Introduction to The HoloDesk TM
Thank you for your expression of interest in The HoloDeskTM.
HoloDeskTM is a New Zealand designed product for the DJ market

providing a new user interactive experience using a virtual display
desk. The technology used in the desk is used by ICE AV
Technology in our other vertical markets and is now packaged into a unique setup aimed at
the entertainment industry. The technology itself is well proven, robust and used in other
market sectors worldwide.
The HoloDeskTM is suited for a variety of sectors within the DJ sector including the dance part
scene, high-end nite clubs, concerts, mobile DJs, event music parties and the like. The
HoloDeskTM opens up new performance styles and techniques for performers in addition to
integrating with additional technologies.
Why touch interactive?
The interactive market has been steadily growing over the years and has been primarily related to
the touch kiosk and small factor screen market. In the early 2000’s new research started to emerge
from labs into the public consciousness. A few global companies jumped on board early, however a
whole sub culture industry developed world wide, even before the few global companies got it and
from this era iQRiteTM (ICE AV’s brand) was born and the HoloDeskTM is a result of this.
Does this spell the end of spinning vinyl or other slider and knob based DJ products in the market?
Absolutely not. We know many are excited about the concept that The HoloDeskTM delivers on,
and one just needs to see the online comments to gain an understanding of the enthusiasm. Others
see it as a fraud to the real DJ experience; others are waiting for the price to drop, however what
ever the position, touch is going to become one of the most persuasive technologies and one just
needs to see the phenomenon caused by the iPhone and iPad to get a sense of the importance of
touch.

in Q2 2011.

Introduction Background
HoloDesk(TM) DJ Mixer is the new interactive music mixing experience by using gesture
touch on interactive glass and holographic imaging from ICE AV.
ICE AV Technology an international interactive and digital display innovation manufacturer introduces
the HoloDesk(TM), the ultimate virtual DJ mixer for VJ and DJ artists. The technology behind the system
draws on ICE AV's expertise in the latest developments in interactive and digital display technology
from our significant catalog of leading edge technology.
The HoloDeskTM screen features an identical dual image on rear and front sides of the screen creating
a stunning transparent view for the audience as they can now clearly see the creative manipulations of
the DJ virtual controls. The HoloDeskTM now allows the DJ to be a central visual performance feature.
The HoloDeskTM from ICE AV can be used with any mixing music software, VJ Video mixing software,
DJ mixer software such as Traktor Pro and Emulator, virtual DJ mixer or other creative software
applications. It is designed for live stage performances, audio mixing, beat grid, dub step requirements.
Currently the HoloDeskTM is designed for operation with any Windows OS PC computer and Apple OS
solutions will be launched later. Of the above Emulator is one of the first to be designed as an interface
for finger touch, whereas the others have been designed for a mouse click. Even-so the finger touch
technology simply emulates a mouse action.
ICE AV is offering the HoloDesk(TM) Virtual DJ Mixer in four screen surface display formats and two
interactive technologies delivering total flexibility for customer preferences. A 3rd interactive technology
will be introduced in Q2 offering Windows OS / Apple Dual Touch for 32” and 42” in a new design
development based on SAW technology.
Until now, DJ artists relied on physical mixing desks to create their music, but now the concept of a 2D
transparent dual imaging virtual holographic DJ Mixing Desk is taking the internet by storm and causing
an international buzz within the DJ community. Within three weeks of a casual demo video being
uploaded to YouTube over 250,000 viewers created a buzz around the globe as the concept of a virtual
transparent mixing desk caught their imagination. Many web sites, blogs and news sites are already
hailing the concept as the "future of DJing".
The HoloDeskTM ships in both DIY format and as a complete system for those wanting a more "ready to
go plug-n-play experience" as a complete virtual holographic virtual DJ Audio and Video Mixer.
ICE AV is shipping the DIY version immediately for paid orders and is shipping the pre-built
HoloDeskTM DJ Mixing console against firm orders. ICE AV is offering a laminating service for those
purchasing the DIY version.
Now you might be asking can, The HoloDeskTM be used in other commercial applications? Most
certainly. There is no limit to how you might use The HoloDeskTM from expos, large format kiosk,
information screen. The brand name, The HoloDesk,TM in this form factor is being primarily aimed at
the DJ and entertainment industry.

The HoloDeskTM ships in both a complete system for those wanting a more "ready to go plug-n-play
experience" as a complete virtual holographic virtual DJ Audio and Video Mixer and in DIY format for those
wanting to save costs and requiring the key components to construct their own. We will work with you in both
situations to assist you to create the amazing HoloDeskTM.
In the DIY format customers have the choice of the four ICE Digital DaytimeTM laminate projection polymer
films and either of the iQRiteTM interactive frames or the I.C.E - Interactive Capacitance Emulator polymer
laminate film. For the HoloDeskTM we describe this throughout as the Edgeless version of the Holodesk.
These will be shipped ready for assembly by the customer and building a HoloDeskTM Mixing console.
Customers will source their own desk substrate and support frame.

DESCRIPTION
HoloDeskTM Screen Options
ICE AV is offering the screen in three display formats and two interactive technologies for the HoloDeskTM
Virtual DJ Mixer.
ICE AV is shipping the DIY version immediately and expects to begin shipping the pre-built HoloDeskTM DJ
Mixing console against firms order. ICE AV is offering a laminating service for those purchasing the DIY
version.
In the pre-built version of the HoloDeskTM, customers will only need to assemble the complete system that will
include the interactive projection HoloDeskTM screen, floor stand and projector mount (projector can be
supplied if required).
Touch Solutions
I.C.E - Interactive Capacitance Emulation
Is a transparent interactive touch plastic foil that is perfect as a surface touch technology. This allows an
edgeless design in the table surface as seen in the video.
The second is the iQRiteTM Interactive Slim Profile kitset frames that are available in Single Touch, Dual
Touch and Multi Touch (pending) formats. The frames have recently begun to ship in response to a growing
international market for interactive surface technology.
When you purchase the Complete Plug n Play system these technologies are all installed on the surface.
Four projection laminates are available depending on the buyer preference.
The films from ICE AV are renown for their quality in the interactive and multi-touch industry and currently
being offered are:
1 - HoloLite90TM is a 90% transparent projection film that creates a Minority Screen experience with imaging
on both sides of the screen.
2 - HoloContraMTM is a dark grey projection screen that creates an impressive bright high contrast image.
The Audience view is slightly less bright than the very bright DJ viewed side. Ideal for higher lit environments
3 - HoloContraBrTM is a lighter grey projection screen that creates an impressive bright image. Image slightly
brighter than HoloContraM and slightly more neutral colourisation.
4 - HoloDupixTM is a 360 degree imaging screen that delivers identical perfect images on both sides of the
screen. Perfect for allowing the audience to view the same image.
Paid sample packs are available for all the above projection polymers.
Software
The HoloDeskTM from ICE AV can be used with any mixing music software, VJ Video mixing software, DJ
mixer software, virtual DJ mixer or other creative software applications or any Windows OS software. It is
designed for live stage performances, audio mixing, beat grid, dub step requirements. Currently the
HoloDeskTM is designed for operation with any Windows OS PC computer. Software such as Traktor Pro and
Emulator are available through your normal retail or online source. Please note that our technology as used
in the HoloDeskTM allows you to interact with any computer software by finger touch, the software developers
may have designed their buttons and layout to be more suited for a mouse click.
The Software drivers for the HoloDeskTM Interactive Solutions are supplied online with each system.

Stage Performance Stand

We have designed and manufacture a rugged floor stand for the HoloDeskTM that is easy to assemble and
ships in kitset form.
Shipping Road case

A Plug n Play HoloDeskTM ships in a well constructed 12mm ply foam lined and inserts for shipping the entire
system. The shipping crate is designed for reuse. The Shipping case will enable the HoloDeskTM to be
shipped complete, keeping everything protected and safe for your next performance.
We will also be offering a full professional Road Flight Case that is typical of what is used in the music,
staging industry that you will be familiar with. Development of this is in progress.
Assembled System
ICE AV will be offering complete ready to assemble and perform HoloDeckTM Mixers. Currently we are
offering DIY packages and a labour service for clients wishing us to laminate and mount both touch solutions
and Projection laminates.
Warranty
The HoloDeskTM has an international warranty. Please refer to our Warranty Statement.

What software can I run on the The HoloDesk ™?

If the software runs on a Windows OS PC you can use it with a The HoloDesk ™ to do what ever you want.
The display / interactive hardware is independent of the functionality of the software. So if you can converge,
manipulate on the desktop of your monitor with a mouse and custom setting then the HoloDesk will display
this and allow you to interact accordingly.
Can I use a Mac computer to run the The HoloDesk™?

Yes you can use a Mac OS only with the Single Touch edgeless interactive laminate. However you must
clearly stipulate this with your order, otherwise we will ship the Windows OS version. The connector will be a
D9 RS232. The iQRite Interactive Touch Frame is only a Windows OS system. The suitability with the Mac
OS is a changing situation so please check in for the latest.
We will be introducing a third model of the HoloDesk that is both Mac OS and Win 7 and operates in Dual
Touch. Currently the physical design is in progress.
How does the HoloDesk connect to the computer?

Touch Frame – via USB
Interactive Laminate – via USB or R232 D9 connector. If you do not specify then we ship the USB option.
How much space does a The HoloDesk ™ require?

This is determined by the projector focal length, screen width and height of the stand. There is a slight
variance based on the size of the display. The maximum overall dimensions of a 74? dia screen would be in
the region of 1880mm W x 650mmD x 1700mmH On the 42 inch system the dimensions are 1210mmW x
600mmD x 1400mmH. This includes the projection space required. Some indivdual customisation, angle of
the screen etc would effect dimensions.
Where is the projector located?

The projector is placed beneath The HoloDesk ™ surface and is an integral part of the floor stand structure.
Some people know a data projector as a beamer, or LCD projector or DLP projector. These can connect to
any computer, dvd player, VHS video player etc.
Does The HoloDesk ™ come with a floor stand?

In the Plug-n-Play version it will be supplied with a pre-configured floor stand and the all important floor stand.
In the DIY version we do not supply a stand and you need to specify the floor stand which we provide in a DIY
format.
Does the floor stand collapse?

Yes the floor stand is design to ship and store flat. We realise that ease of transportation is an important issue
for DJs. It takes a few moments to bolt together.
How sensitive is The HoloDesk ™ to price increases?

World demand for materials and components in the electronic industry is at all time high and the problem is
increasing. Shortages, production lead times, component delays all impact on The HoloDesk ™. By Q2 2011
the price of the HoloDesk substrate will increase by 30%. The cost of materials will affect the HoloDesk. Glass
and Steel pricings are increasing worldwide and we are unable to avoid these. Worldwide there is a shortage
of steel which will affect many items you are already buying as the price of steel is undergoing global price
increases. Our pricing will change from time to time to reflect this. Conversely as we are able to reduce costs
we will pass these on as well.
Is The HoloDesk ™ mass manufactured?

The manufacturing of a The HoloDesk ™ is a labour intensive process. Each order is manufactured against
firm paid up orders only. Some components are manufactured in bulk.
Can I get a discount if I am a famous DJ living the high life with fans bowing at my feet?
We are always interested in partnering with strategic partners and ambassadors. Request our HoloDesk ™

Is the technology well proven?

The technology we use in the The HoloDesk ™ is well tested, patented and used in other industries
worldwide. ICE AV use these technologies in other divisions of the company with clients world wide.
Does the The HoloDesk ™ wearout?

The actual touch surface can not wear out with normal touch action. Systems we currently supply use
unbreakable polycarbonate or tempered glass. Both surfaces of the HoloDesk have additional protective
laminates. As the The HoloDesk ™ is powered by a projector this will wear out over time?
Is plexi glass a suitable substrate?

Yes you could use plexi glass. though we can also use polycarbonate as it is far easy to work with and almost
impossible to crack and has incredible strength. Acrylic can be easier to crack, not easy to drill. Acrylic is
harder than polycarbonate though that is not to say it is easy to scratch polycarbonate with normal use. We
are looking at adding a bonded safety film to the polycarbonate touch side as an option if customers have a
concern. You could add this at any time. For the Edgeless Systems we use 6mm tempered glass as the base
of the manufacturing process, For the Frame system we can use glass and polycarbonate.
What is the projector lamp life?

The WXGA version we will supply, has a manufacturer’s stated lamp life of up to 4000 / 5,000 hours in
economy mode depending on which model projector. As The HoloDesk ™ is an optical display system normal
care and maintenance should be exercised. The projector requires standard maintenance actions and subject
to projector manufacturer warranties.
Does the touch technology wear out?

No it can not physically wear out and is actually never touched when using The HoloDesk ™. We offer a
replacement top surface membrane that ensures the substrate proper is never permanently marked.
What is the difference in the two interactive touch solutions?

They are both two very different technologies. The I.C.E Capacitance Laminate is a revolutionary product that
is transparent and has no visible edge or frame. When laminated to glass or (even) timber it enables touch
interaction through the mounting substance, making it the perfect solution for a Minority Report type
interactive surface. We think of it as smart touch intelligent transparent plastic.
For the DIY community some skill and care is required to laminate the I.C.E Capacitance Laminate to the
substrate. We are offering this with a permanent adhesive as standard. If you require it as a removable
adhesive laminate please ensure this is clearly stated. Typically you would not require the remoavble
adhesive.
The iQRite Interactive Touch Frame is a sophisticated IR frame that incorporates the latest technologies and
is available in Single, Dual, and Multi Touch. It represents the very latest in IR touch developments. It is very
straightforward for the DIY community to mount to your own substrate by simply connecting the four sides and

What is Multi Touch?

Multi Touch is the next evolution in computer interaction that uses multiple and simultaneously user touch
points. There is a core industry group world-wide not in the public eye that is active building software,
hardware and services for this next generation user experience. Installations are now starting to appear
world-wide. A few large corporates are a part of this industry, however it is being driven by a passionate group
of developers, programmers and supported by a select few hardware manufacturers such as iQRite ™. We
always think of Multi touch as being 3 or more simultaneous touch actions and more commonly 10 to 32.

according to the touch technology used.
What is Dual Touch?
This term is a generic term referring to two touch points. The Apple iPhone has helped the public to
understand this new gesture experience.
What is Limited Dual Touch?

Limited Dual Touch is a two finger interaction experience on the display surface. It is a phrase we use
specifically with the Edgeless Interactive Transparent Touch laminate. Typically it has such functions as rotate,
zoom and stretch. A fixed Dual Touch requires one touch
to remain in place while a second touch performs the zoom and rotate / pinch motion. We are currently beta
testing the edgeless transparent touch plastic for two independent touch points.
What is True 2 Touch Touch?

This is the touch interaction we give to the Dual Touch edgeless transparent touch plastic for two independent
touch points.We are currently beta testing the edgeless transparent touch plastic for two independent touch
points. We will offer this solution once Alpha testing is completed and manufacturing commences.
What is Single Touch?

It is the most common and prevalent interactive screen touch experience and is used extensively in many
industries. The most common application is in kiosks, machinery control panels and remote controls for
example. Single Touch as it applies to the AV industry, normally assumes a digital graphical display being
created either from a projector or flat panel display.
Do you have technical specifications of the principal hardware components?

Yes, we are able to supply full data specs of all components.
What display resolution does The HoloDesk ™ support?

This is determined by the computer graphics card and projector. We recommend and can supply a projector
that has a native resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels but can support up to 1600 x 1200 pixels and 1080P.
Why do you offer two different projectors?

We have two options according to screen size. The have similar performance specs, however the optics are
suited for the different size categories.
32?, 42?, 50? 1280 x 800 native, 3000/5000 lamp hours, 3000:1 contrast, 2500ANSI, XGA / HDMI connector
inputs, 3D Ready, 28dBA Operation (Low Mode)

Can the HoloDesk ™ run for long periods of time without problems?
The projector can run for extended periods of time. Time has no bearing at all on the actual touch screen itself.
Is it only viewable in the dark or can it be seen in daylight?

The screen can be used in daylight, though the best effect is in a environment where the lighting is controlled.
In an indoor environment, club or dance venue there will not be issues. If you have concerns please let us
know more details of the environment. There are optional enhancements if you require bright displays. The
dual side image view of the The HoloDesk ™ is best seen and more easily achieved in a lower brightness
environment.
How is the image created on The HoloDesk ™?

The HoloDesk ™ image is created by rear projection using a high resolution projector. Please note you need
to specifically order the projector and iss not supplied unless expressely orderd.
To get things clear for me, what do you mean by projector?

The projector creates the image on the Holodesk that the DJ interacts with. In Europe it is described as a
Beamer.
Can I output the computer output to a large stage backdrop screen on a second projector or the ICE
Flexible LED Curtain screen?
If you wished to have a view of the desk displayed that was say 3m wide that was like a digital stage back
drop;
Then two considerations and options are needed.
The graphics card needs to be either of these
1- dual head graphics card,
2 – Matrix Dual Head,
3 – external 1:2 VGA Splitter….
one of the outputs feeds the projector creating the interactive image for the DJ and the other goes to either:
1 – another projector projecting on to the wall.
2 – display on one of our LED Flexible Curtain screens.
Or it you wanted to display the HoloDesk on a large projection screen somewhere else in the venue, then you
could take an output signal from the HoloDesk projector and connect this to a projector.
Can you help me configure The HoloDesk ™ to run the Traktor Pro and Emulator or any other
software for that matter?
Please refer to the licensor of the software. They are qualified to assist you if you have legitament copies of
their software.
We are suppliers of the touch and visual display hardware and this has no bearing on how you set up your
software application settings for your music.
How do I calibrate The HoloDesk ™?

The HoloDesk ™ requires calibration each time you move the projector relative to the screen position. If you
are using your The HoloDesk ™ at various venues you will need to set it up each time. Once you have done
this a few times it will be a pretty straightforward process. When you recieve your system there will be
instructions on how you should calibrate.
What does the calibration process do?

This aligns the visual points with the actual touch points.
Why do you offer four screen polymers.

As a specialist in screen solutions we have the luxury of being able to draw on a full catalog of screen
polymers. Today buyer demands choice, so we are responding to this.
What is the difference in the four screen choices?

1 – HoloLite90™ is a 90% transparent projection film that creates a Minority Screen experience with imaging
on both sides of the screen. This screen polymer works best when the environment is no more than 200 lux to
achieve dual imaging on both sides of the screen. Here are two videos that will help you understand this

2 – HoloContraM™ is a dark grey projection screen that creates an impressive bright high contrast image for
the DJ. Can be used in a higher lit environments. Slightly brighter image on the DJ side of the surface.
3 – ICE Dupix™ is a 360 degree imaging screen that delivers identical perfect images on both sides of the
screen. Perfect for allowing the audience to view the same image. Milky white appearance. If used in the
same nite club environment as the HoloContraM then the audience side would be brighter.
4 – ICE HoloContraBr™ is a 360 degree imaging screen that delivers identical images on both sides of the
screen. It is a light Grey in colour and allows more light to transmit through. Similar to HoloContraM which
slightly reduced contrast but brighter.
Do you recommend a particular screen from the options?

Only in special applications would you use the HoloLite90 when you need a screen that is truely transparent.
If you want the brightest audience side then choose ICE Dupix.
If you want the highest contrast and brightest image for the DJ then choose HoloContraM.
If you want good brightness with higher contrast than Dupix and excellent Dual imaging on both sides, choose
HoloContraBr.
There are slight price variations between all projection film polymers.
Relative to ambient light levels HolocontraM has the brighter image for the DJ.
Can you do the laminating for me?

Yes we can laminate and assemble the touch surface for you onto the laminate substrate ready for you to
mount onto a stand. Please inquire for pricing.
If I want to make my own HoloDesk™ surface what do I need to purchase?
You would to purchase the Projection Laminate and Interactive Kit if you wanted to laminate it yourself. You
can either purchase the Projection Laminate and Interactive Kit only. The Interactive Touch frame option is a
lot simpler and easier to install than the Interacive Edgeless laminate.
How do you ship the DIY HoloDesk ™ components?

We ship this in two tubes. One containing the interactive component and the other contains the projection
screen laminate.
How do you ship the Complete Plug-n-Play HoloDesk™?

We ship this in a rugged shipping ply crate that is glued, screwed complete with hand made foam cut outs etc
to protect all items.
How do you ship the DIY System if you laminate and supply the Glass surface HoloDesk™?
We ship this in rugged timber crate foam lining to protect the surface.
How much does it cost to ship the Holo Desk™ to my country?

This depends on whether we use Courier service, Air Cargo or LCL Ocean shipping. Cheapest is by sea and
takes on average 4-5 weeks. DIY components – Interactive and Projection polymers ship via courier and take
about 5 days.
Can I purchase the Floor stand for the DIY HoloDesk™ option?
Yes we ship this unpainted and with all fitting components including the projector mount solution. We ship this
in a rugged cardboard packaging.
Can you give me the costs for a HoloDesk?

Yes we have full price lists available in four currencies according to where you live in the world. Simply send

Can I pay for my HoloDesk ™ after I receive it?

We must receive you payment with your order. We are unable to provide credit terms.
What is the delivery time after I order my HoloDesk ™?

For the DIY set, delivery times is approximately 2-4 weeks after we receive your payment. We are working at
reducing this time period. The plug-n-play version of the The HoloDesk ™ currently varies according to size
and stocked components. It also varies whether it is a Framed or Edgeless solution.
