DESCRIPTION
Ringer-Lactate infusion is a clear, colourless, sterile, non-pyrogenic solution for intravenous
administration, containing sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium lactate and calcium chloride
dehydrate.
PRESENTATION
500ml, 1000ml
COMPOSITION
The electrolyte composition of Ringer-Lactate solution for injection makes it isotonic with blood.
Ringer-Lactate solution for intravenous administration contains the following ions in mmol/L:
Na+ 131
K+ 5
Ca2+ 2
Lactate 29
Cl- 111
THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS/USES
It is used in the treatment of mild metabolic acidosis, and as a fluid and electrolyte replenisher in
cases of dehydration or shock due to diarrhea and vomiting, peritonitis and interstitial obstruction. It is
also used in the initial management of the injured or wounded. It can also be used in treatment after
serious burns and in cases of ketonuria. Ringer-Lactate infusion is also used as a conduit for
the delivery of drugs.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Ringer lactate infusion is contraindicated in severe metabolic acidosis or alkalosis. It should not be
given if the patient has congestive heart failure, ischaemic stroke, severe liver disease or anoxic states
which affect lactate metabolism. It should be used with caution in patients with gastric outlet
obstruction, and in oedematous patients with cardiac, renal or hepatic disorders.
SIDE-EFFECTS
As with any medicines, some side effects may occur. Some swelling of the hands, ankles and feet may
be experienced due to fluid retention in the body. In rare circumstances, this may also involve the
lungs, which may cause some breathing difficulty. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting,
headache, dizziness, drowsiness or confusion. Inflammation at the site of injection, or swelling og the
veins near the site of injection is also possible.
