ABSTRACT: Evaluation of morphological and agricultural characteristics and their phenotypic

correlations in genotypes of a Pfaffia glomerata (Spreng.) Pedersen population. Pfaffia glomerata
(Spreng.) Pedersen, Amaranthaceae, occurs spontaneously in the Brazilian territory. Their roots have
been used as tonic, anti-tumoral, aphrodisiac and food supplement as well as other popular uses. The
species has been overcollected in the natural environment and the wild populations are endangered.
The cultivation can help to decrease the ecological pressure on the species. However, P. glomerata is
not a domesticated species, and it shows great phenotypic variability expressed in development
differences, resistance to insects and diseases, responses to soil fertility, productivity, and chemical
compounds. The aim of this work was to describe one cultivated population of P. glomerata based on
morphological and agricultural characteristics. Analysis of the correlations between the evaluated variables
can identify more promising plants for root production and other interesting agricultural features. The
following agricultural traits were analyzed for each plant: number of roots, average branch diameter,
plant height, root weight, aerial weight and harvest index. There was a large variation among plants
concerning these features. The mean, the standard deviation, the mean standard error, and the maximum
and minimum values for each analyzed characteristic were calculated and frequency histograms showing
important traits for a breeding program of this species were shown. The following correlation analysis
between interesting traits for a breeding program was also done: plant height x aerial weight; average
branch diameter x dry root weight; plant height x dry root weight; number of branches x number of
roots; number of branches x dry root weight; plant height x harvest index; aerial weight x harvest index
and number of branches x harvest index. We found significant (both positive and negative) correlations
of variable magnitudes between the analyzed features. These results can help to improve the breeding
efficiency in the selection of promising P. glomerata genotypes.
