My sculpture is to be situated in the courtyard of Arkwright’s

mill in Cromford. The buiding was originally a cotton mill but
has it now contains shops, a cafe and a gallery space. Although
the mill gets busy with passing walkers and local workers using
the cafe for lunch the large central courtyard is frequently empty.
The courtyard would have originally housed the mills
water wheel and the water which would have driven the
machines still flows through the center. It is a great space and
it is from here that the mill buildings can best be appreciated.

My intention was to create a sculpture that would

draw visitors into the courtyard. The sculpture
needed to be big enough to compete with the
large space and imposing buildings. I studied the
space from all angles so that I could decide where
to best locate the sculpture

Sir Richard Arkwright

built many mills,
among them is
Massen mill, ten miles
down the road from
Cromford. Massen is
still a working cotton
mill, that is run as a
museum. It is from
the operating
machines in this
museum that I took
inspiration for my
sculpture. What
struck me most
about the machinery
was the hypnotic
quality of the
repetetive elements
in motion. It was
because of this that I
decided to make a
kinetic sculpture.

I wanted to use repetetive elements in my work to try and capture the

feel of the machinery. I took elements of the machines and the way
they operate and developed ideas based on the motion they created.

My original intention was to make

a sculpture that was driven by
water to draw a parralel with the way
the original mill machines were
powered and to draw visitors attention
to the fact that water is still
an effective source of power.

These sculptures were intended to

catch the sunlight as the parts moved
up and capture the viewers attention
with there slow constant movement.

Due to the speed of the flow of the water

a Cromford it proved difficult for me to
use this as a driving force, howver
I still wanted to incorporate the
water into my work. I considered
various ways of lifting the water, above
is the archimedes screw and
to the left are various lever and pully sys-
tems. I then played with water in the bath
with found objects and noted what hap-
pened, also to the left are ideas for
what to do with falling water.

water, it was intended to
be placed next to
the water so that
the dangling elements
dipped into it, disturbing
the surface and
creating ripples and drips.
Unfortunatly this wan’t
possible as the only place
it would fit next to the
water would have blocked
acess., I think however
that the sculpture is
equally sucessfull without
the water. The sculpture
encourages people to
interact with it as I
had hoped it would.
