Design Project 3

2008-07-29.1
SUBJECT: DESIGN PROJECT 3

SUBJECT CODE: DPRJ301

PURPOSE: The successful student will demonstrate work performance and communication
at a professional level in a project-based developmental assessment framework
based on his chosen field. [Detailed requirements will be made known in a
supplementary study guide for each specialisation area.]

PREREQUISITES: All required S3 subjects.

COMPLEMENTARY
SUBJECTS: All required S4 subjects.

DURATION: Maximum of one semester.

PRIOR SKILLS: The student is expected to have met the exit criteria for all the subjects listed
under prerequisites.

CONTACT TIME: This depends on the specialisation area and the nature of the project. The
student is advised to consult the supervisor to establish attendance and
communication requirements.

ASSESSMENT: The subject will be assessed on the basis of three skills:

1. Execution of a technical project (technical skills)
2. Written and graphic communication (project report)
3. Presentation or demonstration of the project by the student, where the
student interacts with the assessor(s) at the level expected of a
professional technician.

PASS REQUIREMENTS

The examiners will decide on a final result based on the following criteria:

FAIL: The examiners are able to state with reasons why the presentation, report
or the associated artifact or project falls irredeemably short of the
standard expected of a technician in the workplace.

PASS: The examiners are able to state with reasons why the presentation, report
and the associated artifact meet the standard expected of a technician in
this field.

PASS WITH DISTINCTION: The examiners are able to state with reasons why the presentation, report
or the associated artifact reflect some key aspect of the student's work
that distinguishes it from the norm.

1
CODING OF FINAL MARK

The final result can be signified by one of three marks:

45% does not meet requirements (fail)

65% meets requirements
75% meets requirements and earns distinction

If the assessment is carried out by means of rating systems and/or tests that deliver a structured final mark,
the interpretation of the marks will be as follows:

0% to 48% does not meet requirements (fail)

50% to 73% meets requirements
75% to 100% meets requirements and earns distinction

Use of rating systems and/or tests implies that the structure of such systems will be made known to the
student, in writing, at the outset of the course.

MODERATION

The assessment will be moderated according to DUT policy by an external moderator.
