1.3 A 220 µ F capacitor is required to store 11mJ of energy. What voltage needs to
appear across plates of the capacitor?

1.6 A C-R circuit consists of resistor of 2 M Ω connected in series with a capacitor of

10 000 µ F. If the capacitor is initially discharged, determine the capacitor
voltage 10s after the circuit is connected to a 5 V supply.

Question 2 – Recognise a variety of complex wave forms and explain how they are
produced from sinusoidal wave forms

2.1 The waveform shown in figure 2.1 below shows common types of waveform that
are generated by various electronic circuits. These waveforms may be termed as
sine waves, square waves, triangular waves and pulse waves. Assuming the sine
wave is swinging between a maximum positive voltage of 10v and a minimum
voltage of -10v. Assuming the frequency of each wave is 50Hz, sketch to scale
the resulting waveform for the following:
a) when adding waveform A and B

voltage.

2.3 A complex waveform is described by the equation:

a) the peak value of the current;
b) the rms value of the current;
c) the frequency of the current;

e) the instantaneous value of the current at t = 2 ms.

Question 5 (Merit)

5.1 An instrumentation amplifier employs an input transducer which has an

effective noise resistance of 100 Ω. If the transducer operates at a temperature of
- 10° C and it is connected to an amplifier with a gain of 2000 and a bandwidth of
2 kHz, determine the noise voltage produced at the output of the amplifier (you
may assume that the amplifier itself is ‘noise free’).

5.2 In the absence of a signal, the Y-amplifier of an oscilloscope produces an

output of 50mV at a temperature of 26° C. If the amplifier has a bandwidth of 10
MHz and a voltage gain of 1000, determine the effective noise resistance at the
input of the Y-amplifier.

5.3 An amplifier produces an output of 4 W when a signal is applied. When the

input signal is disconnected, the output power falls to 10 mW. Determine the
(signal-plus-noise)-to-noise ratio expressed in decibels.

5.4 The output signal from an audio pre-amplifier has a (signal-plus-noise)-to-

noise ratio of 40 dB. If the output power is 10 W when a signal is present,
determine the output power when the signal is absent.

Q 6 (Distinction)

6.1 A manufacturer produces integrated circuit amplifier modules that have

voltage gains which vary from 12 000 to 24 000 due to production tolerances. If
the modules are to be used with 5% negative feedback applied, determine the
maximum and minimum values of voltage gain.

6.2 An amplifier has an open-loop gain of 200. If this device is to be used in an

amplifier stage having a precise voltage gain of 50, determine the amount of
negative feedback that will be required.

6.3 A Wien bridge oscillator is based on the circuit shown in Figure Q.6.3 but R1 and
R2 are replaced by a dual-gang potentiometer. If C1 = C2 = 22 nF determine the
values of R1 and R2 required to produce an output at exactly 400 Hz. The DC
supply to the OpAmp is +/- 10 v.

Determine and sketch the output waveform showing the peak-to-peak voltage produced
by the circuit shown above.

Distinction grade criteria

Question 2 - Analyse an information system

Describe how the road speed of a motor vehicle can be conveyed to the driver.
Draw a diagram of the information system stating the basic components used.

Question 3 - Describe the methods by which electrical signals control energy flow
and analyse this energy flow control system
A simple energy control system is required to control the water temperature and water
level in a processing tank from which water flows at a rate depending on process
demand. Sketch a block diagram showing appropriate control system devices and
describe and analyse how the system functions.

Question 4 – (Merit)

For Question 3 (above) replace your block diagram with a basic schematic diagram
for your prototype process control system where the output rate of flow of water,
temperature and level of the water are continuously monitored and controlled. The
hot water tank is to be utilised for household purposes (cleaning and washing, etc.
only).

is supplying constant flow of water into the tank.

For your prototype process control system clearly describe the following:
