Letter of Recommendation

It is my pleasure to recommend Alexander Miller for Ph.D. program in ___________ at _________.

I have known Alexander since 2015. Being his professor for four years and teaching him a number of classes starting
with calculus and later on more complex and specific disciplines, I watched his academic progress. Alexander showed
himself as a smart and hard-working student with strong analytical abilities, ambition and initiative. He distinguished
himself by unconventional approaches to solving problems thinking outside the box. That is why he was often given
the most difficult level of assignments. I, thus, was glad to work with him as his academic advisor during his senior
year.

While working on his thesis, Alexander revealed outstanding research potential. With profound academic
background and great motivation to work, he was good in applying theory to practice and general principles to
specific tasks. His special interests laid in the areas of numerical methods, mathematical and physical modeling,
finite element methods, and he achieved great success in these fields. In his thesis, Alexander made a profound
analysis of vector fields’ reflection and projecting for edge functions. His work received the highest evaluation of the
members of the guidance committee.

Everyone at the Department knows Alexander as a person with outstanding communication skills and strong
personality. He is polite, even-tempered and easy to approach. He always showed respect to his class-mates and
professors. He is also a good leader and reliable team worker.

In conclusion, I want to emphasize that Alexander was in the top 5% of the Department. He developed as a self-
sufficient and devoted student. I am confident he will rightly fit in the environment of the ___________ and will be
successful in his research and studies.

I strongly recommend Alexander for Ph.D. program at ___________.

To whom it may concern

I strongly recommend Mr. John Smith for the PhD program at the Lyrics department of your university. I’ve known
John since September 20XX, when he became a student of the Chair of Neurology, whose head I am, and started to
work with P. Jones, who was my student in 20XXs.

Mr. Smith has been actively involved in the life of our chair. He attended almost all the chair’s seminars and
participated actively in several discussions that occurred during those seminars.

Mr. Smith’s primary interests are physical lyrics and, more specifically, lyrical physics. During his fourth year at the
university, Mr. Smith showed that in some cases physics can be transformed to lyrics using lyrics. The idea of such a
construction was proposed by his advisor P. Jones; however, its realization involves a complicated analytical
technique developed by I. I and which also makes use of several advanced concepts in lyrical physics. Although this
method until recently has not lead to substantial physical-lyrical transformations, the technique itself may have
other applications and is interesting by its own means. Eventually, Mr. Smith has prepared a paper to be published in
“XX Poetry” named “Another Brick in the Wall”. This demonstrates Mr. Smith’s ability to make complicated research
and his capacity for work.

Mr. Smith also attended the third R. Peace Meeting in May 20XX. The meeting was held by the Pacifist Institute in
City, Country. The main language of the conference was English and Mr. Smith served as an interpreter on several
occasions; that shows his ability to communicate in English.

Concerning all these facts, I strongly recommend Mr. Smith for the PhD program at your university. I am absolutely
sure that he will be able to study at the Department of Lyrics and to successfully make research.

Best regards,

Professor S. Miller,

Full Member of the R. Academy of Sciences,

Head of the Chair of Neurology at M. University

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am pleased to write a letter of recommendation for YY. I have first met him 3 years ago, when he as a 3 rd -year
student attended my course on ZZ in N. University so I feel confident to be able to make a thorough evaluation.

During my course students had to deliver a series of presentations reviewing different topics that concern the YY and
its aspects in broad area of disciplines: from genetics and cell biology to microbiology and immunology. I was really
impressed by YY’s presentation as it stood out from the rest of the group. Along with excellent knowledge in diverse
disciplines of biology far above the scope of University program he demonstrated a very critical mind and
outstanding analytical skills. He would take an effort to carefully analyze data, question possible caveats and present
the main idea of the paper comprehensively and briefly. He also showed himself as an enthusiastic and energetic
speaker, being able to get listeners highly interested and lead active after-talk discussion.

Being impressed by his deep knowledge in various fields of biology, I put him forward to participate in the Olympiad
in Genetics in 2014. This competition was organized for the undergraduate students from leading R. Universities,
where they have to solve problems and demonstrate competence in various aspects of general and molecular
genetics as well as cellular and molecular biology. YY demonstrated remarkable persistence and motivation while
preparing for such serious challenge and as a result he greatly contributed to the overall achievement of the XXX
team in obtaining a 2nd prize in this Olympiad.

Taking into account all his achievements and academic performance, I have nominated him for a highly competitive
B. Fellowship, which is granted to the best three students in the department (the class of sixty). The fellowship was
later awarded to YY for the period of 2015-2016.

I believe that with his persistence and intellectual capacity, YY will achieve his goals. He is gifted person, diligent and
devoted to fulfill his dreams. I am convinced that he will realize his huge potential and inevitably succeed in his
future scientific career.

Therefore I have no hesitance to recommend YY for admission to University of North Mesopotamia Graduate School.
He will be a great credit to your program and, I believe, become a prominent scientist in future.

Yours,

Dear Sir/Madam!

It is my pleasure to give YY my support for his admission to University of _________. I have known YY for almost 4
years; without exaggeration, he is one of the best students I have ever had.

While attending my classes on ________ and later on ________ in X University, YY showed himself as a brilliant
student with extremely strong and broad educational background. He has remarkable talent to grasp the essence of
new principles and concepts, which distinguished him among majority of other students. During midterm exams YY
always displayed ingenuity and profound knowledge of cellular, molecular biology, immunology as well as state-of-
art biotechniques.

YY has excellent research abilities. He is also devoted and ambitious researcher. Upon finishing his third year at the
University he joined a research group of Dr. ZZ in the Institute of Cytology and Genetics. Being a curator of students
specialized in molecular biology during last two years at the University, I was able to track the progress of YY`s
investigations. It is a common practice in our Department when students make several intermediate presentations
of their current research work with final results obtained at the end of each semester. YY`s work always excelled
with highest attention to details and broad spectrum of used methods. His research received highest evaluations
from XXX professors.

Finally YY received XXX Diploma with Honours, awarded to a few University students with the best academic
performance and highest GPA.

I consider YY as one of the top 5% XXX students. I believe he has an outstanding potential and motivation to progress
as a scientist. Moreover, he is social, friendly and always ready to give a hand. His diligence and bright mind, the
ability to listen to others and to lead a discussion earned him a great deal of respect from his fellows and the
University staff.

Without doubt, YY will be a valuable addition in a graduate program at University of ________. I strongly
recommend him for admission.

Sincerely yours,

To Whom It May Concern:

It gives me great pleasure to support Kate Jones in her application to the Graduate School. I know Kate since
2013/2014 academic year when Kate was attending my lectures in A at the N. University. In the classroom, Kate
demonstrated solid background in biology, hard work and concentration. She is a curious and thoughtful student,
scrupulously studying every aspect of the material.

Our interaction, however, was not limited to the lectures. One of the optional coursework assignments for my class
was to perform a critical assessment of my recently published book "B and C of D". One must understand that a
successful completion of this assignment requires that the student thoroughly studies a large amount of text in order
to trace ambiguities, omissions, incomprehensible or insufficient explanations. It is a serious challenge, but Kate
handled it impeccably. She presented a critical review of several chapters and some of the questions raised may
have to be addressed in the next revision of the text. Needless to say, I was quite impressed with Kate's work. She
demonstrated excellent analytical skills and a very critical mind. Paired with concentration and aspiration for
success, these skills will make her an excellent researcher.

Among other Kate's achievements are two years of XX's Federal Scholarship. X's scholarship is a very prestigious and
highly competitive scholarship awarded annually to the most active and communicative students. Applicants from
different fields of science (economics, sociology, physics, biology and others) must demonstrate perfect student
records, participation in social and scientific activities, and above all, describe their field of study for non-experts in a
comprehensive and attractive way. Kate fulfilled all the necessary requirements, but it was her presentation on the
importance of biology and biological research for society and humanity that won the scholarship twice.

I have a very high opinion of Kate. If your department is looking for a knowledgeable, skillful and dedicated student,
yet open, social and with strong leadership I firmly recommend Kate.

Yours sincerely,

Prof. John Smith

To Whom It May Concern:

It gives me pleasure to write this letter of recommendation with respect to my student, Mr. Alex K. I know Alex for as
long as three years, which makes me completely confident to make a thorough evaluation and to recommend this
outstanding student for the Ph.D. program at your university.

I first met Alex when he joined the Biochemistry course on my department three years ago. During this course
students had to make presentations concerning different aspects of biochemistry, as well as to solve problems
involving working in the lab. Here Alex has shown himself as highly concerned student, having strong analytical
abilities and able to present and prove his ideas. I was highly impressed by his presentation on the problems of
protein degradation and the structure of proteasomes. It clearly stood out from the rest of the group. Alex has
clearly and intelligibly covered a plethora of problems and presented a view which has highly exceeded the textbook
data. Moreover, he has shown himself as an excellent speaker, able to incite listener’s interest. While solving the lab
problems, Alexl has proved his outstanding abilities to combine different approaches and to use unconventional
approaches to the assignment. It has helped him to gain success in every most difficult task. Needless to say, Alex
has excelled in this course, finishing in the top 5%.

While taking my course in Molecular Biology, Alex has proved his dedication and creativity. During my lectures I
enjoyed answering his questions, which were always step ahead of lecture, and much beyond the textbook. Alex has
shown especial interest to the problem of telomere biology and p53 signaling, showing his willingness to continue
his research in this area. His intention to choose this field was not based on pure interest, but also was supported by
the knowledge of considerable amount of literature and articles concerning these problems. Alex has finished my
course with the grade A, thus continuing to maintain his 5,0 out of 5,0 GPA.

I strongly recommend Mr. Alex K. for admission at your Graduate School. His concern in the subject, his excellent
knowledge in various areas of biology as well as his outstanding abilities in analytical thinking and comprehension
will certainly stand him in good stead. Without any doubts, Alex has all necessary preconditions to succeed in
graduate studies and to become a prominent scientist.

Everyone at the Department knows Alex as a sensitive, friendly and always ready to give a helping hand. Moreover,
he is reliable, responsible and has a flair for organization. Last year, Alex has won a prestigious P. fund fellowship,
which is awarded to the students who have shown both excellent academic record and outstanding leadership
abilities. His ability to present his point of view, his creativity and respect to interlocutor, as well as wide-range
knowledge, makes him a good person to collaborate with.

I consider Alex K. as one of the top 5% XX students. His motivation to be a scientist and his willingness to advance
along the ways of knowledge will help him to succeed in academic career. I have no doubts he will meet any
challenges and requirements which make up the code of practice at Your Graduate School. He knows how to work
hard and I am absolutely convinced he will do his best to complete your course of graduate studies. He has really
deserved my highest recommendation.

Recommendation letter

29 November 2016

To whom it may concern,

I know YY for more than 2 years. In September 2014 he joined my group in the Institute of Cytology and Genetics,
City, Country and started his graduation research project. At that time he investigated functional properties of
human FCRL6, a member of the recently extended FcR family that is expressed in CD8 T and NK cells. YY succeeded in
this complicated research due to his unique qualities.

YY showed himself as a motivated and diligent student with full dedication to his investigations. His self organization
and accuracy allowed him to lead several independent projects simultaneously and effectively. In a short period of
time YY acquired broadest range of methods used in our laboratory: from subcloning and manipulating nucleic acids
to operating eukaryotic cell cultures along with complicated protein analyses. He learns surprisingly quickly how to
handle with present-day equipment and facilities. He is a creative problem-solver with attention to details and he
always keeps up on novel techniques and advances in biology. His extraordinary ability to analyze problems is really
invaluable.

Beside his main work YY readily participated in other research projects in our laboratory. He works effectively in a
team and I believe he enjoys it. I should also note that YY is very pleasant and tactful person. It is easy to
communicate with him. He will be definitely good in a collaborative work.

Now as a research assistant and a graduate student in our laboratory YY has changed the object of his research to
Xenopus immunity. He studies paired KIR and FcR-related receptors that are thought to play role in tolerance
induction during amphibian metamorphosis. Results he obtained in the current as well as the previous research are
going to be published soon.

In summary, I regard YY as one of the best students I have supervised for the last 10 years. I have no doubts he will
succeed in any challenge Your Graduate School has to offer. He knows how to work hard and I am firmly convinced
that the Graduate School of Medical Sciences of Jurassic University will benefit from such a gifted and well-rounded
person. He has my highest recommendation.

Microbiology

Prof. John Smith, Dr. of Biology Science

Head of the department Molecular Biology

State Research Center A.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am pleased to recommend Kate Jones for the graduate program in Microbiology at (put the actual name here). It is
my firm conviction that she will excel as a graduate student, as she is one of the most talented and committed
undergraduates I have encountered in my tenure at N. University.

I first met Kate when she attended my class of A. In a quite diverse and strong class, Kate outstood as a very focused
and very committed student. I enjoyed answering Kate`s questions as they always were a step ahead of the lecture,
a bit beyond of the textbook, and a little deeper than the curriculum. No doubts, she took her time to study, learn,
understand and even question the material! Kate and a very few others were the part of that class that I used as the
gauge: Was the lecture interesting? Was the presentation clear? Needless to say, Kate excelled in this course,
finishing in the top 5%.

I take personal credit in that upon finishing my course, Kate chose Microbiology as her specialization. With the same
focus and commitment she proceeded with taking advanced level courses in this direction. Among them was my
course of B. I was pleased to see the same hard work and dedication, but I also took notice of another aspect of
Kate’s personality: her ability to listen and respond to other students in the class. It is my usual practice to encourage
students to try and answer the questions of other students, and Kate was always ready to offer an explanation or
lead a discussion. Her attention to the needs of others, together with broad knowledge within and beyond the
curriculum, earned her a great deal of respect from her fellow students. These are the features that will make her a
welcomed member in any class or group study; devoted and reliable teaching assistant.

I have no doubts that Kate will excel in her graduate studies. She has excellent background in biology (and,
specifically, A), she is determined about her goals, and knows how to work hard. She is absolutely ready to take on
and succeed in any challenge the graduate school has to offer.

Sincerely yours,

Prof. John Smith

Physics

Dear Sir or Madam,

It is a real pleasure for me to write this recommendation letter for John Smith to support him in his search for
graduate studies at your university. I am the Dean of the Department of Physics and Lyrics at XX University (XXU),
where Mr. Smith is going to receive his Bachelor’s degree. Although our university is not large in comparison to some
other schools, its unique location and strong ties to the K., one of the world’s largest scientific centers, make it a
“smithy” of M.’s intellectual elite. Our department is the largest at the university and has graduated a lot of
remarkable scientists. The history of the department starts from 2015; its founders were such distinguished
scientists as Alpha Alpher, Beta Beter, Delta Delter, and Georgij Gamov. Among our graduates, there is a Fields
Medal winner Zeta Zeter and among our faculty there was a Nobel Prize winner Theta Theter.

Mr. Smith has attended the Department of Physics and Lyrics since 2013 and is going to receive his Bachelor’s degree
in June 2018. Mr. Smith performed exceptionally well during all the time of his studies. Only 7 of 300 students
admitted to the department have managed to get the maximal GPA of 5.0; Mr. Smith is one of these students.
Moreover, at the state comprehensive examination held on the fourth year of study, he was one of the two students
that received maximal score. All these facts demonstrate that Mr. Smith has great study potential.

In addition to being successful in his studies, Mr. Smith has participated in many competitions. He took the first place
at the physical olympiade among XX universities on the first and the third year of study (the olympiade made no
distinction between students of different years) and was the first among the students of the university on the
second year. Mr. Smith has also participated in several lyrical contests; he was a member of our university’s team
that took the 55th place at the International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals held by ACM in 20XX in
City, Country.

Mr. Smith’s major field of study is geometry and topology. In 1914 he became a graduate student of Prof. M.Miller.
During his previous year of study, John has prepared a paper which is accepted for publication in “XX Poetry”.

I have no doubts that Smith’s physical abilities, his genuine interest in science, and scientific potential make him a
good candidate for PhD program at the Department of Lyrics. I strongly support John Smith in his intention to pursue
PhD degree at your Department. I am sure that the educational program of your University will help in further
promotion of his talents and development of him as a researcher.

If you have any further questions please feel free to call me at 9 (999) 999-99-99 or contact me via email
