SEMESTER 3: BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (PRIMARY


SCIENCE) 2008

COURSE TITLE : THINKING AND WORKING SCIENTIFICALLY

CREDIT POINTS : 3 credits (45 hours)

1. SYNOPSIS

This course enables students to acquire scientific skills which include the basic and
integrated science process skills as well as manipulative skills. Techniques in applying
science process skills through investigations/experiments will enhance the teacher’s
competency in helping children understand science concepts.

2. TOPICS AND TIME ALLOCATION

1. Overview of course 3 hours


2. Manipulative skills 6 hours
3. Basic science process skills 21 hours
4. Integrated science process skills 15 hours

Total 45 hours

3. LEARNING OUTCOMES

i. Develop a critical appreciation of the basic and integrated science process skills
and their practice in the teaching of science in primary schools
ii. Demonstrate competence in designing approaches that support children in
developing their science procedural skills and understanding
iii. Explain manipulative skills as psychomotor processes which are developed
through scientific investigation

4. ASSESSMENT

Course work : 50 %
Examination : 50 %

5. TEACHING AND LEARNING APPROACHES

A mix of lectures, tutorials and discussions.
