Треба передовсім сказати про
суботи й неділі, кожна з яких
присвячена якійсь події з
життя Церкви, Ісуса Христа,
його Пресвятої Матері або

І якраз шостий тиждень святої Марія Єгипетська
40-ці відзначається тим, що
духовно готує нас до двох
великих і світлих подій з життя Ісуса Христа:
воскресення Лазаря, якому присвячена субота перед
Квітною неділею, і тріюмфальний в'їзд Христа Господа
до Єрусалима, який Церква празнує у Квітну неділю.
Тож погляньмо дещо ближче як на саму седмицю
Квітної неділі, так і на святкування Лазаревої суботи та
її духовне значення.
У наших церковних книгах цей тиждень має
назву седмиці ваїй (себто пальмових гілок), квітної або
квітоносної. Головна тема богослужень цього тижня —
це завершення Великого посту, приготування вірних до
великого чуда воскресення праведного Лазаря і до
тріюмфу Квітної неділі.
У п'ятницю цього тижня властиво закінчується
Великий піст. Субота Лазаря вже поза постом святої 40
-ці. На цьому наголошують богослуження тижня. У
п'ятницю на стихирах вечірні співаємо: "Довершивши
корисну для душі 40-цю, дозволь нам, Чоловіколюбче,

When protesters in Bel-
grade converged on the patriar-
chal headquarters of the Serbian
Orthodox Church in April 2007,
they were angry about proposed
liturgical reforms. The reforms
included an instruction to priests
to recite aloud some previously
silent prayers and to leave the
holy doors in the icon screen be-
tween the altar and the congregation open during the cele-
bration of the Eucharist. A photograph in a Serbian news-
paper showed an activist holding an icon of St. Sava, the
most important national saint of the Serbian Orthodox
Church, in one hand. In the other she held a placard:
“Master: Do not turn us into Roman Catholics!”
What brought that Serbian to put Sharpie to card-
board was not a dispute over doctrine, but instead a fear of
the invasion of a culture perceived as alien. Upon closer
questioning, the protester might have argued, “Catholics are
heretics!” For many Orthodox Christians, however, such a
claim is a secondary argument shoring up the main point,
which is that Roman Catholics and Orthodox are just dif-
ferent. For many Orthodox, Rome’s alleged heresies are
inevitable because of differences in outlook and traditions.
Even if theological issues could be settled, that deep sense
of otherness would remain a serious obstacle to reunion.

У перших віках християнської віри монахи
мали такий звичай, що на час Великого посту багато з
них ішло поза монастир на самоту чи в пустиню, щоб
там у молитві й пості проводити час святої 40-ці. А в
п'ятницю перед суботою Лазаря вони знову повер­
талися до своїх монастирів. Тому в четвер на каноні
утрені Церква звертається до них: "Ви, що в пустинях і пророків, ані якийсь дух з другого світу, — це був Сам
печерах, зійдіться і прийдіть, щоб стрінути піснями
грядучого на осляті Господа слави" (Четверта пісня).
На великій вечірні перед Квітною неділею всі монахи,
зібравшись разом, уже радісно
співали: "Сьогодні благодать
Святого Духа нас зібрала, і всі,
взявши хрест Твій, кличемо:
"Благословен, що йде в ім'я
Господнє, осанна во вишніх".
Головна особа церковних
богослужб цієї седмиці — людей.

Витаніє, вітчизно Лазаря, бо
Христос, прийшовши до тебе,

Лазаря".
У відправах цього тижня ВОСКРЕСЕННЯ ЛАЗАРЯ
Церква часто закликає вірних, щоб
добрими ділами гідно готувалися до зустрічі Христа:
"Несучи гілки добрих діл і пальмами чистоти, всі
приготуймося на зустріч Христа, що надходить до
Єрусалима, як Бога нашого" (Дев'ята пісня канону
утрені понеділка). "Злучивши любов з милосердям,
спішімось, вірні, щоб послати їх Христові на вмоління, вбити" (11, 47-48 і 53). "Тоді первосвященики ухвалили
щоб і нас воскресив із гробу прихованих похотей
наших" (Четверта пісня канону утрені четверга).
ЗНАЧЕННЯ ЧУДА ВОСКРЕСЕННЯ ЛАЗАРЯ
Ісус Христос здійснив багато чудес за час Свого воскресив чотириденного Лазаря, у свій час і нас
життя та жодне з них не було таке велике, як
воскресення Лазаря.
Це чудо було для багатьох дуже переконливим
доказом Христового божества. Один з Отців Церкви

каже: "Спаситель вирвав дочку Яїра з рук смерти,
юнака з Наїну із зубів смерти, а Лазаря зі самого нутра
смерти". Ця подія становить кульмінацію Христового
об'явлення за допомогою чудес. Тут Христос виступає
як Пан життя і смерти, як Переможець смерти, як
всемогутній Бог. Відомий церковний письменник і
аскет о. М. Мешлер, розважаючи про велич цього чуда
і його дію на жидів, каже: "Це вже не був Ісус із
Назарета, ані могутній учитель, ані один з давніх
Живий Бог. Одне його слово звенить через безодню
вічности і знову приводить душу з кінця потойбічного
світу. Промінь блискавки проходить крізь темноту
гробу і засвічує в мертвих
костях іскру життя" (Життя
ГНІХ у Розважаннях, т. II, с.
103-4). Це чудо є водночас
символом славного
Христового воскресення і
прообразом воскресення всіх
Велич і слава цього
чуда були безпосередньою
причиною Христового
тріюмфального в'їзду до
Єрусалима у Квітну неділю.
Захоплений нарід вітав Христа
не тільки як свого пророка, але
і як свого Месію, свого Царя і
Господа.
Укінці воскресення
Лазаря прискорило муки і
смерть нашого Спасителя.
Багато людей увірували в
Христа та йшли за Ним, а це
занепокоїло жидівську
старшину, яка скликала раду.
"Зібрали тоді первосвященики та фарисеї раду, —
читаємо у святому Євангелії від Йоана, — і заговорили:
"Що робити нам? Силу чудес отой чоловік робить!
Якщо залишимо його так, то всі увірують у Нього...
Від того дня, отже, ухвалили вони Його
і Лазаря вбити" (12, 10).
Хай це величне й дивне чудо воскресення
Лазаря скріпить і нашу віру в Христове божество та
наше власне воскресення. Той самий Христос, що
воскресить до щасливого й вічного життя. Він сам нас
запевняє: "Я — воскресення і життя. Хто в мене вірує,
той навіть і вмерши — житиме!" (Йо. 11, 25). ♦

about Orthodox Christians, however. Catholic attitudes
likely reflect the casual assumptions typical of a dominant
culture. In its recent document on the nature of the church,
the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith reasserted
Catholic teaching that the Orthodox belong to real
churches, lacking only communion with Rome to be com-
plete. The external affairs spokesman for the Moscow Patri-
archate, Metropolitan Kyril of Smolensk, responded to the
document by stating, “It helps us see how different we
really are.” Even when Rome tries to emphasize the close
relationship between Orthodox and Catholics, its Eastern
dialogue partners take these statements as a sign of dis-
tance.
Are Catholics and Orthodox truly that different?
For half a century now the two sides have been referring to
each other officially as “sister churches.” A list of theologi-
cal sticking points looks relatively short, and the Catholic
understanding of papal supremacy is generally agreed to be
the greatest difficulty. Old disputes over the filioque clause
in the Nicene Creed (“the Holy Spirit proceeds from the
Father and the Son”) and the modern Roman dogmas of the
Immaculate Conception and Assumption, both about Mary,
are usually agreed by ecumenical cognoscenti to be subspe-
cies of the problem of papal assertions. No one thinks this
division can be solved entirely on a theological level. There
are political wounds to be healed as well, especially over
perceived proselytism by Catholics, most notably in the
case of the “Uniate” Eastern Catholic churches.
Such theological and political problems are the
bread and butter of official ecumenical dialogues, but much
more rarely discussed are the profound cultural differences
of the kind the Serbian protester feared. I do not mean
“culture” in an ethnic sense, but as shorthand to describe a
mode of being Christian, and such differences are most pro-
found on the level of ecclesial culture. Ecclesial cultures
develop distinct theological ideas, but these theological as-
pects are not simply thought; they are also deeply felt at the
level of popular piety and practice. Questions of ecclesial
culture tend to be underweighted in ecumenical dialogue.
Perhaps this is not surprising, since finding a theoretical
common ground that is intellectually defensible may prove
easier in practice than helping hundreds of millions of the
faithful receive such a resolution.
Living What One Professes to Believe
How can a church call on others to reunite with it
on the basis of practices and beliefs its own members treat
with apparent contempt? The question cuts both ways, be-
cause Orthodoxy’s vaunted freedom and principle of oiko-
nomia depend on the personal holiness of those managing
the household of faith. Where sanctity and justice are lack-
ing, the overshadowing chaos and venality may be all that
Catholics or the Orthodox faithful will see. For either side

to present a good case for its own ecclesial vision, it must
live that vision, not merely argue it. A real key to ecumeni-
cal progress—the conversion of the other—begins with
conversion of the self.
The notion that personal conversion lies at the heart
of the ecumenical enterprise is far from new. In its “Decree
on Ecumenism,” the Second Vatican Council referred to
“change of heart” and “holiness of life” as “spiritual ecu-
menism,” calling it “the soul of the whole ecumenical
movement.” In A Handbook of Spiritual Ecumenism, Car-
dinal Walter Kasper wrote, “only in the context of conver-
sion and renewal of mind can the wounded bonds of com-
munion be healed.” This conversion, he continues, might
best be fostered within communities of faith: parishes,
prayer groups, religious houses, monasteries or youth or-
ganizations, where the organic link between personal holi-
ness and ecumenism might be taught and expressed in prac-
tical ways. Only at the grass roots can Catholics or Ortho-
dox begin that long, slow process of reacquaintance without
which the most optimistic pronouncements of ecumenical
dialogues will prove pointless.
I belong to an Eastern Church united with Rome,
and believe that fundamentally the Catholic and Orthodox
visions are capable of communion with each other. But as
an Eastern Catholic, I can also speak with some authority
on the tensions that arise when we try to make that com-
munion a tangible reality. With respect to those tensions,
the Catholic side is overly optimistic. The toxic reaction
Eastern Catholics (especially in Eastern Europe) often pro-
voke by their mere existence should alert our Roman broth-
ers and sisters to a widespread sense among the Orthodox
that the differences between us are too great to be papered
over. Any attempt to do so may appear inauthentic and
even mendacious. Even when Orthodox leaders attempt to
give voice to this unease in more moderate ways, they tend
to provoke ecumenically minded Catholics to anxious per-
plexity. A perfect example is the negative reaction that the
Ecumenical Patriarch, Bartholomew I of Constantinople,
received at Georgetown University in 1997 when he said of
Orthodox and Catholics: “The manner in which we exist
has become ontologically different. Unless our ontological
transfiguration and transformation toward one common
model of life is achieved, not only in form but also in sub-
stance, unity and its accompanying realization become im-
possible.”
That protester in Belgrade would have agreed
wholeheartedly with the underlying sense that Catholics
and Orthodox are different in fundamental ways. It is un-
derstandable that ecumenical theologians and ecclesiastical
diplomats want to conduct ecumenism on the level of what
unites us, but unfortunately our differences remain. In heal-
ing these divisions, especially those that exist on the cul-
tural level, theologians and diplomats can do only so much.
We spiritual ecumenists, faithful Christians, must do the
rest.♦

St. Mary of Egypt
The Fifth Sunday of the Great Fast is dedicated
to the memory of one of our more famous Desert Moth-
ers - St Mary of Egypt..
The tropar of today’s Liturgy reads: “In you, O
mother Mary, was restored the likeness of God, for you
carried your cross and followed Christ. You taught by
your deeds how to spurn the body, for it passes away,
and how to value the soul, for it is immortal. Wherefore,
your soul is forever in happiness with the angels”.
Today’s icon on the bulletin shows St. Mary re-
ceiving the Holy Eucharist from St. Zozimus. Withered
from the elements, emaciated and at the point of starva-
tion, she spent 47 years in total solitude in the deserts of
Palestine. She is presented as an example of repentance.
An example perhaps to wonder at and admire - but not
an example to imitate.
The past Wednesday and Thursday her extraordi-
nary life is read as part of the Divine Office. I think we
could call her life as an Olympic championship of prayer
and penance.
She recounted to St. Zozimus: “for years I fed on
whatever and anything that can be found in the desert.
The sun scorched me, and then I froze. I fought many
terrible temptations. But the power of God guarded my
sinful soul. I have incorruptible food from God, my
hope of salvation. I cover myself with the Word of God:
“for not by bread alone will man live.”
We all find this a difficult lesson in repentance.
There is something in the tropar that might be a lesson
for us: “in you the likeness of God was restored”. Now
this is the “bottom line” of what the Great Fast is all
about. And this is the lesson of her life for us. We, like
her, are all called to become living icons of God in our
life. Through self-examination, prayer and penance we
ask the Holy Spirit to restore us to that beauty to which
we are called.
Jesus came to earth to tell us: “You give me your
time, and I will give you my eternity. You give me your
weary body, and I will give you rest. You give me your
sins, and I will give you forgiveness. You give me your
broken heart, and I will give you healing. You give me
your emptiness, and I will give you my fullness. You
give me your humanity, and I will give you my divinity.”
We do not have to withdraw to a desert to have the shat-
tered, broken image of God within us to be restored, We
have the help of the Holy Sacraments. Through Baptism
we were set free from the bondage of sin and made par-
takers of the Divine nature of God. We were quite liter-
ally “clothed in Christ”.

Holy Chrismation became our personal Pente-
cost. We were anointed and sealed with the gift of the
Holy Spirit. I like to think of us as becoming potential
spiritual powerhouses.
We share in the immortality of Christ as we ap-
proach the Holy Eucharist, the very Body and Blood of
Jesus. We are divinized as we bring into ourselves His
life.
Through a frequent reception of the Sacrament of
Repentance (Confession) sin is forgiven, healing to the
broken parts of our lives is given to us. Such a touch of
Christ’s forgiveness and healing is to be received fre-
quently during the year. Thus the shattered, broken im-
age of God within us is restored.
Thomas Merton wrote in his book No Man is An
Island: “Each one of us has some kind of vocation. We
are all called by God to share in His life and in His king-
dom. Each one of us is called to a special place in the
Kingdom. If we find that place we will be happy. If we
do not find it we can never be completely happy. For
each one of us, there is only one thing necessary; to ful-
fill our destiny, according to God’s will, to be what God
wants us to be.”
God wants us to be like Him, to share in His
love, glory and peace.
April, 16th, Lazarus Saturday: The somber qual-
ity of the Great Fast gives way on this day to a day of
joyful celebration in anticipation of the glorious Resur-
rection Day. On this day white and gold vestments re-
place dark red ones.
The troparion tells us: “O Christ, our God, when
you raised Lazarus from the dead, before Your Passion,
You confirmed the future resurrection of all. We too,
like the children of old, carry before You symbols of
Your triumph and victory and cry out to You, the Con-
queror of Death: Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is He
Who comes in the name of the Lord!”
Christ is the Conqueror of Death- He is the Con-
queror of our death! In the epistle for the day we are
promised by God: “I will never forsake you, nor shall I
abandon you”. Facing death, illness, and pain we can
say: “The Lord is my Helper, I shall not fear”.
The icon of this day is one of my favorites.
Lazarus is wrapped up like a mummy and stands before
the black hole of death and the grave. Jesus stands regal
and majestic. The icon represents the moment the Jesus
reaches out His hand and commands: Unbind him and
set him free!
And Jesus will say to each of us at our death : I
set you free! You are now unbound from the restraints
and burdens of life- be free to walk in the Kingdom of
My Father! ♦

Long-time friend of St. Joseph Parish, Hieromonk

Holy Resurrection Monastery, in Valyermo, Califor-

Commemoration of the 25th Anniversary

The Chicago-Kyiv Sister Cities Committee will
commemorate this tragedy in a program which high-
lights response and recovery efforts.
The formal speaking program will begin at 5:30
p.m. on Thursday, April 28.with the event concluding
with a moment of silence and screening of the docu-
mentary film, "Block Four”.
