A Sly Cat
When a cat is young, he catches many mice.
The mice are afraid of him then. But then he grows
old and cannot catch mice any more.
One day he decides to play a trick on the mice. He
lies on his back and does not move at all. A mouse
sees him and thinks he is dead. She runs to her friends
and says, 'The cat is dead! Let us dance and play!'
And all the mice begin to dance and play. They
are very happy. They dance round the cat, and the
cat does not move. Then one of the mice jumps on
the cat's head.
'Look at me! Come nearer, all of you! The bad cat
is dead! Let us dance on his head!'
But suddenly the cat jumps up and catches the silly
mouse. The other mice run away as quickly as they can.

Why the Crocodile Does Not Eat Hens

Do you know why crocodiles do not eat hens?
Let me tell you.
One day a hen comes to the river. She wants to
drink water there.
The crocodile sees her and comes up to her. He
is very hungry and wants to eat her up.
But she says, 'Don't eat me because you are my
brother.'
The crocodile lets her go: he cannot eat his sister!
The next day, when the hen comes to the river
again, the crocodile decides to eat her up.
But again the hen says that he is her brother.
And again the crocodile does not eat her.
28
Then he thinks: 'How can I be her brother? I live
in the water, and she doesn't.'
The crocodile decides to go to his friend, a lizard.
'Oh, my friend! A big hen comes to the river every
day and when I want to eat her, she says that I am
her brother. How can it be?'
'Oh, my silly friend!' the lizard answers. 'Don't
you know that the hen, the turtle, the lizard lay eggs
as crocodiles do, my dear? So we all are brothers
and sisters. Do you understand?'
'Oh, thank you very much,' says the crocodile.
Now you know why crocodiles never eat hens!

The Water was their best friend, and they often

'But I shall build a new big house,' the Sun said.
And the Sun built a very big house and then asked
the Water to come to him. The Water came with all

A Little Grey Bird

There lives a little grey bird in the forest. She is
not happy, because she is very small and is not beau-
tiful. And she can't sing.
One evening the little grey bird sits in a tree near
a blue lake. The moon comes out and its silver light
dances on the small blue waves.
The moonlight sings about how wonderful it is to
play with the waves. The little grey bird listens.
Every night the little bird flies back to the lake to
hear the songs of the moonlight.
After that she can sing those songs very well too.
At first her voice trembles. But then it grows stronger.
All the forest can hear it.
And you can hear her songs too, when the evenings
are warm and the moon is bright. It is the nightingale.

Cinderella
Cinderella is a beautiful young girl. She lives with
her father and her stepmother. She has two stepsisters.
The stepmother and her two daughters hate
Cinderella. They make her do all the housework.
One day the King invites the family to the Palace
Dance. The wicked mother and her daughters don't
want Cinderella to go there.
Poor Cinderella is very sad. She does the house-
work and cries.
Her fairy Godmother appears before her and wants
to help her.
Cinderella has no clothes to go to the Palace Dance.
The Godmother touches Cinderella with her magic
stick and Cinderella wears a beautiful white dress.
'Go, my dear, to the Ball but you must return
before midnight. After that time the magic will not
work,' says the Godmother.
Cinderella goes to the Ball in a grand coach with
six white horses
She dances with the Prince and forgets about the
fairy's warning.
The clock strikes 12 and it reminds her of the fairy's
warning. She runs out of the palace and drops one of
her slippers.
66
The Prince runs after Cinderella and picks up the
slipper. He wants to find Cinderella. His servant travels
throughout the kingdom. He tries to find the owner
of the slipper. Every girl tries the slipper on but it
does not fit anybody. It only fits Cinderella. The step-
mother and her daughters are surprised to see this.
The Prince marries Cinderella and takes her to
his palace. They live happily ever after.

Sindbad the Sailor

Sindbad is a young handsome boy. He lives in
the city of Baghdad. He is very poor. He always
thinks about his fortune.
He decides to travel. For some days everything is all
right but then a furious storm begins and breaks his ship.
But Sindbad finds a plank of wood floating nearby and at
last he reaches a wonderful island. Sindbad is very hun-
gry. He climbs up a palm-tree and sees an egg. The
egg is very big. This egg belongs to a bird called Roc.
'Oh, how to get this egg? I'm so hungry', 'thinks
Sindbad.
Suddenly a big bird of the East appears and catches
Sindbad. She carries him over a distance and then
let him go down.
Sindbad falls down into a big heap of precious stones.
'Oh, my God! Where am I?' shouts Sindbad.
A huge snake guards the stones. The snake wants
to eat Sindbad up but he is too clever for this snake.
He tricks the snake and fills his pockets with pre-
cious stones and runs away.
70
Luckily, a whale happens to pass by. Sindbad
jumps on his back. The whale carries him to Bagh-
dad.
Sindbad gives out all his precious stones to the poor.

An Old Tale
Once there lived a man who was very fond of gold.
He used to say, 'While I have my gold, I am the
happiest man in the world.' And so all his life he saved
money. Soon he had a lot of money. He was happy.
One day he was travelling in the desert of North
Africa. Suddenly he lost his way. He had no food or
water and was almost dying. He was so weak that he
could not walk, he could only crawl. The heat was
terrible. There were only stones and sand around.
Just then he saw a bag lying on the sand. He hoped
that he would find food and water in it. He crawled
up to the bag and opened it. The bag was full of
gold. At first he was glad to find gold in the bag
but then he thought:
74
'What is the use of gold to a hungry man in a desert?'
He left the bag on the hot sand, crying bitterly, 'I
am the most unhappy man in the world.'
Now you see that gold does not always make a
man happy.

The Rabbit's Bride

There lived a woman with her daughter in a
beautiful cabbage-garden.
77
Every day a rabbit came there and ate up all the
cabbages.
At last the woman said to her daughter, 'Go into the
garden, and drive out the rabbit.' 'Shoo! Shoo!' said the
girl. 'Don't eat up all our cabbages, little rabbit!'
'Sit on my tail and go with me to my rabbit-hutch,'
said the rabbit.
But the girl didn't agree.
Again, a second and a third time the rabbit came
back and asked the girl to sit on his tail and go with
him to his rabbit-hutch.
And then the girl agreed and the rabbit took her to
his hutch.
The rabbit asked the girl to be his bride and to
cook some bran and cabbage and went to invite the
wedding guests. Soon they were all collected: all the
hares came, and the crow, and the fox. But the girl
was sad, because she was so lonely.
Then she made a figure of straw, and dressed it
in her own clothes, and gave it a red mouth, and
set it to watch the kettle of bran, and then she went
home to her mother.
When the rabbit came back, he saw the straw fig-
ure. He hit it on the head, so that it fell down.
The rabbit thought that he had killed his bride,
and he went away and was sad.

Alice in Wonderland
Once Alice, a little girl, decided to go for a walk.
She went to the valley nearby and played there the whole
day. Soon she got tired and fell asleep under a tree.
But suddenly she saw a rabbit running. The rab-
bit had a big watch in his hand. Alice thought that
he was going to a party. He was smartly dressed.
Alice decided to follow him.
The rabbit reached a tree and entered a big hole
in it. Without any hesitation Alice followed him.
But she began falling down.
Suddenly she found herself in a beautiful garden. There
were a lot of flowers around. All flowers could speak.
'Did you see a rabbit running?' asked Alice.
'No, no!' answered the flowers.
Alice went ahead and met the March Hare and
the Mad Hatter. They invited her to have some tea.
Alice accepted the invitation because she was very
tired. They said they didn't see the rabbit either.
Alice went to look for the rabbit. At last she found
him near the house made of playing cards.
The rabbit entered into the house. Alice went in
also. She found strange people there. There was the
Queen of Hearts. The rabbit was also there. When
he saw Alice, he was frightened. The Queen was
angry to see Alice and asked her servants to arrest
the girl. At that very moment Alice awaked and found
herself sitting where she had been before she fell
asleep. She was happy that it had only been a dream.

Sacred Pythons
One day some people from a village in Africa
went hunting. When night came, they were far from
their homes.
'Let's find a good place to sleep,' said the chief.
They found a place with big trees round it. Then
they went to sleep. They slept soundly and didn't
hear anything.
But suddenly something fell down on the head of
a young hunter. He jumped up and began to cry. It
was a big python!
The hunters got up quickly and saw enemies round
them. They began to fight. Soon the enemies ran
away and that was the end of the fight.
'What made you jump up and cry?' asked the chief.
'It was a python,' said the young hunter. 'It fell
on my head, but didn't kill me.'
'From this day on never kill a python, hunters!'
said the chief.
Even today people in that village never kill py-
thons. The pythons are sacred animals in that vil-
lage. If you enter their houses, you will find py-
thons there. The pythons never harm anyone, they
don't even eat chickens.

The Cunning Cat

Once upon a time, there lived an old miller.
When he died, his sons divided his property among
themselves. Peter, the youngest brother, got a cat
as his share. He was sad about it.
The cat saw that Peter was sad and said, 'Don't worry!
Give me a pair of boots and see what I can do for you.'
Peter gave his boots to the cat and the cat went to
the forest to catch a rabbit there. After that the cat
went to the King and said:
92
'Your Majesty! My master the Duke has sent this
rabbit as a gift to you.'
The King was glad to hear it and asked the cat to
tell the name of his master.
'The Duke of Bexley!' answered the cat.
Next day Peter with his cat came to the river and
the cat asked his master to get into the river to swim
until he returns. Peter didn't know the cat's plan.
The cat went to the bridge and stood there. When the
King's carriage came to the bridge, the Cunning Cat
began to cry, 'Help! Help! My master has been robbed.
The robbers have taken away all his jewellry and clothes.'
The King recognized the cat and ordered to stop his
carriage. When the King saw the Duke in the river,
he ordered to bring royal dress for him. Peter got
beautiful clothes and looked like a duke in them.
The King found Peter rather handsome. He thought
Peter would be a suitable husband -for his daughter.
He asked Peter if he wanted to marry his daughter.
Peter agreed. Thanks to the Cunning Cat, Peter was
now a rich and noble man and husband of the Princess.

Henry's Bear
Once a boy called Henry found a little black bear in
the forest. The bear was very young and beautiful. The
boy took it home, and soon it became as tame as a dog.
Every day the boy went to school. Very often he
took the bear along with him.
At first, Henry's friends were afraid of his bear.
But then they became friends. The children brought
their dinner to school and gave the bear bread and
butter, milk and fruit. The bear was very happy.
96
One day the bear went back to the forest.
Many years passed. Great changes took place in
that school.
New boys and girls came to the school to study.
One very cold winter day the door of the school
suddenly opened, and a large black bear came in.
The pupils were greatly frightened. But the bear
did not harm anyone. He walked up to the fire and
sat down on the floor. He seemed to be very much at
home. He was happy to get into such a warm place.
After that, the bear found bread and fruit in the
bags of the children and began to eat.
Some time later five young men with guns came into
the school. They wanted to shoot the bear. Suddenly
one of them cried, 'Don't shoot! It's Henry's bear!'
They saw that the bear was the old friend of their
school days. So they let the bear go.

The Feast
Once a chief decided to give a feast for his peo-

pie. But he asked everybody to bring a bottle of palm
wine and pour it into a pot at the door of his house.
The day of the feast came. The people put on
their best clothes and walked to the chiefs house.
When they came there, they poured their bottles
into a very big pot at the door.
Ogalussa, a man from the village, wanted to go
to the feast, but he had no palm wine at home.
'Buy some wine,' said his wife.
'I don't want to buy wine for a feast that is free.'
He thought that many people would bring wine
and pour it into the pot and decided to bring a bot-
tle of water instead of wine.
'A bottle of water cannot be bad for so much
wine,' thought the man.
The man went to the feast with a bottle of water. He
poured his bottle into the pot as the other people did.
Then the chief said, 'Let's drink wine, dear guests!'
The guests took their glasses, but what they drank
was not palm wine. It was water! So Ogalussa was
not the only one who thought that a bottle of water
couldn't be bad for so much wine.

The Wolf and the Seven Little Kids

Once there lived a goat with her seven kids. She
was going to leave the house and said to her kids,
'Keep the door closed and don't let the wolf come in.'
Soon the wolf came to the house and knocked at
the door.
'Open the door, kids! I'm your mother.'
The kids didn't open the door because the wolfs
voice was different from that of their mother.
The wolf went to a farm and ate dozens of eggs to
soften his voice. When his voice became softer, he
returned to the goat's house.
But the kids saw the wolfs paw and said, 'You are
a wicked wolf. We shall not open the door.'
The wolf went to the mill and asked the miller to
103
put plenty of flour on his paws. With his paws white
like snow, the wolf came back to the goat's house.
'I'm your mother, dear kids. Open the door.'
'First show us your paws,' said the kids.
The wolf showed one of his white paws. The kids
believed that it was their mother and opened the
door, without any suspicion.
The wolf came in. The poor little kids were help-
less. The wolf caught the kids and ate them up.
When the goat returned, she found no kids in the
house. She searched for them but in vain. Only one
kid was saved because he hid under the basket. She
knew that the wolf had eaten her kids because she
saw prints of the wolf's paws.
The goat went into the forest and found the wicked
wolf sleeping.
She cut the wolf's stomach with a pair of scissors
and the six kids came out alive. Then she filled the
wolf's stomach up with stones.
When the wolf woke up he went to the river to
drink water. Because of the weight of the stones, he
fell into the river and was drowned.
The kids came back home with their mother.

The Boy and His Donkey

Once there lived a boy who had a donkey. His
donkey was very faithful. Though the donkey did all
the work he was asked to do, the boy was not pleased
with him. He thought that his donkey was very lazy.
The boy decided to get rid of his donkey.
One day an idea struck him. He decided to ex-
change his donkey for a motor car.
'A car is really useful and faster than this slow donkey.'
The donkey understood that the boy wanted to get
rid of him. He was very sad and heart-broken. But
the poor creature was helpless.
Next day the boy changed his donkey for a car
and was happy. He could go anywhere. He left the
town in the car with his two friends. His friends
asked him to drive faster and faster. He did it.
The donkey was sad to be left. He could not stop
his tears. He thought the boy was heartless.
The boy was driving the car with great enthusi-
asm. Suddenly the car jumped and stopped, mak-
ing strange noise. Something was wrong with it. The
boy got under the car to repair it. But he knew
nothing about cars.
108
The boy went back to his faithful donkey and said,
'Dear friend, I am sorry I forgot you. I wish I
had not changed you for the car.'
The boy learnt a good lesson that all that is new is
not always better than all that is old.

The Two Travellers

The two travellers, who were good friends, came
to a village in the evening and wanted to stay there
for the night. There was a house for travellers in
the village. But there was an old custom: travellers
may sleep in that house but they must not snore.
'We'll kill the man who snores,' said the chief of
the village.
The travellers agreed. They had a good supper
there, and then went to sleep. Suddenly one of the
in
travellers began to snore. The other traveller wanted
to save him and began to sing. He sang very well.
Nobody heard the snoring, they listened to the song.
All that night one traveller snored, the other sang.
In the morning the chief gave them a small bag of
money for good singing. The travellers left the vil-
lage but on the road they began to quarrel.
'Let's divide the money,' said the first traveller. 'I
think I should have the bigger part. You sang all the
night because I snored.'
'But the chief would have killed you, because you
snored. I saved you. I must have the bigger part.'
They quarrelled and quarrelled and could not de-
cide anything.

The Kind Woodpecker

The woodpecker is a big bird with a beautiful
coat — black, white and red. It is a clever bird. If
it can't get at an insect with his beak, it finds a
small stick and gets at insects with it.
The woodpecker is a tree doctor. It is a kind
bird, too. Do you know why?
Once upon a time it was very quiet in the forest
because birds did not know how to sing. Then some-
one came to the forest and began to give out songs
among the birds. Every bird wanted to get the most
beautiful song.
118
Only the grey nightingale sat quietly in the tree.
He did not ask for a song. The woodpecker also
asked for a song. And he got it. It was the longest
and the most beautiful song.
Then he saw the nightingale and asked:
'What song did you get? Sing it for me!'
'There is no song left for me,' said the bird.
The woodpecker gave his song to the nightingale
because she was not happy.
So the kind woodpecker does not sing, he has no
song.
All the birds in the forest like him just the same.

The Red Feather

There lived an old man with his wife. They were
very poor and had no food. The man was a bad
hunter and never brought anything from the forest.
One day he went to the forest again but didn't find
even a small bird for dinner. Suddenly he heard a
sweet song of a bird. He looked up and saw a small
bird with red feathers.
'Don't kill me. I'll help you. Take one of my feathers
and cook it. You'll have a good dinner then. Come to
me every day for another feather,' said the bird.
The man thanked the bird and went home. He
put the feather into the pot and began to cook it.
'You, silly! How can the feather be our food? Go
to the forest and catch the bird. Then we can cook
it,' said his wife.
The man didn't answer but looked into the pot
and saw there a good dinner.
Every day he went to the forest and the bird gave
him a feather. Every day they had a good dinner.
But his wife was very greedy. She wanted to have
the bird at home. She went to the forest alone, heard
the sweet song of the red bird and killed it with a
stone. Then she took it home, pulled one red feather
off the bird and began to cook it. But the feather was
just a feather.
From that day they were hungry again.
