General Guidelines to Write Argumentative, Expository and Factual Writing

Argumentative: Mobile phones do more harm than good. Do you agree?

Expository : How to keep one healthy?
Factual : The Importance of English

1) To make an introduction:
 Basically, there are a few ways to make an introduction:
a) Giving a general statement
b) Giving a definition
c) Giving a fact
d) Giving a saying
 For example:
Take the topic “Mobile phones do more harm than good. Do you agree?”
This is the way to write the introduction by giving a general statement:
In this era of science and technology, mobile phones have become necessary
requirements for many people. Wherever you go, you might find nine out of ten people
own a cell phone. It clearly shows that the people need the cell phones very much.
Since the cell phones are so important to the people, the only reason to explain it is
that the cell phones give a lot of benefits to the people. Therefore, in my opinion, I
strongly disagree that mobile phones do more harm than good.

This is the way to write the introduction by giving a definition:

A mobile phone is a wireless portable phone, which we can bring everywhere we
go. It is an incredible invention in this world of science and technology and also a sign
that shows how tremendous the human beings have changed the world. Nowadays,
mobile phones have become a crucial part in our lives. Hence, in my opinion, I totally
disagree that mobile phones do more harm than good.

Now, take the topic “How to keep one healthy?”

This is the way to write the introduction by giving a saying:
Like the Chinese saying goes, “you cannot buy health with money”. It rings true.
Health is something we cannot buy with money. Even if you have a lot of money, you
will not necessarily have good health. To keep you healthy, there are a lot of ways
without spending a penny of yours. Some methods are demonstrated below.

2) For the content:

 Generally, follow the techniques you have learnt, like 1 main idea per paragraph. Use
conjunctions and connectors to make your sentences flow well. For the factual essay,
ensure you really have wide knowledge about the topic you choose. For the
argumentative and expository essays, although you just express your opinions, you must
also have some knowledge about the issue. Please make sure your points make sense and
true. Or else, you will make you appear stupid. Only mature and convincing ideas will
arouse readers’ interest. And also impress the readers.
3) To write a conclusion:
 Basically, you just need to summarize everything you have mentioned. If necessary, you
can also add some words of inspiration or encouragement. You can start your conclusion
by using from the above-mentioned points, in short, as a conclusion, in a nutshell, in
summary, or laconically.
