ADAPTIVE SIGNAL PROCESSING

1. Answer the following : ( 5 Marks)

a) What are the advantages of RLS algorithm over the LMS algorithm?
b) Explain adaptive noise cancellation by means of an adaptive filter.
c) Describe the Adaptive Linear Combiner with neat sketches. Explain the terms
Mean Square Error and Performance Function.
d) Prove the Properties of Eigen values and Eigen vectors of input correlation
matrix.
e) Discuss the geometrical significance of Eigen values and Eigen vectors.
f) Prove that the error signal is uncorrelated with the input signal to the weights.
g) A single weight performance surface has the parameters λ = 0.1, ξmin= 0 and
w*=2. Write an expression for this performance surface.
h) What is the ratio of adaptation time of the LMS/Newton Algorithm to that of the
LMS algorithm? When this ratio is equal to 1?
i) Define an Adaptive System. What is open loop and closed loop adaptation?
j) Find the eigen values of R =

method.

f) Discuss the effect of gradient noise on weight vector solution.
Prove that in LMS algorithm Maladjustment equals number of weights divided by
settling time, when eigenvalues are equal. (Hint: See at page 112)
g) Consider adaptive signal cancelling situation in the diagram below:
i) Write an expression for performance surface
ii) Determine the range for adaptative gain constant(Hint: see example at
page 103)
h) Consider the system shown here which is an adaptive linear combiner with
single weight. Suppose that switch S is open and E[xk2]=1, E[xkxk-1]=0.5, E[dk2]=4,
E[dk xk]=-1 and E[dk xk-1]= 1.Derive an expression for performance function.(
Hint: See example at page 22, Widrow, Chap-2)

i) Consider an adaptive linear combiner in the form shown in fig with two weights.
The signal x and d have the following properties: E[x0k2]=2, E[x1k2]=3,
E[x0kx1k]=1, E[x0k dk]=0.5, E[x1k dk]=4 and E[dk2]=36.

i) Write an expression for MSE.


ii) What is the optimal weight vector, W*
iii) What is minimum MSE?
iv) Find the eigen values and eigen vectors.

j) Show that the eigenvalues of the input correlation matrix R give the second
derivative of the error surface ξ with respect to the principle axes of ξ. (( Hint:

k) Discuss Adaptive Modelling of a multipath communication channel.
l) Describe the Inverse adaptive modelling in detail with suitable diagrams.
m) Explain the Convergence analysis of RLS Algorithm. (Hint: Chapter-9, Simon
Haykin).
n) Write an essay on Adaptive lattice Structure.
