If your modem or outlets are in another room, please watch the

steps o n the CD any way, and then use this printe d guide to help
you recall what to do.

STEP 1
Apply firm upwards pressure on the wall phone to remove it from
its mounting. Then unplug the short lead from the wall (leave it
connec ted to the phone).
STEP 2
Plug the shor t lead marked ‘Line’ or ‘ Wall Socket’ of the special
f il t e r/s p li t t e r i n t o t h e w a l l s o c k e t , t h e n sli d e t h e f il t e r/s p li t t e r
down onto the phone mounting until it clicks into place.
STEP 3
Now plug the shor t lead from the phone into the ‘Local Phone’
s o c k e t i n t h e f r o n t o f t h e f i l t e r/s p l i t t e r. T h e n r e m o u n t t h e p h o n e
b y sli d i n g i t d o w n o n t o t h e f il t e r/s p li t t e r u n t il s e c u r e .

If your ADSL modem will be sharing the same outlet, you can plug
i t i n t o t h e s o c k e t o n t h e s i d e o f t h e f i l t e r / s p l i t t e r m a r k e d ‘A D S L
Modem’ when the self-install CD asks you to. O ther wise, just leave
t his s o c ke t e m p t y.
Note: Customers with cer tain home alarm systems such as a back-
t o - b a s e a l a r m w i l l n e e d t o i n s t a l l a ce n t r a l f i l t e r.
I N S TA L L I N G Y O U R C A B L E S P L I T T E R
If you already have a Fox tel® set-top unit connected to the cable
wall plate, you’ll need to install a cable splitter so that the set-top
unit and your new BigPond Broadband Cable Modem can share
access.
NOTE:
If you have a spare cable point, you can get away with not installing
a cable splitter by connecting your modem directly to the spare
cable point.
I f yo u d o n e e d to inst all a c a b le sp lit te r, st ar t by tur ning yo ur Fo x te l
set-top unit of f at the wall. And as you go through these steps, use
the spanner in your kit to make sure each connection is secure.

STEP 1
Find the coax cable that runs from the wall plate to the back of
your set-top unit. Unscrew it from the Foxtel set-top unit , using
the spanner in your BigPond Self-Install Kit if you need to.
STEP 2
Ta k e t h e c a b l e s p l i t t e r o u t o f y o u r S e l f - I n s t a l l K i t a n d s c r e w t h e
cable end you took of f your set-top unit onto the single connector
on the cable split ter (in other words , don’t connec t it to either of
the t wo connec tors that share the same side).
STEP 3
Now take one of the t wo coax cables from your Self-Install Kit .
Screw one end onto the back of your set-top unit and the other
e n d o n t o t h e c a b l e s p l i t t e r c o n n e c t o r m a r k e d ‘ o u t ’.
STEP 4
Ta k e t h e o t h e r w h i t e c o a x c a b l e f r o m y o u r k i t a n d c o n n e c t o n e e n d
t o t h e r e m a i n i n g c o n n e c t o r o n t h e c a b l e s p l i t t e r. F i n a l l y, s c r e w t h e
other end of this cable into the ‘Cable’ connector on the back of
your modem. Well done.
C H E C K I N G Y O U R G AT E WAY/ M O D E M
O nce you’ve been all the way through the self-install CD, your
internet connection should be up and running. Going to a website
is the best way to check. But the light indicators on your modem
c a n a ls o t e ll yo u t h a t e ve r y t hing is o k ay.
So for your peace of mind , you can check your Gateway/Modem

The internet is an amazing window to the world. So, while security
issues shouldn’t stop you enjoying the view, leaving your ‘window’
wide open isn’t the best course of ac tion.

an annoying email virus can cause you headaches and potentially
lead to excess usage charges unless you know how to get rid of it.

Online criminals and vandals have come up with several ways to
sp oil eve r yo n e e lse’s inte r n e t e x p e rie n ce . N o d o u b t t h ey ’ ll co m e

up with more. But we keep a sharp lookout and we offer plenty of

a d vice a n d se r vice s to h e lp yo u p ro te c t yo ur se l f. I t ’s just
im p o r t a nt t h a t yo u’re aw a re o f t h e r isk s . .

NON-GENUINE WEBSITES
Some criminals create authentic looking websites that appear to
offer legitimate goods and services. (This is sometimes known as
p hishing.) H owever, these sites are simply d esigne d to steal cre dit
card and email details, with no intention of providing what you
p ay f o r.

HOAX EMAILS
Web criminals have also been known to circulate emails that
a p p e a r t o co m e f r o m a l e g itim a t e co m p a ny. Using a v a r ie t y o f
(false) reasons, they will ask you to confirm your account details,
passwords and so on by either return email or via a web page.
It is highly unlikely that a company would ever need you to
confirm your confidential information – and certainly not over the
internet. These scams are usually a way of gathering confidential
information from unwary web users. BigPond never asks Members

to email us their personal details, or click through to a website to
confirm any of their account details.
HACKERS
Hackers try to use their computer skills and special software to
g a i n u n a u t h o r i s e d a c c e s s t o y o u r c o m p u t e r. I f t h e y d o g e t p a s t y o u r
security systems, they can do whatever they like. This can include
stealing files, personal information and financial records, gaining
access to your BigPond ser vice, or simply destroying your
c o m p u t e r. T h e e f f e c t s c a n b e d e v a s t a t i n g , t i m e - c o n s u m i n g a n d
expensive.
S PA M
Spam is simply unsolicited commercial electronic mail. Sending
spam is now illegal in many countries (including Australia), and is
sp e cif ic a ll y b a n n e d by m a ny m o re IS Ps (in clu ding B ig Po n d). I t ’s
annoying, time-consuming, of ten of fensive, and it wastes your
usage allowance.
Our recommendation is that you never reply to spam, even if the
message of fers you an opt-out link. Feedback simply lets the
spammer know that your address is valid, so they will continue
sending you their junk and selling your address to others.
WORMS AND OTHER VIRUSES
Computer viruses are sof tware applications that ‘infect’
computers. They can be written to per form almost any function
once they’ve gained access to your system. Worms are viruses that
sp re a d t h e m se l ve s a c r o ss a n e t w o r k – t h ey ’re ve r y co m m o n a s
email-borne viruses.
Once installed, a worm can steal addresses from your contacts
lists and spread itself to your friends’ and colleagues’ co mputers.
Along with the inconvenience and embarrassment, all those emails
can generate high levels of excess usage on your account.

A Tr o j a n i s a p i e c e o f s o f t w a r e t h a t u s u a l l y h i d e s w i t h i n a
legitimate looking application or utility to gain entry into your
c o m p u t e r s y s t e m . O n c e y o u i n s t a l l t h e h o s t s o f t w a r e , t h e Tr o j a n
c a n l a u n c h i t s e l f a n d g o t o w o r k . Tr o j a n s m i g h t d o a n y o f t h e t h i n g s
that a human hacker would – or they may simply provide a hacker
with a means of easy access.
S p y w a r e i s s i m i l a r t o a Tr o j a n , a l t h o u g h u s u a l l y l e s s d a m a g i n g . I t
will install itself on your system and send reports on your
computer activity back to its host.
Either kind of infection has the potential to generate huge levels
of excess usage on your BigPond account, either by uploading your
data to the thieves or by using your computer as a ser ver for
o ng o ing ill e ga l a c ti v it y.

plug and wire is in the right place, the right way round, and is

WHICH SHOULD I USE?
For each computer you wish to connect you can choose
to connect via either ethernet or USB cables but not both.
Ethernet is recommended for optimum per formance. This can be
important if you have subscribed to one of the ‘superfast’
BigPo n d B ro a db an d ADSL , C a b le o r Ve l o cit y p lans .
USB connections are effectively ‘switched off ’ when your
computer goes into any power saving or sleep mode. When it
‘wakes up’ again, your computer needs to find and re-star t the
software that drives its USB modem connection. This can slow
d ow n the co mp uter’s restar t pro cess , and means the m o d e m has
to reconnect to the internet.

On the other hand, an ethernet connection is generally treated
as ‘esse ntial ’ by yo ur co mputer’s o p er ating syste m , so it s p ower
supply is typically preserved in low power modes. So you can
enjoy faster computing and a truer ‘always on’ internet ser vice.

Line Sync (Synchronisation) establishes that your phone line is
connected to the ADSL equipment back at your local exchange. If
your modem can’t achieve Line Sync , you won’t be able to connec t
to the internet.
Most modems indicate Line Sync with a light marked SYNC , ADSL ,
WAN , o r LI N K . A n d , a s a r u l e , a f l a shing lig h t in dic a t e s a c u r r e n t
attempt to achieve sync, while a solid light indicates a successful
Line Sync .
N O T E T H AT:

so be patient.

modem, you can restore its factory default settings and start
again . H e re’s h ow.
STEP 1
Make sure the modem is on and wait until the power light shows
steady green.
STEP 2
Then insert a pointed object (like a ballpoint pen or a straightened
p a p e r c l i p ) i n t o t h e h o l e a t t h e b a c k o f t h e m o d e m l a b e l e d ‘ r e s e t ’.
Press and hold the reset button until the power light turns red,
then release.
STEP 3
The modem will reboot itself and be reset to its factory defaults
when it comes back online.

ADSL
ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line – a broadband

Bytes are a common unit of computer data measurement, although
t h e b a s e u n i t i s a c t u a l l y a ‘ b i t ’. E a c h ‘ b i t ’ ( s h o r t f o r ‘ B i n a r y D i g i t ’ )
is literally a 1 or a 0 in the binary code that makes computing
possible. And there are 8 bits in a byte. A kilobyte is generally
taken to be 1,000 bytes and a megabyte is generally taken to be a
million bytes. (Because of the binary code, all computing is based

BROADBAND

into a text field, your computer uploads a small amount of data.
