Introduction:
April 4th, 2011

The students of Delhi School of Professional Studies and Research, PGDM section –
A were taken on an industrial visit to Mother Dairy, Patparganj. The largest milk
producer and distributor in India. This is an Indian Company. It is carrying out its
operations since 1974.

The Technology:

• The manufacturing unit has got the most advanced technologies to

manufacture India’s only Probiotic Drink.

• The bacteria that is used for making the drink is imported from Japan. It is
then sterilized and then taken for further conversion.

• The bottles for filling in the drink are being manufactured in a machine
costing Rs. 11 lakhs, and can produce 11,000 bottles per hour.

• The final bottle sealing and packaging is finally done. The machinery so used
can pack and seal up to 45,000 bottles per hour. It is at this stage that the
bottles are taken for the samples.

Findings:

• The company entered in India in 2005 and thus, is here, capturing the
health market.

• It is taking a lot of efforts to educate the Indian customers as to “ Why

yakult is important for them and their family?”

• India is a huge market. Analyzing the prospective market in India the

brand has pushed it selves to it.

• The company has got plans to expand more. But is not able to do so
because of the lack of funds.

• Yakult has not attained its break- even point yet. It is still covering up the
costs so incurred.
• It is pushing it selves in the market with hardcore advertising and the
BTL(Below The Line promotion) activities such as putting up canopies at
most crowded places, mall activities etc.
