Task 1

Create triangles, drawing from sides alone.

Construction
1. Open a new Sketchpad worksheet. (Click on tab T1 in your workbook.)
2. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select SEGMENT. Click, drag and release the mouse to draw
a straight line. Click on the second point, drag and release to form a V. Click on the last
point, drag and release the mouse on the first point to form a triangle.
3. Repeat step 2. twice more to create two more triangles.
4. On the EDIT Menu, select PREFERENCES. Click on the UNITS tab. For DISTANCE, select
CM for the UNITS and select TENTHS for the PRECISION. Click OK.
5. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER. Click the mouse on a blank part of the
worksheet to clear any selected objects. Click the mouse on the line segment to be
measured. On the MEASURE menu, select LENGTH. The length value will appear
onscreen, together with the points (for example : mAB = 4.7 cm).
6. Repeat step 5. to measure all the sides of the three triangles. As you measure, the
triangles will be labeled ABC, DEF and GHI.
7. Click and drag each side measurement statement next to the middle of the side
measured.
8. Click and drag any or all of the triangle vertices to adjust the triangle to form the shape
required. One triangle must be an equilateral triangle, the second must be an isosceles
triangle, while the third must be a scalene triangle. On the FILE menu, select PRINT
PREVIEW to check that all three triangles fit on a single A4 page. Click CANCEL to exit
PRINT PREVIEW.
9. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select TEXT. Click and drag the mouse under a triangle, and
in the box that appears, type in its name. Repeat this process under the other two
triangles.
10. On the FILE Menu, select SAVE.

Demonstrate
Show your completed figures to your Teacher.

Answer Sheet
Write out definitions of these types of triangles, based on their sides :
(i) Equilateral (ii) Isosceles (iii) Scalene

Task 2
Create triangles, drawing from angles alone.

Construction
1. Open a new Sketchpad worksheet. (Click on tab T2 in your workbook.)
For ANGLE, select
DEGREES for the UNITS and select UNITS for the PRECISION. Click OK.
5. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER. Click the mouse on a blank part of the
worksheet to clear any selected objects.
Click the mouse on the three points that form the angle to be measured, ensuring that the
angle vertex is the SECOND point selected. On the MEASURE menu, select ANGLE. The
angle value will appear onscreen, with the angle labels.
6. Repeat step 5. to measure all the angles of the three triangles. As you measure, the
triangles will be labeled ABC, DEF and GHI.
7. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER and click and drag each angle measurement
statement next to the vertex of that angle.
8. Click and drag any or all of the triangle vertices to adjust the triangle to form the shape
required. One triangle must be an obtuse-angled triangle, the second must be an acute-
angled triangle, while the third must be a right-angled triangle. On the FILE menu, select
PRINT PREVIEW to check that all three triangles fit on a single A4 page. Click CANCEL
to exit PRINT PREVIEW.

Write out definitions of these types of triangles, based on their angles :
(i) Obtuse (ii) Acute (iii) Right-angled

Task 3
Create as many different triangles as possible using combinations of side and angle
situations. An example could be an isosceles right-angled triangle.

Plan
1. Write the full name of each triangle to be constructed, and draw a diagram of each
triangle to show the key features.
2. Show this plan with diagrams to your Teacher BEFORE commencing work.

Construction
1. Open a new Sketchpad worksheet. (Click on tab T3A in your workbook.)
2. On the EDIT Menu, select PREFERENCES. Click on the UNITS tab. For DISTANCE, select
CM for the UNITS and select TENTHS for the PRECISION. For ANGLE, select DEGREES
for the UNITS and select UNITS for the PRECISION. Click OK.
3. Construct a triangle, measure each angle, and measure each side. (See Tasks 1 and 2)
4. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER to adjust each vertex until you have created
the required triangle.
5. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select TEXT. Click and drag the mouse under a triangle, and
in the box that appears, type in its full name.
6. NO MORE than four triangles should be drawn on one worksheet page. On the FILE
menu, select PRINT PREVIEW to check that all the triangles you have drawn, fit on a
single A4 page. Click CANCEL to exit PRINT PREVIEW.
7. On the EDIT Menu, select SAVE.

Special Notes
If you need to construct more than four triangles, you will need to add another worksheet to
your document. On the FILE Menu, select DOCUMENT OPTIONS. In the window that
opens, enter “Page One” for the PAGE NAME and click on the SHOW PAGE TABS button.
Click on the ADD PAGE bar, and select BLANK PAGE. Name this new page “Page Two”.
(Note that you can now see tabs for Page One and Page Two at the bottom of the worksheet.)
Now click OK. On the FILE Menu, select SAVE to save your workbook.

If you are using a workbook, put the extra figures on worksheet T3B.

Demonstrate
Show your completed figures to your Teacher.

Answer Sheet
Write down all the possible combinations of triangle names that can be made using angle
and side titles. Put a tick alongside those combinations that you have constructed.
