SIR SYED’S VISION
Sir Syed described his vision of the College/University he proposed to establish in an Urdu article
written sometime in 1872, and re-printed in the Institute Gazette of April 5, 1911.
'I may appear to be dreaming and talking like Shaikh Chilli', he wrote, 'but we aim to turn this M. A.
O. College into a University similar to that of Oxford or Cambridge.
'Like the churches of Oxford and Cambridge, there will be mosques attached to each College.
There will be boarding houses, in which students will be provided with a suite complete with a bath,
a study and a retiring room. The boarding house will have a Common Hall and a common dinning
room. There will be a playground and a swimming pool attached to it. There will be four bungalows
constructed for the residence of the Principal, the Head Master and other Professors. The College
will have a dispensary with a Doctor and a compounder, besides a Unani Hakim.
'It will be mandatory on boys in residence to join the congregational prayers (namaz) at all the five
times. Students of other religions will be exempted from this religious observance.
'Muslim students will have a uniform consisting of a black alpaca, half sleeved (chugha) and a red
Fez cap. All students shall be required to put on a pair of socks and shoes of western style. The use
of (dhoti) will not be permitted in the College.
'There will be fixed times for study, dinner, lunch, breakfast, bath, change and for every other
activity.
'All articles of sport will be provided for. Bad and abusive words which boys generally pick up and
get used to, will be strictly prohibited. Even such a word as a 'liar' will be treated as an abuse to be
prohibited.
'They will have food either on tables of European style or on chaukis in the manner of the Arabs.
This will be decided by the students themselves, by a majority of votes. They will have special food
once a week, to be decided by majority every week.
'Furniture, bedding, etc. will be supplied by the College. The services of bearers, servants,
watermen etc., will be provided and supervised by the boarding house authorities. Students will be
required to possess sufficient quantity of clothes to keep them neat and clean. They will not be
allowed to put on gaudy, or such fine clothes as might expose their body.
'Smoking of cigarette or huqqa, and the chewing of betels shall be strictly prohibited.
'No corporal punishment or any such punishment as is likely to injure a student's self-respect will be
permissible. Stock punishment such as 'standing' or extra home work or class work only will be
meted out to erring students. Boys misbehaving in society will be sent down for a specified period.
'It will be strictly enforced that (Shia) and (Sunni) boys shall not discuss their religious differences in
the College or in the boarding house.
'At present it is like a day dream. I pray to God that this dream may come true'.

INTRODUCTION
The Institute
The Aligarh Movement piloted by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan awakened the Muslims of the
Sub-Continent from their deep slumber and created among their rank and file the
mobility which led to the establishment of the famous Aligarh Muslim University. Ever
since the creation of Pakistan, Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys’ Association of
Pakistan has been striving hard to disseminate the Aligarh spirit throughout the country
with the objective of inspiring national unity, tolerance, universal brotherhood and
achievement of learning at the level of excellence and research.
The Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys’ Association (AMUOBA) serves its members
not only as a forum to commemorate occasionally some moments of the youthful past
but also as a cultural institution dedicated to the promotion of the high ideals that the
Aligarh Movement stood for. The Aligarh Muslim University was the focal point of the
movement for preserving Muslim identity, inspiring Muslim unity, inducting all round
educational progress and preparing people for sharing the responsibilities of freedom.
The same ethos and vigour characterize the Association which continues to endeavour
for the projection of the ideals and values of the Aligarh Movement. The establishment
of the Aligarh Institute of Technology was an humble accomplishment of this endeavour.
The Aligarh Institute of Technology (AIT) established in 1989, is located on plot No. St-
16 in Block-5 at University Road, (opposite Aziz Bhatti Park), Gulshan-e- Iqbal Karachi.
It is an outstanding Institute for boys and girls. It provides theoretical and practical
courses of instructions in a number of technologies including Electronics Technology
and Computer Science leading to the Diploma of Associate Engineer (DAE) from the
Sindh Board of Technical Education. The AIT has been making consistent efforts to
assess the future needs of Technical Education in Pakistan. A 3-year post SSC, DAE
Computer Information Technology Programme was started in the academic year 2001-
2002. A 3-year post SSC, DAE Electrical Technology was started from the academic
year 2004-2005. Another 3-Year post SSC, DAE Bio-Medical Technology was started
from the academic year 2005-2006.
The AIT has also introduced degree courses and is imparting higher education. As a
first step, BCS Degree Programme in Computer Science affiliated with the Sir Syed
University of Engineering & Technology was started in 1998. In 2001, the three years
BCS Course was upgraded to 4-Year BS Degree Programme in Computer Science BS
(CS) to bring it at par with international academic standards. The courses for higher
studies in different subjects including the Master’s Programme in Computer Science
which have now been approved by all forums such as Board of Advanced Studies &
