FIRE-FIGHTER/EMT

NATURE OF WORK IN THIS CLASS


Under supervision, participates in the work of the Fire Department performing
customary fire fighting and Emergency Medical Technician duties including: fire
suppression, maintenance of department equipment and property, participating in
training exercises and performing fire and life safety inspections and responding to
fire, hazardous materials and emergency medical calls.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK


• Responds to fire, hazardous material and emergency medical service calls.
• Drives and operates fire engines, lays and connects hose, directs fire streams, operates
fire extinguishers, uses forcible entry tools, enters burning buildings while using
breathing apparatus and wearing fire fighting turnout gear.
• Drives and operates fire department ambulances, provides emergency medical care,
coordinates scene safety and security with police.
• Often functions as the incident commander at emergency scenes.
• Performs hazardous tasks during emergencies that may require strenuous exertion under
conditions such as smoke, fire and confined spaces.
• Cleans, maintains and inspects fire department and EMS equipment and vehicles.
• Performs general maintenance work in the up-keep of the Fire Department property and
equipment.
• Ventilates burning buildings by opening windows and doors or by cutting holes in
building.
• Removes people from danger, rescues fire victims and administers emergency medical
aid to injured persons.
• Performs administrative and secretarial support.
• Participates in fire and life safety inspections insuring compliance with Alaska State Fire
Code. For example: checking fire exits, emergency lighting, smoke detectors and annual
certification of fire alarm and sprinkler systems.
• Performs other duties and related work as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
• Working knowledge of the standard practices, methods and tools employed in fire-
fighting.

• Working knowledge of fire behavior including the chemistry of fire, its spreading nature
and effective suppression agents.
• Working knowledge of department rules and regulations.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees,
supervisors and the general public.
• Ability to utilize or employ and variety of fire fighting techniques, and to operate and
effectively use various fire-fighting tools.
• Agility and sufficient physical strength to perform prolonged and arduous work under
adverse conditions.
• Mechanical aptitude preferred.
• Previous experience in structural fire-fighting or EMS is preferred.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS


• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Possession of a valid Alaska driver’s license.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Must posses a current EMT 1 or higher rating as certified by the State of Alaska. (May
be waived up to six months by the Fire Chief)
• Must be able to work varied 24 hour shifts.
• Must be in good health and able to pass the Fire Department Physical agility test.
• Must be a non-smoker.
• Must be able to work under extreme-stress conditions and carry out directions for
supervisor.
• Must pass criminal background check.
• Must be able to wear department self-contained breathing apparatus
and pass a mask-fit test.
