INTERVIEW
Shinybinary
I’m a 24 year old web designer from Oxford in the UK. I have no training
in art or design, having studied for a degree in physics. I got into
Photoshop during my time at uni accidentally and haven’t looked back
since! Nowadays I spend my day time writing web code and designing pages
and my evenings drawing random crap.

2. Who are some of your artistic influencer? What is it about their work
that inspires you?

I find it very hard to single out one person who influences me.
Basically there are hundreds of peoples work I see online and in
magazines now who inspire me to produce my own stuff. Anything new and
exciting that I haven’t seen before is bound to make me want to go off
and make something of my own.

ISSUE #01|01.2007

series of which ‘sick’ is the
second, but because of the

were split I can only release
Digital, random, eye candy. I produce pictures to this now. It wasn’t meant to be
a violent picture, more about
be visually impacting representation of pain, but
and nothing more, it’s all about the feeling it somewhere along the lines it
gives me when I look at it. slipped into gore :}

Focus had to be all on one side as well so
it could be used as the cover if necessary.
Not sure when the mags out, I really hope
one of the 101 ideas isn’t about not stealing
Firefox’s colour scheme...

INTERVIEW
DESIGNFLIP ISSUE #01|01.2007

I am releasing this updated version of

Athena to celebrate it being on the cover of
this month’s Digit magazine: [link] Basically
I just replaced a few details I was unhappy
with, tightened up the brushing, fiddled with
the lighting and colours and improved the
quality of some of the bits that had gone a
bit blurry at the back. I consider it a better
version anyway. Just been to Canada for
a bit and so not really active in making
new stuff but I have a bunch of ideas to
start working on and a few more magazine
thingies coming up.

4. Could you tell us about your creative process?

It varies a lot but so many of my pictures have just started by me

opening up and messing about in Photoshop until I see something I like.
Often a point will then come when I see an end picture I want to create,
and from there it’s just a case of finishing it off.

5. What is your favourites design tools?

Well I guess Photoshop is my favourite design tool by a factor of 10 or

so. I spend 90% of my time in it, only dipping into other programs when
I want a particular effect PS can’t manage. Without Photoshop I’d have
probably ended up working in a bank or something.

6. What accomplishments are you most proud of?

My website, it’s taken a lot of work and time and the amount of feedback
I get on it nowadays is very satisfying. It was also nice to be called
Computer Arts’ favourite Photoshop artist, that was cool. Oh and the
t-shirts I had done with the Imaginary Foundation, that has been a big
thing for me.

7. where’s your idea ussually come from?

I have no idea, outer space or something. They just pop into my head,
which is handy.

This is my rather loose interpretation of the story of Icarus.

It’s actually an older, ‘colour test’ version, made before the
final image which you can see on my site. I thought it would
be more interesting to put this version up rather than exactly
the same one that’s been on show elsewhere for a month
already. Thanks to =NullVoiD for letting me use an old
render of his in some of the details, very useful it was too :}

Great stock from =resurgere

Oh and it was my birthday yesterday, so this is my first

submission as a 24 year old :} I’m getting too old for this
game :{

8. What your favourites website?

I love visiting Deviantart for all the new talent, and Computerlove for
keeping an eye on the world of art and design. Of course Design diary is
great for that too ;)

9. Shinny Binnary for 5 Years Later?or some secrets project at 2007?

Shinybinary for ever! I have no plans for 5 months later let alone 5
years. I think 2007 will see my first work appearing in books, and if a
current project goes ok art galleries too... that will be pretty
exciting. Onwards and upwards I guess.
Often a point will then come when I see an end picture I want to create,
and from there it’s just a case of finishing it off.

After the rather muted tones of ‘never’ I felt like going a bit
overboard in the other direction and produce something re-
ally bright and cheerful. It’s the first time in a while that I’ve
produced something purely in Photoshop without some photo
or render as a starting point (a few of the extra details around
the edge were done in Illustrator though).

I also wanted to make something like this for DC’s Deluxe

packs as the whole feel of deluxe was colourful and vibrant in
my mind. It would have been a shame not to have at least one
eye candy piece there :}

Diskomfest, an event made by the Visual Communication Design(DKV) of Indonesian

Institute of Art Yogyakarta (ISI Yogyakarta) community -by inviting all institute or college of
DKV in Indonesia,- which is held once in every two years is already a number two. The first
Diskomfest was held on September 2004 by carrying a theme called “Study Hard Play Hard,”
while Diskomfest #2 which was held this year (2006) on 6-9 Desember at the Vredeburg For-
tress, Yogyakarta, carry the “Challenging Heroes” theme and having Graphic Design Exhibi-
tion, Advertising Seminar with Gandhi Suryoto (Creative Director Dentsu), Graphic Design
Creative Sharing with Godot Praesta (owner of www.godote.com) and Ade Herdian (www.
flashidinteractive.com), Motion Graphic and Animation Creative Sharing with Wahyu Aditya
(the Head Director of hellomotion), Comic Creative Sharing with Beng Rahardian(commicus)
and Asnar zacky, Award, Bazaar, and last but not least is Music, included in the agenda. The
Exhibition, which is the main agenda for this time Diskomfest is showing the student’s cam-
pus-assignment work, experimental artwork, teacher’s artwork, High School’s Award delega-
tion work, and other institute delegations artworks such as DKV UNS-Solo, Red Army Comic
Club of Malang State University (UM)-Malang, DKV Universitas Indonusa Esa Unggul (UIEU)-
Jakarta, Akademy Desain Visi Indonesia (ADVI)-Jogja. On the last day we present a live music
show -including major or indie band, DJ, and also sexy dancer- to be an instant reunion event
with those who have finished their study at DKV ISI Yogyakarta, and also to entertain delega-
tion who have come to Diskomfest, not forget to mention the delegation from DKV Universitas
Bina Nusantara (BINUS)-Jakarta, DKV UK PETRA-Surabaya, and DKV Padang University.

To begin from an after class chat, Diskomfest was created as an action of trying to
make a major agenda out of KMDGI (Kriyasana Mahasiswa Desain Grafis Indonesia) which
we feel too restrictive for our big imagination and creativities -beside that it cost too much
in order to able participate. Thus, we try to introduce the world of DKV as a whole, not only
the visual art, but we try to show the process behind that piece of artwork, until the live style
that is exist among our community in DKV ISI Yogyakarta. Doing this, we consider pupil as the
target who will absorb the potential of communication design world and feel the impact of the
existency of communication design world, thus will create a mutualism interaction between
pupil (including industri) dan the world itself, eliminating the negative oppinion that arose in
publik, saying that the work of communication design is not educative and often cross the
border of society custom, until the oppinion that says to design is an easy job thus make a
design is not being appropriately appreciated. Many other form of public misunderstanding
about the profession, and the knowledge, and the world itself, is not supposedly to happen
when there’s a media which able to give information and a container that acts as a catalyst
between the society and world of communication design-whether the work or the people. And
we are using Diskomfest as a benchmark to our power to measure anything we’ve learn and
get dan further more is to know self power-map, though it’s not completely work out, but Dis-
komfest surely is expected to be out stepping stone to a better way for our almamater, DKV
ISI Yogyakarta.

I am currently a student at Minneapolis College of Art and Design in
Minneapolis Minnesota, majoring in Graphic Design. My art inter-
est started out as traditional drawing, as I grew older I merged the
digital art medium along with my traditional skills. This had lead my
work to go into new directions. Since then I have been using photo-
shop on almost all my work. From adjusting levels on drawings, to
creating images from scrap, the possibilities are endless.

I have been using adobe photoshop for about 5 years now. It is all
about just finding a creative touch to ideas you are wanting to pro-
duce in the program.

ISSUE #01|01.2007
Digital Threads Duex
Was playing around with different themes and looks to create a futuristic
composure. This features some simple 3D foundations with line work, addi-
tional glows, and objects in Photoshop. Its tough to make your 2D additions
in a perspective match with your 3D backgrounds. Though you can re-
ally create some interesting visuals with mediums on different platforms.
There is also a few bits of typography and shape work involved as well.

DESIGNFLIP MAGAZINE
Brand New Day
Open Expression.
This image was created for the Oxygenetic Artgroup I’m apart of.
The theme for the art release was “freestyle”. One particular idea
I wanted to get across was the mixture of both traditional drawing
skills and digital manipulation. This then laid out the foundation
for an image that would portray a freestyle creation in the making.
The main background was created by scanning some dirty copy pa-
per and adjusting the levels to create a dotted grainy background.

ISSUE #01|01.2007
Once that was established, I then began to draw various objects using the pen
tool, and created different patterns to give the image a “print “ like feel.

Then a few custom ink brushes I created had allowed me to achieve a

splattered ink effect on all the illustrations. The main thing I took into
consideration here is to really watch how to use blending modes. Making
sure the right colors turn out in different modes can be tricky, so you have to
backtrack and make sure you get the right colors before you blend. After all
line work, color, and objects were in place, finally came the addition of the
spray paint thug stock image.

( Series 2 shirts)
Second in line for my poster production at George Smiths and Jason Kriegers
Naature Clothing. I wanted to find a way to mix all the shirts in together with the
various objects , custom illustrations, and texture effects that would definitely
catch attention. This randomized design really makes a regular idea interesting if
you can execute your placement right. This type of design is really nice for experi-
menting with new ideas.

Morning Map
Was experimenting with different shapes and object pat-
terns here While the objects were being produced, I want-
ed to show a map like effect with some contrasting color
masks. After it was all done, the document looked more
like a chaotic color test than anything. Various typogra-
phy and placement ideas were executed here as well , that
follow by a few foundational principles of graphic design.
This was also a print media test for some color work I was
straightening out .

This image was created for the Oxygenetic Artgroup I am apart of. This image was
a collaborative effort with my Friend Mike Harrison(http://www.destill.net/), who is
also apart of the group. The image was first send to me with most of the foundation
and objects already laid out. The background was a stock image and was heavily
edited to support Mikes additions of circles and foundational work. Many masks
and blending modes were used to show off the full array of colors blended into each
object and background. From there 2D linework and objects were added using the
pen tool once again. The style and form of these lines were made carefull to fit the
contour of the shapes they were surrounded by. These layers were placed along
with the masks to blend in with the rest of the image. The theme for the image was
freestyle, so I worked to create an interesting blend of shapes to give off an organic
and vivid feel.
