î researcher is conducted experiment on reduction of dye solution using H2O2 in a laboratory. The
experiment conducted in a reactor consists of Erlenmeyer flask, heater, and magnetic stirrer. In
order to trigger free radical mechanism of H2O2 the reactor equipped with UV lamp which is turn on
along the reaction time. The temperature for the reaction is set at 60oC and because of some
limitation, the reaction temperature need to be checked regularly and manually by using
thermometer. Each experiment run will be take place for 2 hours and during this reaction, the
researcher need to maintain the temperature u . The research equipment is depicted on figure 1.

÷esearcher conducting reduction of dye solution experiment using H2O2 in a lab-scale reactor
consists of Erlenmeyer flask, UV lamp, magnetic stirrer and heater. The researcher controls the
reaction temperature at 60oC by checking it regularly using thermometer for 2 hours per running
sample.

H2O2 is strong oxidizer, corrosive to eyes, nose, throat, lungs and gastrointestinal tract. If its contact
with combustibles may cause fire.
     u
1.p The researcher should use appropriate goggles (i.e. chemical splash-type monogoggles).
2.p The laboratory should supply good air circulation (ventilation) to minimize the H2O2 vapors.
3.p For body protection, the researcher should wear impervious clothing.
4.p For hand protection, the researcher should wear approved gloves (i.e. Gloves made from
neoprene).
5.p The researcher should use NIOSH/DHHS approved self-contained breathing apparatus
(SCBî).
6.p Do not use cotton, wool, or leather while conducting experiment.
7.p Do not use any form of air-purifying respirator (î ÷) or filtering facepiece or dust mask.
8.p Store H2O2 in a cool place away from direct sunlight and combustible materials.
9.p Support lab work area with a water spray and appropriate extinguishing media (i.e. water).

     u
1.p The experiment equipment must be equipped with UV-blocker or UV-absorber (i.e. organic
material, polymer, paint).
2.p To prevent eye and skin injuries, sources of UV light must be conspicuously labeled with a
warning attached to the housing of the source. The warning sign should state: 6
   !"#6 $%$&!
! '
3.p The researcher should wear appropriate personal protecting equipment. ersonal protection
that is appropriate includes welder͛s masks, goggles and face shields.
4.p While checking the reaction temperature, the researcher must turn off the UV source in
order to avoid overexposure in UV and direct contact with eye and skin.
5.p The researcher must follow the operating procedure or lab work instruction.
6.p ÷eplacing the manual temperature checking using thermometer with digital or automatic
temperature control device to minimize contact with UV.

Worker could get sudden heat contact with the heater and with the vapor from the Erlenmeyer flask
when measuring the temperature.

1.p The heater should be isolated using appropriate isolation material.
