Dear Students
Greetings and welcome to the Baja SAEINDIA fraternity.
As you embark upon the tumultuous journey of Baja, we welcome you and wish you the very best in
this memorable voyage. We respect your enthusiasm towards the event and agree to leave no stone
unturned to facilitate your participation. Here are some pointers that you may find useful to start
your Baja journey –
The Baja SAEINDIA registrations would be open for undergraduate engineering students
through April 10th – 30th, 2011 on Baja SAEINDIA website www.bajasaeindia.org. All the
teams are required to register with valid details. We would not be responsible for
cancellation of register or failure to register successfully on account of data inaccuracy.
The current registration shall be valid only upto Virtual Baja SAEINDIA
The fee for the Virtual Baja SAEINDIA is INR 15,000 and a participation limit of 25 students
per limit is to be adhered to.
The students are advised to refer to the previous year’s technical guidelines / report formats
while the latest guidelines are being updated and published on the website. The teams are
hereby required to refer to the website for regular updates. Teams are also suggested to
refer to the BAJA SAE India page on Facebook, for the latest buzz.
The Virtual Baja SAEINDIA is planned for August 11th – 12th, 2011 at Bengaluru with a
participation limit of 5 members per team accompanied by the faculty advisor. The Virtual
Baja Guidelines are provided herewith.
The fee is to be submitted through a Demand Draft payable at Indore, in favor of “BAJA
SAEINDIA”. The details on fee submission shall be provided to the participants in due course
of time. The registration fee is non – refundable.
The participants must possess a valid SAEINDIA Membership
All queries must be addressed to the Alumni Committee through Ms Taru Singhal,
Chairperson, Alumni Committee (taru.singhal@bajasaeindia.org). Any communication
routed to any other person shall not be deemed official. Queries may also be posted on the

Virtual BAJA SAEINDIA
The Virtual BAJA SAEINDIA is a pre‐qualifier to participation in the BAJA SAEINDIA event. The objectives of the
Virtual BAJA Event are as follows:
To acquaint the teams completely with the objectives of the BAJA SAEINDIA event.
The teams are required to acquaint themselves with the technical guidelines and limits for the design of
BAJA vehicle.
To design the complete CAD Model of the BAJA Vehicle. The design should be complete in all respects to
the extent of being considered ready‐for‐manufacture.
The teams would be judged on the following basis:
o Knowledge of rulebook
o Project Plan
o Design
Extent of completion of vehicle design
Design Methodology
Roll Cage Design
Materials Used
Compliance with rulebook
Finite Element Analysis
o Pre‐Processing (framing the parameters, constraints, loads, etc.)
o Post‐Processing (result analysis, changes in design, etc.)
Human Ergonomics
Suspension, Steering & Brakes
Chosen configuration (Disc, drum brakes, type of suspension, steering geometry, etc.)
Specifications (stopping distance, suspension travel, tie‐rod length, turning radius, caster,
camber, toe—in, toe‐out, braking effort, pedal force, etc.)
Suspension Design (wishbone, A‐arm, trailing arm design, wheel hub, knuckle design,
shock absorber, damper mounting, travel, etc.)
Brake Design (braking effort, braking circuit, brake mounting, etc.)
Steering Design (geometry, turning radius, power assistance etc.)
Powertrain
Engine (engine spec, mounting, emission control, intake, exhaust design, fuel system, fuel
lines, transmission coupling etc.)
Transmission (chosen configuration, engine coupling, max speed, traction, power,
acceleration, final drive to wheels, wheel size, joints, etc.)
Wheel Size (wheel mounting, joint with final drive, etc)
Body & Electricals
Weight (target)
Electrical System (safety, battery placement, kill switch, routing etc.)
Ergonomics
Aesthetics
Safety Equipment
o Innovation
o Design Validation Plan
o Vehicle Completion Date & Technical Inspection Date
The criteria would not be based on the early completion of the vehicle. Rather, it would be based
on the team’s analysis and work quantification towards completion of the vehicle manufacturing
and setting a target date based on such analysis.
Based on the performance in the Virtual BAJA, the teams would be selected for participation in the main
event. The selection would be purely on the basis of merit and ONLY ONE TEAM PER COLLEGE shall be allowed
on the basis of comparative merit.
Scoring
Knowledge of rulebook 50
Project Plan 50
Design 150
Vehicle Completion 25
Design Methodology 25
Roll Cage Design 25
Suspension, Steering & Brakes 25
Powertrain 25
Body & Electrical 25

Design Validation Plan 50
Total 350
The qualified teams would be required to submit the design report soon after the Virtual BAJA event. The
design presented during the event shall be considered as final and the team shall be considered to
proceed towards fabrication activity using the same design. Failing this, the teams shall be penalized /
disqualified if the fabricated vehicle does not exhibit correlation with the design report or if the teams fail
to fabricate within the stipulated timeframe.
Note: The Virtual BAJA is a pre‐qualifier, thus, no ranks or awards would be issued for the Virtual BAJA
event.
The detailed guidelines for Virtual BAJA are on the same lines as that of the BAJA SAEINDIA
Rulebook, with no exceptions. The rules and objectives may be revised in due time, the notification
and revised guidelines shall be made available on the BAJA website.
