Today, you’re going to learn:
 Confirming other person’s name
 Daily greetings
 How to talk like a Japanese

Review:

 Sumimasen, onamae wa?

You may want to ask, “sumimasen, onamae wa?”

Or the native Japanese might ask you “sumimasen, onamae wa?”
Then, how do you reply?

If you’re Mr. Smith,

Watashi wa Sumith desu. Or just say “Sumisu desu.”.
Then, they might confirm your name, especially the pronunciation,
“Sumisu-san desu ka?”
So here, what is “san” attached to your name?
This “san” means Mr, Mrs, Ms, those titles, showing respect. So this “san”
can be attached to anyone regardless of their gender.

But please remember, this “san” cannot be attached to your own name when,
you address yourself. For example, if you’re Mr. Smith, you cannot say,
“Watashi wa sumisu-san desu.” This is wrong, and moreover, sounds very
silly. So please be careful not to attach “san” to yourself. This is a very
common mistake, and I don’t want you to make this silly mistake, so please
bear in mind!

Here is a conversation between Ms Yamada and Mr. Eppenger

Y: Hajimemashite Yamada desu.

Doozo yoroshiku onegaishimasu.
E: Hajimemashite
Y: Sumimasen, onamae wa?
E: Eppenger desu.
Y: Eppenger-san desu ka?
E: Hai, Eppenger desu.
* Hai = Yes,

Mooichido “one more time, please”

Greeting
 Ohayoo gozai masu. おはようございます。
Good morning:

 Ohayoo おはよう。
Casual style, Good morning.

But now you’re talking to your teacher or boss, you say

Ohayoo gozaimasu.

So it depends whom you’re talking to.

 Kon nichi wa. こんにちは。

Hello/ good afternoon;

 Kon ban wa. こんばんは。

 Jaa, mata. じゃあ、また。
Good bye/ See you again.

 Dewa mata. では、また。

Good bye/ See you again. (formal)

Ok, this Jaa mata and Dewa mata is used to your colleagues, as you are
going to see them every day.
Jaa and Dewa means, “Well then”. And mata means Again.
Also, you can say Jaa mata, ashita. Here, Ashita means tomorrow.
So see you tomorrow. Jaa mata, ashita!

You might know another word Sayoonara (さようなら)。But actually Japanese

rarely use Sayoonara because this sounds a bit too polite.
And amongst Japanese, Sayoonara is used in a situation that is rather grave.
Such as breaking up or farewell.
However, Japanese might use Sayoonara to you as a foreigner because they
think you’ll know this word. If you check “good bye” in a dictionary, you’ll
find Sayoonara。
But please remember to say Jaa mata or Dewa mata to your friends or
colleagues, and to say to your boss, Dewa mata.

Ok, next is “how to speak Japanese like a Japanese”.

Here is some typical pronunciation by an English speaker.
For Good morning, OHayou gozAImasu!. The stress is on the second
syllable.
Actually Japanese sounds more flat than you think. Of course, intonation
does matter though. We don’t have stress on the second syllable. So please
remove the unnecessary accent, and make it flat.
Ohayoo- say, Ohayoo. And Gozaimasu say, gozaimasu.
