Introduction
Welcome to the 2010 edition of the Avaya Data Solutions
Guide. With the acquisition of Nortel Enterprise Solutions at
the end of 2009, Avaya inherited a world class data portfolio,
building on the strength and comprehensiveness of its offer to
the market.
Reduce Costs
• Avaya data switches have been carefully designed to minimise
power consumption, providing lower running costs and a
reduced carbon footprint, and requiring less cooling.
Independent testing has demonstrated Avaya switches
consume up to 40% less energy than competing switches from
other vendors.
• Lower the operational costs in services and equipment - with a
total cost of ownership 25% lower than other vendors.
• Simple two tier architecture easier to install and troubleshoot.
• LAN switches capable of supporting real time applications
without deploying complex Layer 3 switches at the edge.
• Use of stackable switches at the edge allows a “pay as you
grow” network deployment.
• Quickly deploy new revenue generating multimedia
applications, such as contact centre capability for more staff,
without having to incur the cost of subsequent upgrades.
• Achieve better utilisation of the network through the use of
SMLT technology, IP Multicast and better unified network
management tools.
• Enable scaleable growth with more efficient use of bandwidth.
• Reduce skilled staff costs through use of simpler configuration
and maintenance.
• Minimal staff training requirements as configuration uses
industry standard CLI commands.
Channel Leverage
• A lot of customers are already using Avaya voice products that
could allow you to sell a single vendor voice and data solution
(or upgrade).
• Best in class technical offering as supported by independent
analysts, e.g. Tolly Group.
• Differentiated offering in a highly competitive market (i.e. 30+
Gold resellers of Cisco).
• Cisco designs are complex to implement compared to Avaya.
To achieve rapid failover, Cisco rely on a combination of
protocols at both layer 2 and layer 3. Layer 3 to the edge
requires the enhanced images to support routing protocols
which doubles the cost of a switch.
Small Building
For a small building (typically with one or two floors and small
distances for cable runs) each wiring closet will have a stack of edge
switches and edge switches will also be used in the comms room to
provide the aggregation point for the servers and local network
access.
Mid-to-Large Building
For a building with multiple floors and long cable runs, each wiring
closet will have a stack of edge switches. There will be core switches
in the comms room and potentially at the bottom of each riser
depending on distances and capacity requirements.
To build the configuration, start at the edge of the network. For each
floor of each building, take the number of users and the type of
applications being used and select the edge switch (each
floor/building could need different types of switch) :
• Ethernet Routing Switch 2500
• Ethernet Routing Switch 4500
• Ethernet Routing Switch 5500 / 5600
• Ethernet Routing Switch 8300
If the number of switches is 8 or less and the users are all close
enough (for standard Ethernet over CAT5e the users should be
within 90 metres) to the wiring closets, then stackable switches
should be selected and located here, otherwise add additional stacks
and spread them around the floor (dependent on space and
accessibility).
If the LAN is used for data only traffic (ie. no voice), and there are
only one or two floors, only edge switches will be required and each
stack can be connected to eachother.
The following sections show the key LAN products and how to build
a complete solution.
The 2500 has stacking capability using the two Gigabit copper ports
at the rear which allows 8 switches per stack.
New sales of 2500 series switches have stacking enabled by default,
however note that earlier shipments of these switches required a
Stacking License Kit so upgrades may be required to enable this
feature. Each kit contains a License Certificate with a License
Authorization Code (LAC) and uses the same license file
management / generation process via the Avaya Licensing portal as
currently used for the ERS 5000 Advanced Routing License.

Deployment scenarios
The ERS 5600 is a flexible solution that can be deployed in a variety
of enterprise environments. These include:
High-density wiring closet
With its non-blocking design, high density GbE and integrated
10GbE ports, the ERS 5600 is perfectly suited as a wiring closet
solution for high-availability LAN edge user connectivity. Up to eight
ERS 5600 switches can be combined into a single stack with each
unit providing at least two 10GbE XFP ports for high-performance
uplinks to the core or aggregation layers in the network. ERS 5698
models further provide high-density economical GbE connectivity
with the added flexibility of up to 6 SFP ports per switch for gigabit or
100fx fibre connections. With the ability to support Power over
Ethernet across all its ports, the ERS 5600 is an economical and
flexible wiring closet/edge solution in support of desktop and
powered devices.
High-performance data center edge
The high-performance, low-latency and high-availability requirements
of the data center make the ERS 5600 a perfect solution for the data
center edge. By utilizing the ERS 5600’s innovative horizontal
stacking capability - a switch at the top of each server rack, stacked
horizontally - the ERS 5600 can support high-density server
connections. Up to 384 GbE ports and multiple 10GbE uplinks can
be deployed in this configuration Avaya’s Switch Cluster solution
(SMLT) can further enhance overall resiliency through addition of a
second horizontally- stacked “top of rack” switch. Connected servers
can then be “dual homed” to separate 5600 stacks, which in turn
appear as a single, logical switch to the network. This enables
active-active connections, load balancing and sub-second failover
across the stacks. These features make the 5600 a truly cost-
effective data center solution that combines always on resiliency with
full non-blocking capabilities.
Highly scalable small to medium core
The ERS 5600 can also serve as a high-performing, feature-rich core
solution. With its high-density 10GbE and SFP ports (up to 64
10GbE and 192 SFP ports per stack), the 5632FD is particularly
well-suited to core applications. Coupled with dynamic routing
protocol (RIP/OSPF) and VRRP support as well as in-unit redundant
power supplies, the ERS 5600 can provide a low-cost, resilient small
core solution. ERS 5600s can further act as a virtual switch cluster to
other ERS 2500, 4500 or even third party access switches using
Avaya’s switch clustering (SMLT) technology. ERS 5600s in this
configuration can provide up to 800 ports and over 2.3 Terabits of
performance — all while enabling full use of all switches and links
across the network.

Up to 3 Power Supplies
The 8300 complements the 8600 in the network core and offers a
reliable end-to-end modular switching solution for enterprises. The
8300 alternatively offers an edge chassis based solution with Power
over Ethernet support of up to 384 ports in a chassis. It is available in
a 6-slot and 10-slot chassis. Fully loaded, the 10-slot supports up to
3 power supply units and 2 switch fabrics. This leaves 8 free slots for
interface modules.
For network designs that require a third “Distribution” tier, the ERS
8300 is an ideal option. The switch provides:
• High-density 1G and 10G for both the core and access tier
connectivity requirements
• High performance and low latency to ensure optimized
application performance
• Switch Clustering to extend sub-second fail-over and full session
load-sharing across the network infrastructure — from User to
Application
The ERS 8300 incorporates Avaya’s advanced resilient technology
Split Multi-Link Trunking (SMLT) which provides complete protection
against any individual component, link or node failure. This solution
provides for sub-second recovery combined with user session-based
load-balancing — all leveraging standards-based link aggregation at
the network edge (user or server).
Deploying the ERS 8300 in the core is the ideal solution for
delivering highly available services. As a stand-alone device, ERS
8300 provides an extremely robust platform for resilient networking.
The system supports dual redundant switch fabric modules, N+1
power supplies and hot-swappable modules and fan trays.
Performance Architecture
At the heart of the ERS 8300 is a passive backplane design and a
distributed forwarding architecture that leverages the advantages of
dual N-1, active-active Switch Fabrics. The 720 Gbps Crossbar and
the 8394SF Switch Fabric module deliver up to 464Gbps of genuine
data throughput and 345Mpps of frame-forwarding performance per
switch. Putting these figures into a business context, an ERS 8300
Core Switch Cluster can transport more than 60,000 average-sized
office files per second, and still not be subject to contention.
Power over Ethernet options
The 8348TX-PWR module provides inline power to any IEEE 802.3af
compliant devices such as IP phones, wireless access points, net
cameras, security, lighting devices, and access control devices.
Standards-based equipment means that customers are not forced to
tie themselves to any one vendor, as the switch has the flexibility to
power multiple vendors’ 802.3af devices. It can supply power up to
15.4 watts per port, meeting 802.3af standards, sufficient to supply
any standards compliant attached devices.
The 8348GT modules compliment the 8348TX modules and provide
unpowered or 802.3af powered 10/100/1000 ports. They can supply

20 ports . If further power is required an RPSU15 unit can be added
to provide a full 15.4 Watts on all 48 ports.
4526GTX-PWR and 4524GT-PWR
The 4526GTX-PWR and 4524GT-PWR are 10/100/1000 switches
with 24 ports of Class 3 802.3af power. The 4526GTX-PWR
additionally features 10 gigabit uplink ports. An RPSU can be
optionally added to provide redundant power for these switches.
4548GT-PWR
The 4548GT-PWR provides a high density 10/100/1000 PoE
platform incorporating resilient stacking and built in SFP uplink ports.
It can provide up to 320 Watts of PoE power using the AC supply
only, this equates to 6.67Watts per port for 48 ports or a full 15.4
watts for the 20 ports . If further power is required an RPSU15 unit
can be added to provide a full 15.4 Watts on all 48 ports.
5520-24T/48T- PWR
The 5520 platform provides gigabit Ethernet connectivity and IP
routing, in a cost effective high density stackable platform. It can
provide 320Watts of PoE power per switch, or 6.5Watts per port on a
48 port switch or 13Watts per port for the 24 port switch. The
RPSU15 unit can be used to provide the full 15.4Watts per port on
either switch.
5698TFD-PWR
The 5698TFD-PWR is a class-leading high capacity switch with 96
ports capable of being powered to full 802.3af standard by adding
additional modular power supplies (no RPS required). Up to three
PSUs can be fitted in the switch to provide N+1 power redundancy.
Note that a special power cord needs to be ordered for these PSUs.
5650TD-PWR
The 5650TD-PWR is a stackable 48 port 10/100/1000 switch and
ships with a 600W power supply for PoE. Full 802.3af power can be
supplied to all 48 ports by adding an additional PSU. Redundant
power can also be achieved by adding a PSU. Note that a special
power cord needs to be ordered for these PSUs. The RPS is not
required for this switch.
8300
The 8300 Chassis solution can be optimised for edge switch
deployments and includes the option of powered interface cards; 48
port 10/100 and 10/100/1000 units are available. The maximum
power provided per card is configurable (between 50 and 800Watts),
with three 8301 power supplies up to 1600 Watts of PoE can be
provided resiliently in a single chassis.
