ASSIGNMENT 2
Scenario:
You are working as an electrical engineering technician in a laboratory
which contains electrical, mechanical & fluid mechanics experiments. Your
line manager asked you to prepare handouts for the training purposes for
the experiments in the laboratory. Such handouts will be helpful for the
trainees performing the experiments. You were asked to:

Learning Outcome 3 – Apply DC and AC Theory
1.3 A 220 µ F capacitor is required to store 11mJ of energy. What voltage needs to
appear across plates of the capacitor?
1.7 An inductor is wound on a toroidal core having a mean length of 0.25m and cross-
sectional area 0.075m². If the core material has a permeability of 1200, determine
the number of turns required on the coil if a flux of 0.5T is to be produced by a
current of 2A flowing in the coil.
Question 2 – Recognise a variety of complex wave forms and explain how they are
produced from sinusoidal wave forms
2.1 The waveform shown in figure 2.1 below shows common types of waveform that
are generated by various electronic circuits. These waveforms may be termed as
sine waves, square waves, triangular waves and pulse waves. Assuming the sine
wave is swinging between a maximum positive voltage of 10v and a minimum
voltage of -10v. Assuming the frequency of each wave is 50Hz, sketch to scale
the resulting waveform for the following:
a) when adding waveform A and B
b) when adding waveform B and C
c) when adding waveform C and D

2.2 A complex waveform is described by the equation:
v = 100 sin (100 πt ) + 50 sin ( 200 πt − π / 2 ) .
Determine, graphically, the shape of the waveform and estimate the peak-peak
voltage.

2.6 The complex waveform shown in figure 2.6 below is given by:
v = 100 sin(100 π t) + 50 sin(200 π t)V.
Determine:
a) The amplitude of the fundamental
b) The frequency of the fundamental
c) The order of any harmonic components present
d) The amplitude of harmonic components present
e) The phase angle of any harmonic components present (relative to the
fundamental)

Q 6 (Distinction)
6.3 A Wien bridge oscillator is based on the circuit shown in Figure Q.6.3 but R1 and
R2 are replaced by a dual-gang potentiometer. If C1 = C2 = 22 nF determine the
values of R1 and R2 required to produce an output at exactly 400 Hz. The DC
supply to the OpAmp is +/- 10 v.

Determine and sketch the output waveform showing the peak-to-peak voltage produced
by the circuit shown above.

Question 3 - Describe the methods by which electrical signals control energy flow
and analyse this energy flow control system
A simple energy control system is required to control the water temperature and water
level in a processing tank from which water flows at a rate depending on process
demand. Sketch a block diagram showing appropriate control system devices and
describe and analyse how the system functions.
7
Question 4 – (Merit)
For Question 3 (above) replace your block diagram with a basic schematic diagram
for your prototype process control system where the output rate of flow of water,
temperature and level of the water are continuously monitored and controlled. The
hot water tank is to be utilised for household purposes (cleaning and washing, etc.
only).
Assuming, the water tank is heated with an emersion heater and the cold water mains
is supplying constant flow of water into the tank.
For your prototype process control system clearly describe the following:
(a) your design specification and parameters for the system,
(b) the type of sensors you would use to monitor and control the output flow,
temperature and level of the water for safe use.
Question 5 - (Distinction)
For Question 4 (above) suggest a fail-safe mechanism to ensure the output flow,
temperature and level of the water in the tanks are maintained within acceptable
limits and hence:
