AP Physics 2009-2010 Summer Assignment

All students accepted into and expecting to be enrolled in AP Physics at San Marino High School should
complete the following assignments to be turned in on the first day of school Tuesday, August 25, 2009
Students who do not complete both assignments or do not complete them adequately can be dropped
from AP Physics. Do your teacher a favor and have your work organized and easy to follow (ie: don't try to fit
too much on a page.)

Part 1: Mechanics

Go to: http://www.physicsclassroom.com/Class
Read the chapter: "1-D Kinematics" all lessons (1-6)
Use the questions at the end of each page to check your understanding before moving on to the next
section
Read the chapter: "Vectors - Motion and Forces in Two Dimensions" lessons 1-2
Use the questions at the end of each page to check your understanding before moving on to the next
section
Go to: http://www.learner.org/resources/series42.html
Watch Program: "5. Vectors"

Go to: http://apcentral.collegeboard.com
Click: "AP Courses and Exams"  "Course Home Pages"
Click: "Physics B"
Click: "Learning Objectives for AP Physics" to download the course objectives in pdf

You just learned the material for Objectives IA1 and IA2
For all those objectives with a check mark in the B column show that you understand what the objective
indicates by creating a problem and solving it or explaining it in your own words.

Part 2: Geometric Optics

Read from your textbook Chapter 23: Geometric Optics. You may omit section 23-10
Physics: Principles and Applications, 6th Edition, Douglas C Giancoli, Prentice Hall, 2005 ISBN 0-13-184661-2

Go to: http://www.learner.org/resources/series42.html
Watch Program: "40. Optics"

You just learned the material for Objectives 4C1, 4C2, and 4C3. For each objective, show that you understand
what it means by creating a problem and solving it, or explaining it in your own words.

Draw ray trace diagrams for these conditions. Calculate what di and hi should be using the equations, and
compare these values to the values you measure in your ray trace (the leses should be very accurate, the mirrors
might not be):
1) converging mirror, f=5cm, do=9cm, ho=1.5cm
2) converging mirror, f= 9cm, do=6cm, ho=1.5cm
3) diverging mirror, f=-4cm, do=5cm, ho=1.5cm
4) converging lens, f=5cm, do=8cm, ho=1.5cm
5) diverging lens, f=-7cm, do=11cm, ho=3cm

Answer these questions:

6. The critical angle for a transparent material in air is 30°. The index of refraction of the material is most nearly
(A) 0.33 (B) 0.50 (C) 1.0 (D) 1.5 (E) 2.0

7. An object is placed as shown. The center of curvature C and the focal point F of the reflecting
surface are marked. As compared with the object, the image formed is
(A) erect and larger (B) erect and the same size (C) erect and smaller
(D) inverted and larger (E) inverted and smaller

8. When one uses a magnifying glass to read fine print, one uses a
(A) converging lens to produce a virtual image of the print (D) diverging lens to produce a real image of the print
(B) converging lens to produce a real image of the print (E) diverging lens to produce a virtual image of the print
(C) mirror to produce a virtual image of the print

9. The image of the arrow is larger than the arrow itself in which
of the following cases?

(A) I only (B) II only (C) I and III only

(D) II and III only (E) I, II and III

10. Light leaves a source at X and travels to Y along the path shown. Which of the following statements is correct?
(A) The index of refraction is the same for the two media.
(B) Light travels faster in medium 2 than in medium 1.
(C) Snell's law breaks down at the interface.
(D) Light would arrive at Y in less time by taking a straight line path from X to Y than it
does taking the path shown above.
(E) Light leaving a source at Y and traveling to X would follow the same path shown
above, but in reverse.

*There will be a test on this material (Part 2) within the first week of school.
