york® tempo ™ air-cooled scroll chillers

Setting a new pace

for a new world
Go with an advanced
environmental and
economical design
Keep pace with change
To keep pace with today’s — and tomorrow’s — demands,
a packaged chiller must deliver greater efficiency, economy,
and versatility. That’s why Johnson Controls, the leader in
HVACR equipment and controls, offers the YORK® Tempo™
air-cooled scroll chiller. It is a completely self-contained
solution with a compact size to fit roof or ground installations,
and an optional hydronic-pump kit to simplify connection
with new or existing systems. The Tempo chiller is a true
plug-and-play unit that combines an environmentally
responsible design with a low cost of ownership, protecting
the Planet and your pocketbook.

Environmental responsibility is standard

A Tempo chiller selection lets you be a leader in environmental
design through technological innovation, not added
equipment cost.

Go with HFC-410A refrigerant: The Tempo chiller is

specifically designed for HFC-410A, which has zero ozone-
depletion potential (ODP) and no phase-out date set by the
Environmental Protection Agency. HCFC refrigerants,
in comparison, are linked to ozone depletion and are being
phased out under the Montreal Protocol. And thanks to
an advanced design, the Tempo chiller’s refrigerant circuit
requires 30 – 50% less refrigerant, further conserving resources.

the Antarctic ozone hole.

Get LEED qualification — always: Because a Tempo
chiller responds to refrigerant ODP and refrigerant-charge
issues, it always earns you credit under the U.S. Green
Building Council’s LEED® (Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design) rating system. The program
includes an Enhanced Refrigerant Management Credit —
and a Tempo chiller always qualifies.

products that support the

like Tempo chillers.
Off-design operation occurs about 99% of the time,
conditions where a Tempo chiller is highly efficient.

Low noise is big news: Not just the Planet, but people also
benefit from Tempo technology. That’s because it offers
superior standard noise levels — as low as 68dB at 30 feet.
Attenuation options can drop noise levels to 62dB, about
the sound of a nearby conversation. That’s the kind of quiet
environment that makes neighbors and occupants happy.

Higher energy efficiency makes a world of difference

The advanced Tempo design also reduces global warming
and carbon-dioxide emissions by cutting chiller energy
consumption. Design efficiency always meets or exceeds
ASHRAE 90.1 — Design for Building Efficiency. And it offers
the industry’s best off-design efficiency in the real-world
conditions that occur for over 99% of all operating hours.
Compared to the average chiller, a Tempo system uses
up to 15% less electricity!

which reduces energy costs and global warming.

Cutting the total cost
of ownership

Get the added advantage of operating-cost savings

The Tempo air-cooled scroll chiller is specially designed to
offer many ownership-cost advantages. It lowers operating
costs through improved efficiency, reliability, and maintenance.

Real savings at real-world conditions

Most of a chiller’s operating hours are spent at off-design
conditions. Only about 1% of the time occurs at design
conditions. That’s why the ASHRAE 90.1 standard takes
into account performance at all conditions, with the Integrated
Part Load Value (IPLV). As established by Air-conditioning
and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) 550/590 standard, IPLV is
based on the weighted average of different building types,
locations and system designs. The Tempo chiller’s IPLV leads
the industry, so compared to other chillers, annual operating
costs can be 15 – 20% lower.

Load Value (IPLV), the best measure of chiller annual
energy consumption.

4
Corrosion-resistant coils are more reliable
The Tempo chiller uses all-aluminum coils to minimize
the occurrence of galvanic corrosion. Conventional coils
with copper tubes and aluminum fins can experience galvanic
corrosion at the contact point between the two metals.
If the contact is compromised, heat transfer — and efficiency —
become reduced over time.

The Tempo coil uses a microchannel design similar to an

automotive radiator, with aluminum header, tubes, and
fins. The all-aluminum construction eliminates points of
galvanic corrosion, making a Tempo chiller ideal for mild salt
environments and coastal applications. A zinc coating provides
further protection. The end result: thermal performance is the
same or better than copper-tube coils with epoxy-coated fins.

Easier maintenance saves twice

Because the Tempo design uses significantly less refrigerant,

save maintenance costs.

5
More building...less chiller

Maximize usable space, minimize installed cost

A Tempo chiller is lighter, smaller, and quieter to create a
better application with less installed cost and more usable
space in your building. The lowest-weight chiller available
in its capacity range, the Tempo chiller is 20 – 35% lighter
than our previous generation chiller. And the footprint is
significantly smaller.

What can you do with the trim Tempo design? Reduce

the size of the mechanical room — or recover useable space.
Eliminate the mechanical room altogether with a hydronic-
pump kit and outdoor air-handling system. Add tons of
capacity without adding tons of structural support.

Low noise also lowers building costs

Many codes require special measures to reduce property-
line chiller noise, which can add to building expense. But the
Tempo chiller has the lowest dB in its class. It’s so quiet,
you can eliminate or lower the screen-wall height to reduce
installation costs. There’s also no need to position the chiller
towards the center of the building, letting you reduce the
structural and rigging costs.

Get the configuration that fits

The Tempo chiller keeps you in synch with various application
demands. Performance, sound, coil, electronic, and
hydronic-pump options are all configurable to meet your
exact requirements.

Performance configuration — an industry first: A Tempo

chiller’s performance can be configured with standard- and
high-efficiency models from 70 to 150 tons capacity, which
is an industry first. Standard models meet or exceed ASHRAE
90.1 with 9.6 EER minimum efficiency. High-efficiency models
deliver the highest available efficiency — up to 10.8 EER.
In either case, every Tempo model provides the best
IPLV efficiency you can buy.

Tune in sound options: Specify standard low-noise

condenser fans, or use the ultra-quiet variety for quietest
possible performance. Utilizing an optional compressor
blanket, a Tempo chiller produces the lowest sound output
in its class.

exposed end coil can be added for hail resistance. In any case,
the transverse Tempo coils provide outstanding protection
from accidental damage and wind-blown debris.

Hydronic and refrigeration options: Pump kits can be
