Introduction:

READ2010 is a One Nation Reading Together Programme. It is a nationwide read-a-

thon that celebrates the importance of reading and helps children to discover the
joy of reading. Realizing the importance of reading among the students, the English
Language Panel together with English language Society have taken the initiative to
take part in READ2010 : One Nation Reading Together, organized by Scholastic
Malaysia, in partnership with the Ministry of Education of Malaysia.

Objectives:

This programmed is carried out due to the fact that all the knowledge in the world
can be found in books. Books expand a child’s vocabulary, inspire imagination, stir
the senses and spark a love of reading that can last a lifetime. Books are an
important learning platform that can change lives and liberate one from poverty. A
book is perhaps the most precious gift one can give to a child. Therefore,
READ2010: One Nation Reading Together is aimed at instilling the importance of
reading and inculcating a good reading habit.

Activities:

On 8th November 2010, SMKTS will organize a reading session either within each
class or all together at the assembly pavilion. The reading session will on for 2010
seconds (approximately 33.5 seconds). The students will carry out any of the
following activities:

a) Read-aloud sessions – students reading aloud together from a storybook

b) Shared/partnered reading – students can take turns reading within a

small group or with a partner

c) Independent reading – students can read on their own in one venue

*STUDENTS CAN BORROW BOOKS FROM THE LIBRARY OR BRING A BOOK OF THEIR
CHOICE FROM HOME
