Success in these exams will ensure progression onto the main part of the
course consisting of the level 8 units.

Students will be expected to arrive in Glasgow in late August and will be

expected to complete after a total of 42 weeks in the UK.

On successful completion of the HND students will be given a Merchant Navy

Overseas Cadet Programme: General overview 12/07/07

Under a recent agreement made with the UK Maritime and Coastguard
Agency the sea service required for this programme has now been set at 15
months.

On completion of the required sea service students will return to GCNS to

complete their studies on the OOW Post HND Course.

This course has three start dates during the academic year, October, January
and March. Each course lasts approximately 17-18 weeks.

During this time cadets will prepare for the MCA written and Oral
examinations. They will undergo training in electronic navigation including
simulator training and also take an EDH and signals exams.

GMDSS, CPSCRB and Advanced Firefighting courses can be arranged,

although the MCA will allow these certificates to be issued from approved
centres in India.

On completion of the OOW Post HND Course cadets will be issued with a UK
Officer of the watch Certificate of Competency (STCW 95 Reg II/1)

Subsequent progression to Chief Mate’s certification requires 18 months sea

time serving as a fully qualified deck officer.

Students may then return to GCNS to undertake the Chief Mate Post HND
Course. This course lasts 18 weeks and prepares students for both MCA
written and Oral examinations. They will also study marine Engineering for
Deck Officers and be required to complete a simulator course and a signals
examination.

Medical Care aboard ship courses can either be done at GCNS or in India.

Successful completion of this course will lead to the award of a UK Chief

Mates/Master Certificate of Competency (STCW 95 Reg II/2)

Progression is then available to Masters Certificate of Competency after

obtaining 18 months sea time with a Chief Mates certificate.

The Masters course at GCNS consists of a highly concentrated four week

course preparing students for the Masters Orals examination.

A Career path diagram is attached with this document.
