shear strain relations for linearly
elastic solid, generalized Hooke’s law, Stress function, Anisotropic elasticity, composite elastic
constants & stress-strain relationships for large elastic deformation.
Two Dimensional Elasticity Problems
Plane stress and plane strain-simple 2-D problems in polar & Cartesian co-ordinates, Airy’s stress
function in rectangular, angular& polar co-ordinates, solution of axisymmetric problems: thick
cylinders, curved bars, stress cone due to presence of a circular hole.
UNIT – III
Torsion
St.Venant’s approach, Prandtl’s approach, membrane analogy, torsion of straight bars, elliptic &
circular sections, torsion of thin rectangular sections, application of energy method to torsion
problem, torsion of thin tubes, elementary problems of elasticity in 3-D.
UNIT – IV
Energy Methods
Strain Energy, Principle of virtual work, energy theorems, Rayleigh Ritz Method, Finite difference
Method, Application to elasticity problem:solving beams, buckling and torsion by energy
principles.
Theories of Failure
Significance, Haigh-Westergard stressed space representation of Von-Mises and Tresca yield
criteria, Effective stress and effective strain, Yield surfaces of Tresca and Von-Mises.
UNIT – V
Plastic Behavior of Metals
Introduction to ideally plastic solid, elements of plasticity, the theory of plastic flow, Prandtl-Revss
& Levy- Mises constitutive equation of plastic flow, equation of plasticity, Plastic stress strain
equation, Elastic perfectly Plastic behaviour, Plasticity with hardening, kinematic hardening, Work
of plastic deformation, elastic –plastic problems in bemding, torsion & thick cylinder.
