Departures
This is the usual sequence of activities when you get to the airport.
First you go to the check-in desk in the terminal building (= where
passengers arrive and depart) where they weigh your luggage. Usually you
are permitted 20 kilos, but if your bags weigh more, you may have to pay
excess baggage (= you pay extra). The airline representative checks your
ticket and gives you a boarding card for the plane with your seat number on
it. Then you go through passport control where an official checks [NOT
controls| your passport, and into the departure lounge. Here, you can also
buy things in the duty-free, e.g. perfume, alcohol and cigarettes. About half
an hour or forty minutes before take-off, you are told to go to a gate number,
e.g. gate 14, where you wait before you get on the plane. When you board (=
get on) the plane, you find your seat. If you have hand luggage, you can put
it under your seat or in the overhead locker above your seat.
Complete the words or phrases below using words from the box.

Arrival
When the plane lands (= arrives on the ground), you have to wait for it to
stop. When the doors are open, you get off the plane and walk through the
terminal building and go to the baggage reclaim where you collect your
luggage. You then pass through customs (green = nothing to declare; red =
goods to declare; blue = European Union citizens). If you are lucky, you can
then get a bus, taxi or train to the centre of town without waiting too long.
You can also hire a car (= rent a car) at most airports.
Note: In British English you normally hire something for a short period, e.g.
hire a room for a party, and rent something for a long period, e.g. a flat; for a
car, you can use both words.

Step 1: _____________________
While important business decisions are typically made by founders and top
managers, there’s no such thing as "too many people" with a SWOT
analysis. You may find that you’ll get better strategy and decisions that come
out of the analysis if you include your employees, customers or even people
who don’t fully understand your business in the process.
Step 2: _____________________
Once you’ve assembled your team, welcome a brainstorming session with
everyone involved. You can either list strengths, weaknesses, opportunities,
and threats together (better for small teams) or ask participants to create lists
individually (better for bigger teams).
Step 3: ______________________
Once you’ve got everyone’s ideas, it’s time to start filling in gaps where
additional explanation is needed. This is an opportunity for you and your
team to ask questions that will determine how important each item on the list
is. Ask everyone in the group to choose their top three items for each
category.
Step 4: ______________
Start with the lists from your brainstorming session. Now work on cutting
down those lists, considering how powerful a factor is and how likely a
factor is to happen.
Step 5: ______________
For each of the items on your final list, create a plan how to use the
advantages and opportunities, and to deal with the weaknesses and threats.
These initial strategies don’t need to be complex, although you may choose
to expand them later. For now, just create a broad plan of action.
77
11. Fill in the gaps and do the SWOT analysis.
1. __________ – Apple has presented hit products after hit products and
that’s been the major strength of Apple. Initially it came with the MacBook,
then the iPod, the Iphone, the Ipad, the Iwatch. In short, Apple has covered
almost everything that an individual “desires”.
2. ___________ – As per Wikipedia, Apple is the leading technology
company in the world. It is also the second largest smart phone
manufacturer. Apple is far ahead in the leadership game.
3. __________ – Being a leading company since 1980’s Apple has a major
market share and the consumer expectation is going through the roof. People
expect great things from Apple year after year and keeping these expectation
levels high is not easy for anyone.
4.___________ – Naturally, being in the leadership position means that your
brand costs a lot. The brand Apple is the number 1 among all the companies
in the world as of 2016. The cost of brand in 2015 was 118.9 billion dollars!
5. ___________ – A key problem in Apple as a company is that many of its
products do not work with third-party software / accessories. So overall,
when you buy a product of Apple, you have to continue with Apple only.
That makes a huge impact on consumer decision making.
6. ____________ – In the technology industry, the one brand we can expect
to improve technology to its best is Apple. We can expect even more
advanced MacBook’s, Iphones, Ipads and Iwatches in the coming years.
7. __________ – MacBook is obviously the best there is. But so is Dell, and
so is Sony and so is Lenovo. The competition is increasing in the laptop
segments. Dell has introduced some beautiful models over the years
including the Alienware model. So, although Apple as a brand is loved by
everyone, MacBook is facing tough competition from other brands as well.
8. _________ – Naturally, Apple wanted to find out some new products
which Apple could launch. Apple is now concentrating on Apple Car which
is supposed to be launched in 2020.
78
9. __________ – The best part of Apple, and the reason for its fantastic
success is its design as well as the technology it uses. Apple has always been
elegant in its product design.
10. _________ – Apple is a growing company in a growing market. Any
company which is growing needs a larger market and Apple is slowly
building its customer base in the developing countries.
11. __________– Apple has 470 of its own stores across 17 countries.
Besides these stores, it sells through trade partners and online channels.
Thus, the concentration of Apple on its sales and service distribution is
fantastic.
12. ___________– One of the key factors and the leader of Apple is also a
loved person in the technology Industry. He is an inspiration to all marketers
in the way that he led his own people and the way he carried his life and the
brand Apple along with him. Since 2011, his departure from this world,
Apple has been led by Tim Cook who is also showing his genius in growing
Apple as a company.
13. _________ – Two products which can increase the company’s revenue
are the Iwatch and Apple TV, both of which are aimed at the future, for
when the digital presence increases. Apple Iwatch already has a 50% market
share of Smart watches in US.
14. __________ – Other brands can be very successful in the smartphone
market. Android currently has 47.5% of the market share while Iphone is at
42% market share. Android is being used by Samsung, HTC, Lenovo and
practically everyone who wants to enter the smart phone market.
15. _________ – Apple always designs its products with a focus on
consumers while keeping their mind in the future. They always try to
imagine the things which even the consumer has not imagined yet. As per
Steve Jobs “if you ask the consumer what he wants, by the time you give
him the same thing, he will want something else”. This ideology is the
reason of success for Apple.
16._________– Apple has only 7-8 products in its portfolio in comparison to
the various products that its closest competitors Microsoft and Google have.
So the dependency of Apple on each of its products is very high. If one
product fails, then that is a 10% loss to Apple.

A key factor in H&M’s success has been its

employs/employees have good working conditions, especially in poorer
countries, otherwise it risks negative media coverage and
22
damage/damages to its brand.

Dear Roberta,
How are you? It's the Fourth of July, and it's raining really hard. They say it
could clear up later. Then again, it could not. You never know with the
weather.
Do you remember my brother, Ed? He says hi. He might has dinner with me
on Saturday night. We may go to a new Mexican restaurant that opened in
the mall.
I definitely might take some vacation next month. Perhaps we could do
something together. It might not be fun to do some traveling. What do you

Let me know.
Love, Linda

8. Read the article about small talk. Are sentences 1-8 which follow right
or wrong? If there is no information in the text to answer ‘Right’ or
‘Wrong’, choose ‘Doesn’t say’.
Knowing that many other people find making small talk difficult
should give you the confidence to start a conversation. A greeting or casual
comment is a good way to do this. Once the conversation has begun,
remember that small talk is called small talk for a reason. Don’t give too
many details about a topic or tell stories that are too long. Don’t introduce
topics to the conversation which are negative or difficult, and certainly don’t
reveal your deepest personal thoughts and secrets. Instead, to begin with,
stick to safe topics such as the weather and the town or city you are in.
Even if you don’t feel confident, try to look as if you are as this will
make others feel more comfortable. Be the first to smile when you are
introduced to someone and always shake hands. Try to make the person you
are talking to feel good about themselves. Show interest in what they are
saying by turning your body towards the person, nodding your head and
saying ‘Uh-huh’, ‘Yes’, or ‘Oh really?’ Make and keep eye contact, and
don’t look round the room for someone more interesting to talk to. Many of
249
the best conversationalists are actually good listeners, so try to listen more
than you talk. Preparing a few questions in advance of the event is a good
idea. It’s better to ask open-ended questions than yes/no questions, as this
will encourage people to give longer and fuller answers.
Finally, don’t forget that small talk serves a particular social function
and can never replace true conversation. For every ten small talk
conversations you have, one will probably lead to a conversation which is
genuinely interesting and fruitful. Small talk really can open doors to deeper
relationships and connections – both personal and professional.
1 If you can speak in a meeting easily you will have no problem making
small talk.
