Edgar Evins Marina was recently recognized for their exemplary action and
commitment to pollution prevention and
water protection on Center Hill Lake
by being awarded the “Clean Marina”
certificate and flag by Lt. Col. Anthony
P. Mitchell, Commander of the Nashville
District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Those that know the Captain of this
marina, the graceful Kaye Tuggle, and
her fine team are not surprised. Edgar
Evins Marina has a reputation of going
over the top to serve and assist their loyal
clients. They take the marina business
seriously. Kaye made it a mission to work
towards this coveted voluntary award and
has spent many years improving areas
of the marina that needed improvement to meet the expectations of the Corps
of Engineers to preserve and protect beautiful Center Hill Lake. Her team has
worked tirelessly to achieve all the goals. Today, Edgar Evins Marina can boast
proudly of being the first and only “Clean Marina” on this attractive lake. Their
many efforts are evident by looking around at their exceptional marina. Kaye’s
philosophy during this challenge and rallying cry to her team was let’s “Go from
Good to Great”. Her leadership and dedication provided the first free state-of-
the-art pump outs at their docks, responsible solid waste disposal, and many
improvements to protect the waterways. On a gorgeous June 15th, 2010, many
politicians and dignitaries were on hand to present the award as Kaye smiled and
humbly accepted the designation and honor as they hoisted the Clean Marina
flag over the facility. She also graciously accepted the proclamation from Ten-
nessee State Senator Mae Beavers signed by Governor Phil Bredeson honoring
her for her work, dedication and receiving of this impressive award. Everyone
is encouraged to strive to keep our waters clean and free of pollution of all types.
Help preserve and protect our precious natural resources for the enjoyment of
not only this, but future generations. Edgar Evins Marina is the marina that ad-
joins the Edgar Evins State Park. It is conveniently located between Cookeville
and Nashville, off I-40. The forest lined road that leads to the marina has an
abundance of wildlife. It is not uncommon to see deer, wild turkey, pheasant,
and rabbits strolling along the roadway, plus the occasional eagle soaring across

Hurricane Marina is known as the “granddaddy of the marinas” on Center
Hill Lake where the folks looking for the
“wow” factor come to be part of a family
boating atmosphere. With over 600 slips,
this year round marina offers some of the
largest houseboats, yachts and pontoon
boats on the lake. Many people enjoy the
lake, marina and boater’s cammaderie
year round due to the fact that most of the
boats have screened in boat enclosures.
These enclosures offer opportunities to sit
out and enjoy the great outdoor boating
life, any time of year without the nuisance
of bugs and direct exposure to the ele-
ments. These custom boat enclosures
are very functional and manufactured
locally at Sligo Canvas Shop. Hurricane Marina is nestled in the lake’s only
natural harbor and has the reputation of the being the marina where things are
always going on. The boaters love the social events, family atmosphere, and
being where entertainment is the mode of operation. One event is the popular
progressive dinners that many of the slip customers participate in. It is hard not
to get to know your boating neighbors and co-managers, Lisa Barton and Bill
Sloan who keep the activities flowing. On a recent visit to the marina, Lisa was
so looking forward to the first hints of spring and the flurry of activity at Hur-
ricane Marina, she was smiling and so exuberant. Some of the popular events
include the last Friday of the month Shrimp Boil, where the bounty overflows
with shrimp and all the fixings. Their fireworks bonanza is the largest on the
lake. Boaters participate by decorating their boats; there is lots of live music and
loads of fun. The Halloween event is no doubt one of the favorites among the
boaters who love to dress up and to see and be the best of the best. The annual
corn hole event is also a blast for the novice and those who proclaim to be pretty
darn good at corn hole. The laughter, friendship and the social atmosphere are
evident at Hurricane Marina. If you want to enjoy your summers and weekend

also spent the last six years updating and transforming one of the oldest marinas
on the lake into one of the most state-of-the-art marinas by adding amenities to

catering, overnight dockage, boat launch ($5.00 fee for non-members), free WI-
FI at the dock, 200 amp electrical hook-ups, free sanitary pump-outs and keypad
- 24/7 security. Hurricane also loves to serve their guests with excellent service.
At their superb restaurant, the Blue Water Grille they offer some outstanding
meals with lakeside dining and delicious cuisine. Blue Water Grille opens at the
end of March and stays open through the end of the year for their awesome New

Hidden Harbor Marina is an idyllic marina tucked away on beautiful Center
Hill Lake that caters to families looking
to get away from the hustle and bustle
of their daily routines and hectic careers.
The Leiser family, Brian and Stacy moved
here from California over 14 years ago.
Their whole family (kids included) has
worked to offer exceptional service, fun
and a special ambience. There have been
some major changes over the winter. De-
spite the snow and cold, Hidden Harbor is
boasting of a new ship’s store and restau-
rant built by their team. The Leiser family
has been very busy. Stacy and Brian are
proud that they were able to accomplish
most of these changes with their fine team.
Stacy smiles when she talks about their many talents and those of husband Brian
who designed everything and led the crew - right down to the new wide concrete
walkways and docks leading to the new ship’s store. The high cathedral style
ceilings are lovely - made out of knotty pine tongue and groove (designed by
Brian). The new ship’s store offers their awesome cheeseburgers, hamburgers,
chicken wings, grilled chicken, and (my favorite) Hunt Brothers pizza made
fresh to order! You can order ahead on Channel 8 on your marina radio and eas-
ily pick up some pizzas for lunch, dinner, or for a family gathering. Everyone
loves pizza and Hunt Brothers pizza is delicious, especially the vegetarian pizza
- or the meat lovers for all the meat lovers out there. The restaurant will have
several tables available for dine in or you can take it back to your boat, campsite
or cabin. Wi-Fi is available in the store, so if you need to, you can check your
emails. The ship’s store will also have t-shirts, souvenirs, marina and fishing
supplies and of course candy, snacks and some of those grocery items that you
might have forgotten. Hidden Harbor is a perfect secluded slice of heaven with
camping, campsites for your RV, cabins and 4 new 18’ x 50’ boat slips. The
camping and cabin area is like being in the forest with lots of trees, tremendous
lake views, picnic areas, hillside fishing with 16 campsites with full hook-ups
and 9 sites for tent camping. There are 4 new one bedroom cabins that offer
all the amenities. Over the past few years, they have also added some fun and
sassy, double decker pontoon boats with the largest, fastest, 150 HP motors
on Center Hill Lake. These primary color pontoon boats (including Volunteer
Orange, Sunshine Yellow, and Bold Purple) are fun, spacious and great for a
family outing on the lake. The kids (and adults) will love the water slides that
will keep the kids busy all day long. Hidden Harbor Marina has it all, cabins,
camping, pontoon and houseboat rentals and a restaurant. The Leisers have
four children who have or still are part of the business - Sean, Ryan, Samantha
and Brandon. They know most of their regular customers and their children’s
names and love to see them return again and again. There is a casual, laid back,
family atmosphere which brings families back every year. One of their family
members (eleven year old dock dog Riley) died several weeks ago but will be
included in the new lake mural that will be in the new store. The mural depicts
the wonderful memorable times on Center Hill Lake at Hidden Harbor Marina.

Center Hill Marina and Yacht Club is a full service marina conveniently
located off of Hwy. 96 and I-40 featuring
over 600 boat slip rentals, lakeview cabin
rentals and pontoon boat rentals. Center
Hill Marina is tucked away in a attractive
cove where they have been delighting
vacationers for over fifty years. They
are known for their floating home-style
restaurant – The Coppertop Restaurant
where visitors and locals alike enjoy their
homemade cuisine, especially the desserts.
Marina manager, Mistie Mauldin is proud
of their newest addition, an expansive
fresh salad bar to complement any meal.
The Coppertop Restaurant has an excellent
ambience with a casual dining atmosphere
which delights boaters and visitors throughout the season. Restaurant Manager,
Helen Maynard loves to tell about their signature hand-breaded catfish and
one of their dinner favorites - the “Redneck Nachos”. The “Redneck Nachos”
are topped with hickory smoked pulled pork barbecue, homemade barbecue
sauce and salsa, white beans and a blend of cheeses to create this delicious
concoction. Their homemade desserts and pies are one of the things that keep
customers coming back with favorites like banana pudding, chocolate pie and
the peanut butter fudge pie - irresistible. You must make sure to save room for
dessert and burn a few extra calories before you come in by swimming a few
more laps or walking down the windy road leading to the marina. I don’t know
about you, but I love a good old fashioned, home cooked, country breakfast
on the weekends. Boy, you can sure find a delightful spread at their breakfast
buffet which is served on Saturday and Sundays during the season. You will
find favorites like biscuits and gravy, eggs, bacon, potatoes and made-to-order
French toast. There is no microwave cooking in this restaurant. Everything
is made from scratch. They are open during season, from mid-May through

Sligo Marina is owned by Guy Luna, Jr. and Gary Luna. It is truly a family
owned and operated marina and has
been since 1981. Sligo Marina has
gone through major renovations to offer

Kay is returning as Restaurant and Store
Manager. He will gladly assist you with
renting one of 5 pontoon boats or one of
the 6 cabins that are available. Dennis
was the Concessions Manager for Sligo
during the 1998-1999 seasons. He is
very excited to be back. He has been a
boater for years and will provide a fun
and friendly atmosphere for the marina.
Dennis speaks lovingly about his vision
and the changes going on at the marina. The Wheelhouse Restaurant has
also undergone major renovations and will be offering a new menu with what
Dennis promises will be the best variety and most tasty appetizers on Center
Hill Lake. His favorite is their new chicken wings. If you haven’t tried the Sligo
Burger, you haven’t tried the best burger on Center Hill Lake. This popular
huge hamburger steak offers all the fixings. Top this off with some of their
new Mexican cheese sticks or onion rings! The new 1,000 square foot covered
pavilion area outside the Wheelhouse will offer additional seating, plus an area
for entertainment. Dennis envisions lots of fun with hot summer nights and folks
picking and playing under the wonderful new covered outside seating area. What
a great place for a wedding, family reunion, special get together or meeting.
The covered slips are being expanded and upgraded, plus pontoon and cabin

Cookeville Boat Dock (CBD) is a vibrant, multigenerational family business
where Mama Bear Frida Gaw (Nash) and
her children have operated the marina
since 1967. Frida ran the business
with her husband Reece Nash (who
passed away several years ago) raising
their children on the lake. They are all
passionate about the marina business
and love Center Hill Lake (CHL).
Daughter Kimberly and her Mom are
avid about wakeboarding and wake
surfing. You will often see them out on
the clear waters of CHL fine tuning their
skills. Kimberly loves the sport and
recently won third place in the World
Wake Surfing Competition – coming
in just behind a lady from Switzerland. Kimberly takes her responsibilities at
the marina very seriously. However, every chance she gets she is out on the
wakeboard or really excited about one of their newest outdoor toys - the Paddle
Board. This is a really cool, flat water canoe that you stand up on and paddle.
It has three fins in the back so you can ride the waves or wake! They offered
to get me/“Annie” out on the infamous Paddle, but I wasn’t brave enough!
Kimberly did get me on an INDO Board, which is a great indoor trainer to gain
balance, work your upper back and stomach that gets you used to the balance
needed for wakeboarding, surfing or the paddle board. CBD is on the northern
shores of CHL and just down the road from Burgess Falls State Natural Area
(one of the Burckhard favorite hiking places). CBD is known for their large
selection of top merchandise brands O’Brien, Ronix, Hyperlite, Surftech and
more plus they are available to give expert advice and lessons. One of the new
O’Brien items is “Le Trainer” which is a training wakeboard for children. It
is completely safe and a great tool to train children to control their balance and
learn the techniques of wakeboarding/surfing. They are always trying to get the
latest and newest items. They go to the annual world shows to talk to the pros,
get the latest and most technologically advanced wakeboards and accessories.
On June 22nd, one of the pros will be coming in to give a clinic for novices
and to also teach some more advanced techniques. These pros can do some
unbelievable stunts! Last year, Danny Harf, known for his 1260, came to CBD
to give a clinic! Frida’s children Kimberly, Christina and Carl all have their
responsibilities and love being down at the dock with Mom. Kimberly manages
the restaurant, The Lighthouse Restaurant, which is known for their world
famous catfish (hand filleted and breaded) served with all the fixings. They also
offer fantastic hamburger steaks, burgers, salads, pizza and down home cooking.
Armen has been the cook in the restaurant since the beginning and has a creative

Area is a beautiful park with
magnificent cascading waterfalls
located southwest of Cookeville,
TN. The Area has more wa-
terfalls in the shortest distance
than any other park around. It
is an awesome day trip destina-
tion to hike down some easy to
moderate trails and see some of
the most beautiful waterfalls and spectacular overlooks on the
Falling Water River. The Burckhard family loves to come here
for the day with a picnic lunch in the backpack to hike down to
the granddaddy of falls - the 136 ft. high waterfall - where you
can stand at the bottom and feel the mist on your face. On a
recent excursion with the Jordan family, the expectations were
high and the excitement accelerated every step down the trail
to see the wonder of God’s hand in this beautiful setting. With
four active boys running down the trail and the parents follow-
ing behind, the crescendo of reaching the bottom of the falls was
nothing less than awesome. (Please take note that the Tennessee
State Park system classifies the hike to the bottom of the falls as
very strenuous.) We took lots of pictures on this mild February
day and stopped to enjoy our picnic lunch on some rocks next
to the river. The park is home to over 300 species of trees and
plants. Even during the winter, I saw some wonderful ferns that
I hadn’t seen before, luscious moss growing everywhere, and the
signs of impending spring in the air were exhilarating. This park
also has a historical and cultural significance that we discovered
while walking along the edge of the river and along the trail.
We tried to guess what the old, rusted out motors and the signs
of pulleys and piping systems were used for. We guessed right -

electricity, logging and a gristmill. One of the first white settlers
to the area was Thomas Burgess, a Revolutionary War veteran.
He settled in the area in the late 18th century when he received
a land grant for payment for his service during the war. By the
late 19th century a gristmill and sawmill were in operation on the
river. This area was rich in logging and the Falling Water River
played a key role in providing electricity to the many loggers,
farming families, and citizens of nearby Cookeville. Today,
Burgess Falls is just a marvelous place to come and let the chil-
dren play on the playground while the family enjoys the picnic
pavilions with 16 open sites with tables, grills and bathroom
facilities. The park also boasts of a spectacular Native Butterfly
Garden. The Native Butterfly Garden was the winner of the
2006 Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award in Excel-
lence in Parks and Recreation. The overlook to the first water-
fall is just a short walk from the parking lot. For those that find
walking a bit of a challenge, this is a great opportunity to enjoy
the area. Due to the proximity to Center Hill Lake, this is a
perfect trip for the family on a slightly rainy day or first thing in
the morning before hitting the lake. The park opens at 8:00AM
and closes ½ hour before dark each day. The park is closed
when the river is high or when ice or snow is on the roads and/or
trails. Be sure to stop at the nearby MMKM Family Produce
on your way in to pick up some delicious fresh produce to make
the most of the picnic you are sure to want to bring. Take time
to stop to enjoy nature by listening to the sounds, smells and
sights of God’s beautiful creation. The park is located at 4000

The Inn at Evins Mill is a grand historic inn that offers a wonderful escape
with plenty of grandeur, peace and comfort in an environment of old world
stately ambiance. The history of the property likely dates back to 1824 when a
Tennessee Land Grant recorded it as Lockhart Mill. Several families owned it
over the years, including the Lockhart, Lawrence and Webb families. Probably
the best known of previous owners was the honorable Edgar Evins from
Smithville. Edgar Evins was a state senator and successful businessman in
the banking, oil and various other retail businesses. He purchased this
magnificent piece of property in 1937 and built the present mill in
conjunction with another business he was involved in, down in
Lebanon - Martha White flour. The Evins family built the main
lodge using logs from older log homes from Tennessee and North
Carolina. The poplar flooring is beautiful! The Evins family
used the property as their summer retreat for many years. The
location was ideal because it is situated next to the bluffs with
cool streams flowing below – making this a much cooler
spot before the days of air conditioning. Mrs. Evins passed
the property to her son, Joe L. Evins (U.S. Congressman
1946-1976). He used it as a political retreat for some time.
Several governors of Tennessee including Buford Ellington,
Estes Kefauver, and Frank Clement visited the Congressman
here, as did Evins’ good friends Albert Gore Sr. and his son
Albert Gore Jr. In the early 80’s, Evins gave the property to
Vanderbilt University and in 1991 to professional businessman
Bill Cochran of Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. Mr.
Cochran used it for several years as a private retreat for his family
and business and called it “The Mill.” In early 1994, he and son
William Cochran formed the Cochran Management Company which
acquired the property and today have developed it into one the best kept
secrets in Tennessee. The Inn at Evins Mill offers an all inclusive getaway with
comfortable bluff rooms. All have balconies that overlook the flowing creek.
They are modern, but rustic. Superb. The Inn has been used as a corporate

the limestone pillar entrance, your worries and stress melt away. Head Chef
Tina Clark and charming Christopher Dotson greeted us with a warm smile
and immediately made us feel welcome. The fragrant aromas of this lovely
building put a smile on my face as it reminded me of my “Oma and Opa’s” old
farmhouse in Germany. The flowers left behind from the wedding the night
before were beautiful. Weddings and receptions at The Inn at Evins Mill are
spectacular. The setting is perfect for capturing those special moments
on camera. They host about 20 or so weddings a year. The main
lodge has a complementary library of books, videos, DVDs, games
and CD’s plus an awesome game room in the gristmill which is
sure to keep all children and families happy and content. One
of the most memorable moments of any vacation is the meals.
The Inn at Evins Mill knows how to satisfy their guests. They
are working to transition the menu to locally grown organic
produce and hormone free foods making for better taste and
quality. The evening meal was superb starting with our
decadent appetizer, Benton’s quesadilla, filled with roasted red
peppers, spinach, scrumptious bacon and Colby jack cheese.
The flavors harmonized so well. We topped it off with a very
good Argentinean Malbec red wine. The main course was a
filet topped with a creamy horseradish sauce and scalloped
potatoes. The other choice was prawns served with a red
pepper sauce, grits and creamy scalloped potatoes. Everything
was perfect with candlelight and white linen tablecloths in a very
intimate, cozy setting. The dessert was a key lime tart with fresh
whipped cream. Mmmmmm….. The beauty, splendor and the many
special touches that The Inn at Evins Mill offers are too numerous to
mention. This a perfect place for a special birthday (I celebrated my 49th),
anniversary, couples getaway, corporate or business retreat, wedding, family
reunion or a great day trip. William Cochran and his team are here to please

DeKalb County Fair
Before the dawn of the Civil War, the
DeKalb County Fair was chartered
by a special act of the Tennessee State
Legislature on April 15, 1856. It was
to be located in the small town of
Alexandria near the banks of Hickman
Creek across from the current location
of the downtown square. Another note
of interest for those who enjoy history:
it is said that during the Civil War, the
fairgrounds also served as an encamp-
ment location for Confederate General
John Hunt Morgan’s Kentucky Raiders
unit prior to their expedition into Ohio
in 1863. With such a rich and color-
ful history of over 150 years, it is no
wonder that this fair is fondly referred to as “The Grandpa
Fair of the South”. This award winning fair is the longest run-
ning county fair in the region. There is always a great line up
of things to see and do – pageants, shows, rides and exhibits to
name a few. There is something for almost every age and taste.
An amazing thing happens at county fairs; almost everyone
allows their inner youth to shine through. Communities come
together to enjoy a week of fun and excitement. People visit
with friends that they haven’t seen in some time and get away
from the everyday routine that sometimes gets to be boring
during the “dog days of summer”. Who can help but to have a
great time with all the fond memories that come flooding back
with all the sites, smells, and unmistakable sounds filling the
evening air! The exhibits and agricultural shows that celebrate
rural living are showcased during the fair – prized animals,
garden delights, canned goods, handcrafts, art, and so much
more. Beauty pageants and a vintage fashion show, talent show
(DeKalb Idol), truck and tractor pull, demolition derby, and
concerts are just a few of the other events that have added to
the evening line up of things to do in years past. 2010 offered

Sheri Cairns. Kaye Tuggle, who prides
herself in offering the best to her visitors,
became acquainted with Sheri through
the Upper Cumberland Women’s Club.
She found irresistible her passion, vitality
and work ethic. Sheri has worked on an off

with the dream of having her own restaurant one day.
This was a perfect marriage and the rest is history. Sheri has put together an
awesome team to serve incredible meals, desserts, pastries and gourmet coffees
for the 2011 boating season! Chef Tokyo (Pat Chiles) has over 30 years of
experience as a chef. At a recent visit, he delighted me with a sample of his
gourmet creations. He served me a Cedar Plank Caramelized Pecan Salmon
on a bed of Herbed Wild Rice with some delicious grilled asparagus cooked to
perfection. The dipping sauce served with the fresh, wild caught salmon was a
delicious blending of flavors. This was served with a side field green salad mix
topped with gorgonzola and homemade balsamic vinaigrette accompanied by
a basket of bread served with rosemary, garlic and thyme steeped high quality
olive oil. This meal was a smashing hit. The menu tantalizes you with great
sandwiches, including the Remarkable Reuben and the Grilled Blackened
Grouper Sandwich. The Greek Salad looks delicious as does The Galley Burger
and Gorgonzola Ribeye. Friday nights are All You Can Eat Catfish with Sheri’s
killer hushpuppies. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner, Thursday through
Sunday, and the new salad bar will be open from 9:00 AM – 2:00PM where
you can build your own Boar’s Head sandwich with all the fixings and dish up
a delicious salad with homemade dressings. Their convenient combo sandwich
meal allows you to get a half sandwich and half salad or buy some high quality
deli meats and cheeses to take back to the boat, cabin or campground! Sheri’s
food philosophy is that less is more! Sheri loves to use fewer ingredients, but

intimate dining experience. The Galley also has a new outside patio area with
stamped concrete tiles, ceiling fans and a beautiful lighted patio enclosure that
will shine while boaters enjoy the summer nights and the glorious food. They
will offer live music on Friday and Saturday night to complement the outside
dining experience. They have also teamed up with the Sergio brothers, local
entrepreneurs, who have come up with some awesome microbrewery beer called
Calfkiller. They will do some food parings and offer the Calfkiller beer on draft.
The Galley will also offer gourmet coffees, homemade pastries, fresh baked
breakfast muffins, scones, cinnamon rolls and homemade granola parfaits. They
will also offer iced coffees and will have divine smoothies - perfect on a summer
day. Cindy Carr will be baking up the breakfast foods and serving her “to-go”
clients. Sheri says that there is nothing else that she enjoys doing more than
cooking and serving friends. She feels very strongly that all that enter as guests

Tucked in a beautiful wooded setting, the Craft Center is the

The Appalachian Center for Craft, a satellite campus of Ten-

Something new is available in Cookeville, Tennessee (the heart of the
Upper Cumberland). Living the Dream is an elegant independent
living home for seniors. This is a dream come true for Ms. Wendy
Askins, Executive Director of the Upper Cumberland Development
District. For fifteen years, she had a vision and passion to build a
beautiful home for middle income people that needed a place to live
independently in a gracious environment. Ms. Askins has become no
stranger to serving people during her 30 plus year career in the Upper
Cumberland. She is a tireless, hard working people person with a

work she has done over the years. Through the Upper Cumberland
Development District, she has helped to obtain infrastructure for the
14 counties that she serves, providing low income housing, funding
for the relative caregiver program and services for seniors, historical
preservation and so much more. Living the Dream has been a dream
of fulfilling a need that has been obvious to Ms. Askins for years.
That dream has now come to fruition in late 2010 with the purchase
of a beautiful villa surrounded by 11 acres of lush pastures that were
auctioned earlier in the year. This beautiful stucco façade home allows
residents to age gracefully and live independently in a loving home
environment with country living.
Currently, there are two residents who love living in the non-
institutional style home which allows them the freedom to walk outside
and enjoy nature and the loving touches that Ms. Askins and her team
have created. Phase II will be completed in spring 2011 and will offer
20 units. 18 of those units will be one bedroom units with full ADA
approved bathrooms, bedrooms and a small sitting area with Dish
Network. Each unit will have its own heating and cooling controls to
customize comfort. There will also be 2 units designed for couples that
want a little more space and desire to live together. Living the Dream’s
country living allows for the ability to enjoy nature. The lovely
50’ x 100’ barn that houses horses, barn cats, dogs, baby goats and
soon, some donkeys for the residents to enjoy and care for if they enjoy
animals will add to the experience. Ms. Askins has put her heart and
soul into this project, working day and night to oversee the renovations.
She is so passionate about this project and has such a keen desire to
make sure every detail is as it should be that she has given up her own
home in Cookeville to live on-site. This has allowed her to be there
during every step of the project — making sure that her residents are
cared for. Her determined personality and professional loving team will
make this the best home for seniors. Ms. Askins credits God for letting
her know that this was the home and the time to get this project moving
forward as many baby boomers are or will be needing affordable
housing in the near future.

The planned gardens and vegetable gardens will be lovely for sitting
outside and enjoying the sights, smells, and sounds of the seasons.
Phase III will put an atrium over the gardens and a flowing fountain
that will make this sitting area relaxing for social interaction with
residents and guests that will visit Living the Dream. Living the Dream
will allow something for everyone to enjoy, whether nature, gardening,
socializing, walking, or just enjoying country living. Ms. Askins has
a twinkle in her eye when she talks about her childhood growing up
on their Clay County farm. It was some of the happiest times of her
life and where she developed her love of horses and nature. She is so
happy to be living in the country again and being able to offer this to

Annie’s Travels and Treasures
The Annual History Hayride at Edgar Evins
State Park is a must each fall. It is an excel-
lent opportunity to celebrate the season and
learn more about the fascinating history of the
region. The Friends of Edgar Evins State
Park (a volunteer organization whose purpose
is to support, improve, protect and preserve the
character and integrity of the park and enhance
visitor enjoyment) do a marvelous job recreat-
ing and interpreting the history and culture of
life back in earlier times. Brainchild of park
manager Carl Halfacre, this popular hayride is
celebrating their sixth year with dozens of vol-
unteers re-enacting what it was like in this neck
of the woods and what the people were like
that created the history of their time. The park
was named after James Edgar Evins, a native
of DeKalb County, whose family settled and
farmed in the Indian Creek area. Bright beyond
his years, Edgar was a professor by age eigh-
teen at the Pure Fountain College in Smithville,
a one room school. He was quite an enterpris-
ing and dapper character. In his early years, he
also traveled the area in his Henry Ford Model
T selling coffee door to door. His Daddy lost a
lot of money during the Great Depression. This
left a lasting impression on the young man, but
over the years the family earned it back. They
opened banks in Alexandria and Dowelltown
and started just about every business in DeKalb
County. Serving as a county commissioner,
Mr. Evins became involved in politics. From
there, he became Mayor of Smithville and
then was elected to the Tennessee State Senate
where he served two consecutive terms. Dur-
ing the 1940’s Senator Evins worked hard to
promote the creation of Center Hill Dam and
Reservoir. For his efforts, the park was named
after him in 1975. Today, it is one of the most
popular parks in the State of Tennessee. 6,000
acres of forest, indigenous plants and abundant
wildlife adjacent and bordering beautiful Cen-
ter Hill Lake make up this well-liked park - it is
a vacationer and outdoorsman’s paradise.
The haunted hayride was thoroughly enjoyed
by the Burckhard family. It was Grant and
Blake’s first hayride. Sitting on hay bales af-
ter enjoying a cup of hot chocolate, we learned
about statesman Edgar Evins. As we proceeded
onto the various stops, we learned about how

Ms. Betty Hale washed her family’s clothes
in a bucket with a washboard and listened to
the stories of their hardships. We also learned
how moonshine was made and about this un-
derground activity that kept many families fed.
We learned about Luke Allison Denney, an
elusive criminal, who dodged the law for many
years by dressing in fine suits and peddling
moonshine from his modern Model T car. We
listened to a teacher stand in front of her one
room schoolhouse and tell about her students
and we saw a local gentleman make canoes out
of the region’s fine wood. The Caney Fork was
an important waterway before Center Hill Lake
was impounded by the Corps of Engineers in
1948. It was heavily relied upon in the log-
ging industry, for transportation and for fish-
ing. One of Blake’s favorite stories was that
of the fox hunter. The gentleman shared and
demonstrated how they hunted fox and other
small animals like rabbit, turkey and pheasant.
One of the most colorful characters was a lady
dressed in black. She had countless husbands
that had all died of mysterious causes. Wail-
ing and grieving, this stately lady was all alone
trying to fend for herself. All of the volunteers
did an amazing job, dressing in period cloth-
ing and setting up working stations to tell their
story. Nature provided an excellent stage that
evening - the air was crisp and the moon was
bright. It was fascinating for all to listen to the
stories and go back in time to learn about life
back then. It was tough. However; the fami-
lies were all self sufficient and appreciated all
that they had. This is a perfect activity for the
family and a great day trip to enjoy the region.
Better yet, spend the weekend in the region and
savor the ambiance of fall. Learn a little about
history and enjoy the wonderful outdoors. Ed-
gar Evins State Park has camping facilities and
cabins. Sharp Lodge is just down the road of-
fering affordable, clean and lovely rooms with

sure to come early as this is a popular event at
the park. Although they have many hayrides,

If you’re looking for something other than your
ordinary adventure outing, try Cumberland
Caverns. They offer several ways to experi-
ence their underground wonderland. Tennes-
see’s largest show cave offers scenic walking
tours seven days a week all year round. For
those that would like to participate in some-
thing a little more daring, the caverns offer
underground adventures with five spelunking
tours. They have three daytime adventures and
two overnight adventures catering to various
levels of ability. Here is what Teddy Jones of

Adventure Trip #1 “Rocky Topper” is for
cavers 6 years old or older. It is more than just
a beginner’s caving trip though. This daytime
spelunking adventure is a trip through Rocky
Top’s rocky bottom. Tight squeezes, cave
crawls, ladders, and mud in famous “Bubble
Gum Alley” will make this an adventure you
will be able to brag about. Group size: 2 – 250/
Time: 2 hrs + clean up / Skill level: Moderate
 
Adventure Trip #2 “Higgenbotham’s Re-
venge” is the next step up and has an age limit
of 12 or older. Aaron Higgenbotham never
forgot his time in Cumberland Caverns. Nei-
ther will you! Step up to the challenge of this
more advanced daytime spelunking trip. Get
ready for real adventure as you climb ladders
(up to 20’ high); climb over and under rocks
and squish through muddy trails. This adven-
ture begins with a 1 1/2 mile mountain hike to
the historic entrance of Cumberland Caverns.
Group size: 2 – 250/ Time: 3 hrs + clean up /
Skill level: High
 
Adventure Trip #3 “What Waits Below” For
ages 6 or older, this scout favorite allows you
and your group a chance to sleep inside the
cave. If you want an overnight camping trip
that your group will talk about for years, find
out “What Waits Below.” You will enter the
cave in the afternoon, not to emerge until the
next morning. You will travel the “Rocky Top-
per” route and camp underground in the famous
“10-Acre” Room. Before you see the light of
day, your group will be treated to breakfast in
the cave. Group size: 10 - 250 / Time: 15 hrs +
clean up / Skill level: Moderate
 
Adventure Trip #4 “All Around the Moun-
tain” This is this next step in overnight adven-
tures. For ages 12 or older, we combine adven-
ture #3 with adventure #2 to equal fun for all!
We’ve combined the overnight experience of
“What Waits Below” with an early morning
“Higgenbotham’s Revenge” for one huge cav-
ing experience. Group size: 10 - 250 / Time: 18
hrs + clean up / Skill level: High

most hospitable couple) lovingly opened Sharp
Lodge a few years ago. They were looking for
something to do during their retirement. Roger
found a perfect piece of land on Hwy. 56, just
off of I-40, to build Sharp Lodge; where both
he and wife Treva could express their love of
people and allow them to spoil their guests with
comfortable new rooms, excellent cooking and
great conversation. The rooms are spacious
and luxuries with an upscale hotel feel in a ru-
ral setting only minutes from beautiful Center
Hill Lake. They have added a hot tub on the
spacious wooden deck for the guests to enjoy.
What sets Sharp Lodge apart from city hotels
is the down home hospitality that the Sharps
share with their guests. Treva loves to cook
and meals are available as a part of the pack-
age. As a guest at Sharp Lodge, you can enjoy
a home cooked breakfast, with dinner avail-
able for a small extra fee. Guests are served
the home cooked meals around the large oval
wooden table family style. Some of the dining
favorites include parmesan herb crusted chick-
en with hearty mashed potatoes, home grown
green beans and of course, sweet tea! Fried
chicken, lasagna and many other traditional
favorites are served from the Sharp kitchen

around the dining table. A lot of what they
serve comes from their large garden, where
they grow their heirloom favorites. For those
of you who follow the “Slow Foods Move-
ment” or buy organically grown produce, the
taste is better and it is so much healthier for our
bodies. This year, Roger hopes to have a pro-
duce stand in front of Sharp Lodge during har-
vest, so that he can share and sell some of his
bounty including tomatoes, all different types
of squash, eggplant, cucumbers, beans and so
much more. Treva also does a lot of canning
and some of her jellies, jams and preserves are
available at the lodge. One of our personal fa-
vorites is the peach preserves that we eat not
only on toast but use when grilling fish. It im-
parts a sweet taste that complements tilapia so
nicely. Make sure to take a few jars with you
when you leave, and savor the taste of these
homemade jams, jellies and preserves. Sharp
Lodge has 4 comfortable, new rooms that sleep
2-4, with king-size and double queen-size beds.
They also have several RV hook-ups available
on their property with more being added in the
next year. One of their favorite sayings is that
“You may come as a customer, but when you
leave you will have to decide whether you are
leaving as friends or family”. The big bear hug
that you get from Treva and Roger when you
depart makes it hard to leave! Come by and
say hello to the Sharps and buy a jar of jam
for your toast, PB&J sandwich or to use when
grilling some fish or chicken. Stay a while and
enjoy this great lodge so close to the heart of
Center Hill Lake. Now that Roger is retired, he
is planning on several new additions, including
some occasional live demonstrations featuring
his brother David who is an awesome wood
carver. He makes wall hangings and sculptures
out of wood with his chain saw, chisel, and
amazing talent. Treva also quilts and hopes to
have her quilts displayed in her quilt showroom
next to the lodge where she would love to have

Timberloft Restaurant and Lounge is an
awesome dining establishment owned by
Kevin and Donna Jones. Timberloft has
been under the Jones’ leadership for thirteen
years. Originally from Michigan, they moved
to Tennessee to follow Kevin’s job with
Cracker Barrel. Having been in the restaurant
business and specializing in steaks, seafood
and hospitality, they decided to break off on
their own and start the Timberloft. They knew
that they wanted an outdoorsy feel and loved
Lumberjacks. Today, Timberloft possesses a
real earthy, inviting, outdoorsy feel in a casual
dining atmosphere perfect for all occasions.
Kevin has been creating wonderful dishes for

many years, but several years ago he began
smoking and barbecuing their signature hickory
smoked prime rib, baby back Ribs, Boston
butts, Texas style brisket and chicken. Folks
come from all over to have this high quality,
slow cooked, upper 2/3 choice meats served
with their outstanding homemade gourmet
sides. There are no shortcuts with Kevin’s
smoking and cooking process. He takes great
pride in offering the finest meat. He enjoys
using some of the old-fashioned, traditional
seasonings while cooking which brings out the
natural flavors of the meat. Did I mention the
side items? They are divine. The meat melts
in your mouth and the prime rib that I/“Annie”
indulged in was fantastic. However, I like sides
and theirs were unique. Chef Leah created
these using her creativeness and professional
training to offer the best. How does homemade
Bistro Pasta Salad with penne pasta, capers,
sun dried tomatoes, feta and more sound? It
is a meal in itself. They also have homemade
macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, red potato
salad with an excellent tangy mayonnaise that
imparts such wonderful flavor. Last but not
least, one of my favorites (if this is possible)
is the homemade potato chips served with
dinner, or with a sandwich, hamburger or
as an appetizer. Delicious! The Timberloft
has daily and weekend specials, plus make
their chicken and shrimp Alfredo sauce from
scratch per order. OMG! Does this not sound
heavenly? I had a fantastic grilled salmon
salad served over field greens, feta cheese,
candied pecans and fruit. The delicious salad
dressing - balsamic vinaigrette, accented the
salad perfectly. Everything blended together
beautifully. It is rare to see a family work in
such harmony and still enjoy the business, as the
Jones have. Donna is so proud of her husband
Kevin and daughter Leah, who also followed
in the family footsteps. She has received her
culinary certificate which she earned at the
Le Cordon Bleu Institute in Atlanta, GA. Her
specialty is in pastries, which are showcased at
the Timberloft. Leah loves to serve decadent
desserts and likes to plate them up with her
special flair. Some of her specialties are her
special cakes, pies and scones. She always uses
the best and finest ingredients for her creations.

school. The Timberloft has a unique family
environment and the wait staff and team do
their utmost to create a memorable experience
with an excellent meal and making you feel
like part of the family. Timberloft also offers
a full bar with margaritas being one of their
specialties. Where can you go to find such
a variety, including huckleberry, pineapple
orange, ginger and your traditional margarita
with top shelf tequila. They have a very nice
outside patio with plenty of seating for the
summer crowd or those wanting to chill and
maybe play some corn hole. This is an upscale
casual place perfect for weekenders going to
Center Hill Lake, vacationers, day trippers or
those celebrating a special occasion. It seats
about 125 and is open for lunch from 11:00 AM
and closes during the week at 8:30 PM and on
the weekends at 10:00 PM. Sunday they are
open from 11:30 AM – 7:00 PM. It is best to
call ahead if you are not sure, or call ahead and
order some delicious barbecue to take it back
to your houseboat, cabin or campsite. You will
likely see Kevin out in the parking lot, cooking
his succulent meats on the Binford 10,000 twin
turbo smoker! If you do, make sure that you

some unique items by local artists, including
