WARHILL HIGH SCHOOL, WILLIAMSBURG-JAMES CITY COUNTY, VIRGINIA

1,250 student capacity I 240,695 SF
The vision for this two-story facility was created during intense Design Workshops with participation from the community

CARTER WOODSON MIDDLE SCHOOL ADDITION/RENOVATION, HOPEWELL, VIRGINIA

Moseley Architects was commissioned to help transform Carter G. Woodson Middle School into a state-of-the-art facility to
meet increasing student enrollment without demolishing the structures. Of utmost importance to the city was creating a new
main entry, eliminating the need for mobile classrooms, and linking the facility to the existing campus. The school had multiple
entrances and the office was obscured in the middle of the school grounds. The office was relocated near the newly·created
prominent main entrance. A circulation spine uses large expanses of clerestory windows and exposed steel construction to
create a more inviting environment. In addition to upgrading the existing classroom spaces, the existing administration and
media center spaces were converted to classroom space. A total of nine new classrooms were added, which include general
use spaces, science rooms, special education rooms, and spaces for art and chorus. Site development and improvements
included new parking for staff and visitors, a new bus loop, and landscaping. Additionally, a public "rotunda" was created,
which creates a gathering area for the students and provides opportunities for collaborative learning.
