Checking the stator windings

using diagnostic measuring

and test techniques
Our high-voltage electrical machines have been in reliable use around the
world for decades. They are operated in many applications in almost every
sector. Additionally, our special electrical motors, used in rolling mills, ships
and power stations etc., set themselves apart as a result of the highest
degree of reliability and long service life.

Designed and constructed as a high-quality technical product in line with

your individual requirements, each of these motors is of considerable or
even central significance when it comes to operating your complete plant.
As a consequence, it is important to secure continuous, disturbance-free
operation even after many years.

In addition to regular maintenance, a qualified winding check plays

an important role in securing the availability of the motors over the
complete life cycle of your plant or system.

Using state-of-the-art mobile measuring

equipment and qualified evaluation, these
types of winding checks and diagnostics can
now also be performed locally on site.

through winding checks:

Spare Parts

• Weak points and other effects due to ambient

conditions in the winding can be detected at an early stage

• Cost reductions due to planned corrective measures

• The lifetime of electrical machinery can be maximized

• Documentation is provided with recommendations on measures as well

as data archiving for comparative measurements and trend analysis

The following diagnostic measures are
available:
1. Polarization index test

■■ The polarization index provides information regarding the level

of humidity in the insulation or conductive dirt on the winding
overhangs in the machine
++ Effects on the insulation behavior as a result of the environmen-
tal conditions can be identified
++ Additional measures are performed

2. Winding insulation resistance measurement

■■ The winding insulation resistance is measured, phase with respect

to ground (enclosure, laminated core) or with respect to other
phase conductors with the feeder cables disconnected
■■ The insulation resistance is a measure of the insulating capability
of the winding insulation with respect to ground or the winding
elements with respect to one another
++ Moisture or condensation can be identified as well as conductive
dirt; this can reduce the permissible insulation resistance and
damage the insulation system

3. Loss-tangent test (dissipation-factor test) (tan δ)

■■ Loss factor as a measure of the total losses in the insulation when

applying an AC voltage
++ Essential supplement to the partial discharge measurement
++ As a result of any change (trend analysis), a statement can be
made regarding the condition of the winding insulation
++ It is possible to make a differentiation between the individual
loss components

4. Diagnostics to identify the state of the winding insulation

by measuring partial discharge (corona)

■■ Partial discharge within the insulation or between insulating

surfaces and ground potential
■■ Depending on the position, discharge level and frequency, the
insulation ages and it is possible that the lifetime is shortened
++ Local weak points can be identified using partial discharge
diagnostics
++ Trend statements can be derived regarding the insulation aging

Partial discharge measurements are recommended for high-voltage

electrical machinery with rated voltages of 3.3 kV and above; in indi-
vidual cases, they are also recommended for low-voltage machinery.
