1. ORGANIZING COMMITTEE
3 - SECRETARY: Maria Cristina Mendes, Iago Cabanelas Sheyla and Santa Isabel
4 – SUPPORT GROUP
In most emerging countries Bioenergy involves two important fields, characterized by different
levels of technological development. On one hand, the traditional use of biomass for direct
combustion remains an important contribution to energy supply in rural areas, although with
high conversion inefficiency, generating social and environmental problems. Even though, the
modern use of biomass has been expanding rapidly, as a source of commercial energy, for the
production of biofuels for transport and industry, both, the traditional and the modern use of
biomass face technological challenges that pose risks to sustainability.
The International Workshop on Bioenergy, focusing on efficient use of biomass at all levels, is
an event of international scope, and aims to bring together the community involved with
bioenergy, for sharing information, ideas, project construction and planning of actions aimed to
meet the social, environmental and technological challenges, in support to the Government
Programs for the area. Despite the theme of "Bioenergy" be in evidence, there is a growing
demand for an event bringing together experts in the environmental aspects of bioenergy, which
serve to strengthen the idea of sustainability and its inclusion in the technological, economic and
social decisions related to this field.
The Workshop on Bioenergy intends to fulfill this function, by increasing the insertion of Bahia in
the process. For this purpose, aims to strengthen scientific and technological interaction with the
productive sector, for the transformation of academic production in goods and services as well
as intensify the interrelations of research groups for the establishment of dynamic and flexible
technology platforms that can make feasible projects of greater complexity, and provide more
meaningful practical results. The event was planned as a workshop where discussions on the
various sectors of influence of biomass energy, can lead to results of immediate application in
the area. Except for the opening conference, all presentations will be made in the form of
roundtables, facilitating dialogue and interference from the audience. Involve thematic sections,
including technological, economical, environmental and social sustainability as the main topics
so that discussions of the issues at the end of each session, can lead to the formulation of
guidelines for policies in the sector.
Roundtables:
1) Use of waste for bioenergy: technological and social challenges.
2) The biomass and the transition to a low carbon economy.
3) The prospects for biofuel production from second and third generation
4) Industrial development of bioenergy: problems in technology, regulation and management.
Leading researchers will defend each subject. Among the foreigners we emphasize:
Prof. Giovanni Sansone, senior scientist at the Faculty of Science, University of Naples
"Federico II",Professor at the Faculty of Sciences, Laboratory of Physiology of Aquatic
Organisms. He is expert in cultivating organisms for various purposes, including for bioenergy.
Dr. Giovanni Sansone has developed along with Dr. Mosé Rossi University di Napoli Federico
II, technology for using wastes as raw material for cultivation of microalgae generating oil for
biodiesel. This technology is of great social value, has immediate applications and is also useful
for the pharmaceutical and food industries.
Dr. José A. Perales works on photobiodepuration processes at the Centro Andaluz de Ciencia
y Tecnología, Universidad de Cadiz, España. He has given important contribution in the
application area of environmental engineering to the design and operation of equipment for
handling and using wastes for bioenergy production.
Dr. Augusto Comas González works at the University of Havana, Cuba and is considered one
of the most knowledgeable of microalgae Botryoccocus, the only Gen..capable of producing
hydrocarbons, which can provide bio-fuel for the aviation industry.
Among the invited Brazilian researchers, most have developed technology registered as patents
or plays an important role in the management of bioenergy government or business.

An event as proposed, allows, more effectively and quickly to achieve goals that may lead to
technological development by adding value to waste products used for bioenergy production, by
representing prospects of investment opportunities, by providing solutions for the problems
related to the processes of bioproduction, as others, related to the environment. In this
workshop the proposed themes will be discussed by foreign professionals, teachers and
researchers in our institution and stakeholders seeking interaction and enhancement, so that to
achieve the goals of sustainable production and use of biomass by innovating processes,
Holding an event of this magnitude in Salvador is also a great opportunity to reduce regional
disparities in research and post-graduate studies, because it will foster community involvement
and interaction of local scientific experts with the rest of Brazil and other countries, contributing
to the consolidation of research groups and master's and doctorate from the region.
