WORKSHOP SAFETY

INTRODUCTION TO WORKSHOP:
Workshop is the place where we can make , deform and polish many kind of parts (in
case of mechanical) of machinery and other equipments that are needed. The basic
necessity of workshop in the Engineer’s life is that , he must know how different parts are
going to be manufactured.

There are many safety precautions which must be followed during working in workshop
other wise one should face many problems.

What basically the safety is? the safety is the judgement of the hazards ( which produces
injuries) and risk ( there are chances that injury can occur). More than 85% of the injuries
and accidents occurs due to the negligence of the Human ,so it is important to know about
the hazards and to work safely.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:
 We must wear proper Workshop apparel, i-e workshop jacket and proper shoes.
 We must avoid to wear loose cloths , rings on the fingers and other stuff like this ,
because this will may become the source if a huge accident in the workshop.
 A person must be attentive while working in a workshop , lazy or non serious
behaviour may leads to a severe accident.
 A person must pay attention to the instructor that what he is saying about the
working of machine, and always keep all the instruction in the mind while working
on a machine.
 A person firstly must know all the information about the machine on which he is
going to start working, and then he starts the work.
 Report any damage to machines/equipment as this could cause an accident.
 Use hand tools carefully, keeping both hands behind the cutting edge.
 Always be patient, never rush in the workshop.
 When attempting practical work all stools should be put away.
 Smoking, eating and drinking in workshop areas is strictly prohibited.
 Leads and their plugs are a source of many electrical accidents. The problems usually
arise from damage to the insulation on the lead or strain on the connection into the
plug.
 If personnel in the workshop have long hair there is a danger of this being entangled
on rotating machinery and the person drawn in. The hair should be tied close to the
head using a hairnet to ensure no stray strands of hair can fall free.
 All personnel working in the workshop and visitors should wear protective safety
glasses whilst in the workshop for the purpose of eye protection.
 If there is any risk of tools or materials being dropped from above, or if personnel
have to move around under structures and machinery or the overhangs of these,
then hard hats should be considered.

 Hands and lower arms are the most vulnerable parts of the body as they frequently
come in contact with machinery and work pieces.

  Electricity is used extensively in all workshops often at a higher voltage, than

domestic supplies. This section will concentrate on some hazards to be found in the
workshop.

 A first aid kit shall be readily accessible to all workshop users at all times of workshop
occupancy.
