Speaking & Comprehension Skills and Writing:


Students work on four components (Speaking, Listening, Reading, & Writing) of English
language with two teachers dividing the module into two major core wings: Speaking &
Comprehension Skills and Writing Skills. The whole module is spread over 13 weeks.

General Objectives
This course aims
 to expose students to new ideas, creative thinking and writing
 to teach students how to read academic prose in their respective disciplines and to give
students practice with these critical reading skills throughout the semester
 to interpret hidden meaning of advertisement from magazines and newspapers, to
differentiate, to define, to summarize, to integrate, to explain a text, to learn how to use social
expressions
 to introduce phonetic symbols and practice pronunciation
 to introduce new vocabulary
 to enhance grammatical knowledge
 to encourage students to give opinions through free session
 to foster collaborative student learning through individual/group presentations and
written assignments
 to introduce argumentative presentation
 to make students respond to interesting articles
Specific Objectives
At the end of the course students will be able to
 grasp information and organize ideas in the form of summaries, imaginative story
telling, interpreting advertisements, describing pictures, making drafts, citing references etc.
 interpret facts, compare and contrast, predict consequences, construct sentences with
correct verb patterns
 learn how to raise their own voice and ask questions
 prepare drafts before producing their final works
 identify common mistakes through peer evaluation and edit using correction symbols
 produce blurbs
 apply logical reasoning

Marks Distribution, Grading, Assessment, Attendance


• Students will be assessed by assignments, quizzes, midterm and final exams.
• The dates for quizzes and assignments would be announced in the class.
• Marks will be deducted for late submission of all given assignments.
• And the quizzes cannot be missed without a valid reason.
• In terms of assignment students must avoid PLAGIARISM, copying any kind of
written or oral words and ideas of others without proper acknowledgement. Students found
guilty of plagiarism would face serious consequences.
• Students who are requested to attend tutorial classes have to maintain 70% attendance
in the tutorial classes.
• All students have to maintain 70% attendance in each and every component of the
course i.e. writing and speaking & comprehension skills including tutorials when a student is
assigned with.

* IF ANY STUDENT FAILS TO SIT FOR THE FINAL WRITING EXAM OR FINAL
PRESENTATION, THAT STUDENT WILL FAIL TO MEET THE CRITERIA AND
END UP GETTING AN F

Policies and Obligations:


• Attendance and participation are mandatory
• Students must submit their assignments, home works etc. and attend all quiz and
class tests
Accepted format of Writing Assignments: double spaced, 12 font, Times New Roman
• Students will be asked to create a portfolio in their writing classes where they will
preserve their class work and homework for the whole semester. Teacher will collect the
portfolio before the midterm and at the end of the semester. Students will hand in the portfolio
with an introduction reflecting on their progress.
Distribution of Marks Grading
Class Tests – 10% 90 – 100 = A (4.0) Excellent
Assignments – 10% 85 - < 90 = A- (3.7)
Mid Term Exam – 20% 80 - < 85 = B+ (3.3)
Final Exam – 30% 75 - < 80 = B (3.0) Good
Speaking – 25% 70 - < 75 = B- (2.7)
Conversation Test - 6 marks 65 - < 70 = C+ (2.3)
Participation/HW - 6 marks 60 - < 65 = C (2.0) Fair
Impromptu Pres - 5 marks 57 - < 60 = C- (1.7)
Final Presentation - 8 marks 55 - < 57 = D+ (1.3)
Attendance – 5% 52 - < 55 = D (1.0) Poor
50 - < 52 = D- (0.7)
Total – 100% < 50 =F (0.0) Fail
Attendance Marks
90% and above 5
85% to less than 90% 4
80% to less than 85% 3
75% to less than 80% 2
70% to less than 75% 1
Less than 70% 0
Points to remember for both Speaking and Writing

• 70% attendance is a MUST, if any one fails to do so, she/he will be BARRED
• If anyone falls sick, she/he has to convince the teacher with adequate evidence,
proof and explanation.

• You are not allowed to enter the class after 10 minutes late.

• There will be no Make up for Quiz. The mark for the Quiz will be an Average of
3 Quizzes.

• Marks will be deducted for not submitting the written Home Work.

• For the late submission of Response Paper 1 mark will deducted for each day.

• The Final draft of Response Paper will not be accepted if a student fails to submit
the First Draft.

• In the case of group and pair work, the entire group or the pair will lose marks
for the irresponsibility of any particular member.

• No change will be permitted in the Final Presentation Schedule.

• Active participation in the class is required.

BONUS marks will be given for the gradual and steady improvement throughout the
semester. Logical thoughts and Classroom Etiquettes will be assessed while giving the
BONUS marks
Course Delivery Plan:
In each week, there will be two classes on writing and two classes on speaking & listening

* Students will be working on tenses, subject-verb agreement, prepositions and fragment in the
last 5-10 minutes of each writing class.
