You may have taken part in a 90 Day Challenge in which you have read through the entire Bible
in 90 days and that is wonderfully enriching for those who serve God. Inspired by that and
some things I have heard in various places recently, I have decided to offer a new 90 Day
Challenge.
We often read the Bible just soaking up what we can. Maybe learning some history and
interesting tidbits we have missed in the past. We also tend to spend a lot of time reading for
doctrine, which is quite noble. However, as Christians we are to be like Christ and it has been
my experience, both long and varied, that we have not been challenged to read about the life
of Christ. We take bits and pieces, miracles and teachings and build a collage of what we think is
important to remember from His life and teachings. We focus on His miracles to be assured and
prove that He was the son of God. Yet, if we are to be like Christ, we should be students of His
life, character, and actions to know how to conduct our lives.
The 90 Day Challenge 2.0 is designed to be easy in the amount of reading done each day, so
that we can spend more time in understanding the person, nature, character, teachings, and
the general life of God͛s living Word. Doctrine is wonderful in that we gain understanding the
form and function of the Body of Christ, but understanding and imitating His life helps us to live
as His Body, both individually and collectively. Between the four Gospels there are 89 chapters,
read just one a day. You will have a day to make it up if you miss one and if you are like most
people you get side tracked for a few days you can still make up time easily. Remember as you
read each chapter, think about the humanity of Christ, His personality, how He treated people,
His teachings, His compassion. You might even do this several times focusing on a specific set of
traits. For example, after teaching a class on Agape love I added the challenge to look for the
qualities of Agape listed in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a as manifest in the actions and teachings of
Christ. It is my prayer that if you choose to accept this challenge your life will be enriched and
come to resemble our Savior more than ever before.
