RE: Required Summer Reading for AP English and other Matters

Congratulations and thanks for your interest in the AP English program here at San
Marcos. This course is designed for people who already love to read and write about
literature, and who are ready to take on the challenge of college-level assignments and
expectations while still in high school. Santa Barbara School Board policy states that
all students who enroll in AP English are required to take the AP test in May, 2010.
Also, once you are enrolled and sign your contract agreement as an AP student, you
may not drop the course. See your counselor if this requirement is a problem.

You must also keep reading logs on the following two works assigned for summer
reading as part of the AP curriculum, along with one other book from the list (on back),
or of equal literary merit. The two required novels are :

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini 1984 by George Orwell

READING LOGS on the three books – MANDATORY - Your reading log will be your
best tool for review in preparation for the "open ended" essay question on the AP exam.
Here are some suggestions regarding what to record in your reading logs.

 • Only summarize what is essential for you to remember - key characters, events,
ideas, etc. Take thorough notes on WHAT'S HAPPENING To WHOM and WHY
as you read. Write AS YOU READ, not just at the end of the novel.

 • Spend most of your time writing about what the book or play brings to mind :
thoughts about issues, questions about characters or themes, ideas about author's
intentions, connections with other things you've read or experienced, predictions
about what will happen, and any other aspects of the book that you find
confusing, interesting or brilliant.

 Consider the author’s writing style: the point of view employed, the level of
vocabulary used, the way the characters are presented, figurative language, etc.

Bring your completed reading logs with you on the first day of class. If you don’t have
AP English until the spring, your logs are still due on August 24th, 2008, and must be
turned in to Mr. Hobbs in room D-5 or to Mr. Zaunius in room E-6.

Please let us know if you have any questions about the course, the AP Test, or the
required summer reading. (jhobbs@sbsdk12.org, or dzaunius@sbsdk12.org)
