And they watched Jesus, to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that
they might accuse him. 3 And he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come
here.” 4 And he said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do
harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. 5 And he looked around at
them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch
out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 6 The Pharisees
went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to
destroy him.
when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the
tombs a man with an unclean spirit. 3 He lived among the tombs. And no one
could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, 4 for he had often been bound
with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the
shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. 5 Night and day among
the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself
with stones. 6 And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him.
7
And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus,
Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” 8 For he
was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” 9 And Jesus asked
him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” 10
And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. 11 Now a great
herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, 12 and they begged him, saying,
“Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” 13 So he gave them permission. And the
unclean spirits came out, and entered the pigs, and the herd, numbering about two
thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and were drowned in the sea.
14
The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people
came to see what it was that had happened. 15 And they came to Jesus and saw the
demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and
in his right mind, and they were afraid. 16 And those who had seen it described to
them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. 17 And they
began to beg Jesus to depart from their region. 18 As he was getting into the boat,
the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with
him. 19 And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and
tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on
you.” 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much
Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.
The Transfiguration
2
And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led
them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3
and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach
them. 4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with
Jesus. 5 And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make
three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 For he did not
know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 And a cloud overshadowed them, and
a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” 8 And
suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.
9
And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one
what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 So they kept
the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean.
11
And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?” 12
And he said to them, “Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it
written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with
contempt? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever
they pleased, as it is written of him.”
Temptations to Sin
42
“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would
be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were
thrown into the sea. 43 And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for
you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable
fire. 45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life
lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell. 47 And if your eye causes you to
sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than
with two eyes to be thrown into hell, 48 ‘where their worm does not die and the
fire is not quenched.’ 49 For everyone will be salted with fire. 50 Salt is good, but if
the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it salty again? Have salt in
yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
Jesus Is Mocked
16
And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s
headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. 17 And they clothed
him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him.
18
And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they were
striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to
him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and
put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.
The Crucifixion
21
And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from
the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. 22 And they
brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). 23 And
they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. 24 And they
crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to
decide what each should take. 25 And it was the third hour when they crucified
him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the
Jews.” 27 And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his
left. 29 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying,
“Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save
yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 So also the chief priests with the
scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save
himself. 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that
we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.
Jesus Is Buried
42
And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the
day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the
Council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and
went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that
he should have already died. And summoning the centurion, he asked him
whether he was already dead. 45 And when he learned from the centurion that he
was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph. 46 And Joseph bought a linen shroud,
and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that
had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the
tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.
The Resurrection
16 ,
When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James
and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2 And very early
on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3 And
they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the
entrance of the tomb?” 4 And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled
back—it was very large. 5 And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting
on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. 6 And he said to
them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has
risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples
and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he
told you.” 8 And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and
astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were
afraid.
