“Honey, I shrunk the ???”
“Honey, I shrunk the dog”!! Four or five months ago, I reported
that The Jet was a burly 105 pounds. Truly a Jumbo Jet or at least
a close facsimile. Consultation with the vet people suggested
that The Jet was overly Jumbo and should be shrunk and
downsized. After months of kibble reduction and more exercise
he recently checked in with a weight loss of 10 pounds. From
Jumbo he has gone now to being the Big Jet. Following further
consultation with the vet folks, it became evident that they want
to see a Fighter Jet, and so the kibble reduction and exercise will
continue for probably another 10 to 15 pounds!!! The strange
thing is . . . the Jet doesn’t act any hungrier now than he ever did.
Which means, he still lets you know whenever he thinks that
kibble time is close by getting very bouncy!!
“Honey, I shrunk the Wife”!! Yes siree, The Jet is not the only
one on reduced kibble and increased exercise. The missus has
been losing a few pounds herself!! Unlike The Jet, however, she
hasn’t been anywhere near as friendly come meal time. I get
particularly concerned though, when I find her sniffing around
The Jet’s food dish. If it ever came to a kibble fight, I am afraid of
what damage might happen to my Boy!!
“Honey, I shrunk the Mikie”!! Yup . . . me too. Right along with
The Jet, I have dropped about 10 pounds also!! It just didn’t seem
fair that he was targeted for kibble reduction all by himself. True
leadership is all about NOT expecting others to suffer while we
continue to stuff ourselves at the kibble dish. True leadership is
not concerned about getting rid of other’s fat, while ignoring
our own!!
“Honey, I am going to shrink the trees”!! I have been studying up
on modern woodlot management and one of the key findings, is
that trees need to be thinned out just like carrots. Trees that are
growing too close together tend to be more deformed, weaker
and more subject to disease. By spacing trees properly the
overall health of the forest can be improved and overall wood
growth per acre or hectare can be improved significantly. This
means that healthy forests are removing more carbon from the
atmosphere. Which is a good thing!! Perhaps, more on this topic
in a followup “Ravings”.
So during the next few months I am going to be very busy, but
the most important project will be to keep The Jet leaner and
faster than the missus, so that he can consistently win the race
to the kibble dish!! 800

KV Woodworkers Club
The KV Woodworkers Club is a non-profit organization
operating from Rothesay High School.
Happenings: The bench project is now complete, and a bit of
money has been raised for the benefit of our members. Thanks
to the many club members who have been diligently working on
this fundraising project. The project for Rothesay High School,
math department is now finished. Thanks to Brian Chapman.
Some other projects in the shop include cabinets, clocks, tables,
a Lazy Susan, turned bowls, bedside tables, and picture frames.
This Week’s Tip from Chips: Router direction - a router bit turns
clockwise when looking down at the router. If you move the
router into the wood, against the bit’s cutting edges the forces
of the bit cutting into the wood, will hold the router against the
guide, whether it is a fence, a template guide or a bearing guide,
allowing for even and smooth cuts with little effort. If you move
the router into the wood, against the back of the cutting edges,
the forces will push against the wood and tend to move the
router away from the guide, with poor finished cuts.
About Our Club: Members have access to the school shop
facilities, 24/7. New members are welcome. Annual fees are
$220. For more information, call Jim at 849-3794, Pat at 849-
0400, or see Bob or Larry at the shop (1st door on the right from
the East side entrance to the school, across from Rothesay arena)
on Tuesday and Thursday, mornings & evenings; or Saturday
mornings. See you in the shop.

Kv high – bye bye birdie
Kennebecasis Valley High School, under the new direction
ofRachelle Lanigan, is excited to be presenting the swingin’ 50’s
musical “Bye Bye Birdie” from Tuesday, April 12th - Saturday,
April 16th with curtain time at 8:00pm every night.
This is the first show under the new direction of Mrs. Rachelle
Lanigan and promises to be an extremely successful debut for the
first time director. Mrs. Lanagan has handled the choreography
of KV musicals for the past two years. The dancing in this
production is high energy and will have audiences rockin’ and
rollin’. The choreography has been handed over to Courtney
Arsenault, one of the four grads who take the stage as leads for
their final time. Jaryd Stanley makes this fifth appearance on
the stage as Albert, the mama’s boy manager of the wild rock
star Conrad Birdie played by the one and only JD Kent. Riley
Livingstone plays Rosie.
Bye Bye Birdie tells the story of Albert Peterson, the manager
of the wild and irresponsible Conrad Birdie and his secretary,
Rose Alvarez. It all starts when Conrad is drafted into the army.
Conrad travels to the town of Sweet Apple to bestow a kiss upon
Kim MacAffee and turns the town on its head in a striking
similarity to Beiber fever. 229

New location for Community
Foundation
The Greater Saint John
Community Foundation has
recently located to newly
renovated, highly visible and
more accessible space in Uptown Saint John at 76 Princess Street
in the Trinity Dental Clinic Building. The Greater Foundation,
which supports registered charities within a 50 km. radius of
Greater Saint John, will receive applications for 2011 grants until
5:00pm, April 15th, 2011 at their new location.
The Foundation recently implemented changes in the process
whereby they receive, evaluate and process applications for
grants. A Grants Committee is in place, with board members
and additional community representation, which reviews
applications, based on what they consider to be the best practices
of colleague foundations across Canada and after reviewing
quality of life data in the Foundation’s annual Vital Signs Reports.
It makes recommendations to the Foundation Board. The
application form has been posted on the Foundation website,
www.saint-john-foundation.nb.ca and can be downloaded from
it.
The Anniversary Grant of up to $30,000 will also be awarded
this year to a charitable group seeking funding for a unique
initiative with significant community impact, which will address
a priority community need, as identified in the Foundation’s Vital
Signs Reports. This is in addition to over $200,000 anticipated in
grants to be distributed to local charitable causes in 2011.
The Foundation operates frugally, with about 1.5% of its assets
for administrative costs annually. For that reason, it hopes a
donor of a boardroom/meeting table and chairs may materialize
to help keep their operating costs to a minimum. It is grateful for
the large number of donors who contribute time, resources and
funding to continue to support the wide range of local charities
which benefit from the Foundation.
The Greater Saint John Community Foundation serves as a
trustee for charitable, educational and cultural purposes. It
administers funds, large and small, donated by public-spirited
citizens for the benefit of the people of Greater Saint John. 813

HRAA news
Fish ‘n Jam: Fish ‘n Jam is back to a regular
schedule, each Wednesday at 7:00pm. Fly
tying instruction is available on Wednesdays,
just call the centre to be sure someone will be
available if you’re planning on coming out to
tie flies.
Annual Anglers Draw: Tickets are now
available. Tickets ($10 each or three for $20)
are now available. You can get your tickets from Jim Gillespie, or
contact the centre at 832-1230. Draw date is planned for April
23rd.
Coffeehouse: We have our next coffeehouse slated for Saturday,
April 30th, with entertainers TBA. We hope to see another great
turnout!
News from the Riverbank: Water levels are remarkably low for
this time of year, just under two meters on our gauge. The warmer
temperatures have brought the water temperature up slightly,
varying around 3c. Remember that angling season opens Friday,
April 15th on rivers, and Sunday, May 1st on lakes in this part
of the province. As usual, we ask all anglers to exercise caution
when fishing in the lower part of the Hammond in April, since
our black salmon (kelts) will still be in the river. And, of course,
the Hammond is closed for all salmon fishing, including black
salmon. If you do fish the lower river, we strongly urge that you
use single, barbless hooks so that the salmon can be released
unharmed if you do happen to hook one.
One more reminder: wear your PFD’s, especially in cold water
conditions we have in the early season!
Warning to local anglers and boaters: HRAA’s popular and
frequently-used boat launch was damaged during the high water
March 12th, and is not usable. Stay tuned, we’ll provide more
information as it becomes available. Its one of our priorities to
have the landing back in operation as soon as possible.
Kayak Fishing Tournament: July 16th & 17th. The new regulations
for the tournament are now available in the events section of our
website. This year, there will alternate launching locations, but
all activities will take place at the centre.

KV Crusaders Column
By Maria Debly
The week of April 4th-9th was Blast From
the Past Week. Every day was a dress-up
day, and students wore retro costumes
from decades past. Monday was 90’s day,
Tuesday was 80’s day, and so on. Because
there was no school on Friday, the final
day of the countdown was on Monday.
Opening night for the Spring Musical, Bye
Bye Birdie, is today, April 12th. The show
runs until Saturday, April 16th. Tickets are $14 for orchestra,
$12 for balcony, and you can purchase them at Benjamin Books,
Past Perfections, Kennebecasis Drugs, L’il Shop of Science, and
the school box office. All shows start at 8:00pm.
Up-to-date articles about sports, arts, academics, and day-
to-day activities at KVHS are all in the school newspaper,
The Valiant. The newspaper is written and edited by students
in the Journalism classes. This year’s editions of The Valiant
are all online, and issues from previous years are also on the
Edline page. In the next few weeks, the newspaper may also be
switching from biweekly to weekly editions. 205

Fundy Paddlers Club 2010AGM Report
A brief note from the Fundy Paddling Club Inc Annual General
Meeting which was held on February 21st, 2011.
2010 paddling trips began with the New Year’s Day paddle with
six members braving the cold and snow to paddle the Marshes
at the Irving Nature Park in Saint John. Trips were planned for
most weekends from early April until late October. Some of
these trips were joint paddles with other clubs, notably with the
River Runners from Moncton; we were encouraged by these
trips and are planning for more this year. Highlights of last year’s
paddles include a trip down the Pollett River lead by members
from River Runners Club; and a trip through the Reversing Falls
on Canada Day. Some of our trips have become yearly events,
like the Fiddler’s on the Tobique Bloat near Plaster Rock and the
paddle to Caton Island the site of the first European settlement
in Canada in 1611. A very interesting paddling schedule has
already been drawn up for 2011.
Training remains a big part of the FPC. To this end we have
offered a subsidy to members who took approved Paddle Canada
courses both in canoe and kayak. In house training included
preparing a cold weather pack, map & compass, first aid and
other training as requested by our members. Another activity
that remains, a favourite, is Paddle making with members
making eight new paddles last year.
FPC members extended their outreach to include members
and guests of Read Saint John. FPC members took them, many
who are new Canadians, for a paddle on the Hammond River.
We again hosted a group from Key Industries for a paddle and
BBQ as well.
Membership stood at 76 members for 2010. AT the AGM
meeting we had an election of officers. The Executive for 2011

Rothesay-kings rotary
The Rothesay-Kings Rotary Club is proud of its history as a
sponsor of the Rotary Girls Choir for over 20 years. The choir was
started in 1989 by Dr. Kevin Langford, who was teaching music
at Quispamsis Elementary School at the time, and Dr. Langford
has been directing the choir ever since. The choir provides an
opportunity for some 36 girls to develop their musical talents
and abilities, and the choir has been present at many festivals
and special occasions. This summer, for instance, the choir has
been invited to sing at Disney World in Orlando, a week long
event centered around Canada Day on July 1st.
Recently, members of the Rothesay-Kings Rotary Club
witnessed the presentation of a cheque to the choir, affirming
the club’s long-standing commitment to the youth of the
Kennebecasis Valley and to the musical excellence nurtured by
Dr. Langford.
The members of Rothesay-Kings Rotary Club wish the girls of
the Rotary Girls Choir every success in Orlando and hope that
every one of them will return with fond memories of their once-
in-a-lifetime experience singing at Disney World. 204
