CSI receives
$210K grant
for research
The College of Staten Island
was awarded a $210,000 grant
from the National Science Foun-
dation’s Research Instrumenta-
tion program to acquire state-of
the-art signal generation and de-
tection instruments. These in-
struments will be used for a plat-
form that will enable cutting-edge
research and multidisciplinary
engineering training on advanced
communication technologies.
The principal investigator of
the grant was Xin Jiang, associ-
ate professor of engineering sci-
ence and physics at CSI. Jiang re-
ceived her PhD in electronics,
physics and opto-electronics in
1995 from Tsinghua University,
Beijing, China, where she re-
ceived two national awards for ex-
cellent research on optical ampli-
fiers and multiple-wavelength op-
tical communications. Prior to
joining CSI, Jiang has worked in
R & D and engineering at several
high-tech companies. Since com-

on building a first-class modern
experimental laboratory on opti-
