TITLE:

Adaptation of Hindu Epic as animation movies and

Interpretative analysis of Ramayana and Hanuman.

Introduction-

Emergence of animation, scope and its significance.

Much of Asia's animation production since the 1960s has been tied to foreign interests
attracted by stable and inexpensive labor supplies. For nearly forty years, western
studios have established and maintained production facilities, first in Japan, then in
South Korea and Taiwan, and now also in the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore,
Vietnam, Thailand, India, Indonesia, and China. The economics of the industry made it
feasible for Asia to feed the cartoon world, to the extent that today, about 90% of all
American television animation is produced in Asia.

The usual procedure is for pre-production (preparing the script, storyboard, and
exposure sheets) to be done in the United States or other headquarter countries, after
which, the package is sent to Asia for production (drawing cells, colorings by hand,
inking, painting, and camera work). The work is sent back to the U.S. or other
headquarter country for post-production (film editing, colour timing, and sound).
Offshore animation has led to the creating and nurturing of a local industry, as an
infrastructure is built up, equipment is put into place, and skills are transferred.

An emerging trend in the Asian animation industry is the increasing focus

towards production of local animation content for television as well as production of
animated movies. An increasing number of Asian animation studios are giving
importance to owning and protecting animation content by investing in intellectual
property protection mechanisms.

India is emerging as an outsourcing hub for animation and visual effects with large
number of international media companies entering into joint ventures with animation
studios in India. Animation market in India is estimated to be worth USD 460 millions
in 2008 and is expected to reach USD 1,192 millions by 2012. Animation sector
comprises of education, multimedia or web design, entertainment and custom content
development.
Indian animation industry including market size, growth and key segments. Analysis of
drivers reveals that growing demand for animated content in the domestic market, cost
arbitrage opportunity in India, improving animation education and increasing character
licensing business have helped growth of this sector in India. The key challenges
identified include high set-up and production cost, talent shortage and lack of
protection of intellectual property. The future trends identified include increasing
animation application in other sectors, domestic animation movies earning revenues
through international releases and increase in investments and realizations for
animated movies in India.

Animation rumble up the world and it is becoming essence of the time. The
boom in the arena of animation has affected all the segments in the genre i.e.
entertainment, game, advertising, film industry, websites etc.
The art of animation, a creative field dominated by the West, now has India
running as one of the most serious contenders. Cartoons are illustrations of a single
diagram with varied meanings, while an animation is a rapid display of 2-D or 3-D
images to create an illusion of motion.
Animation in India has came a long way with Indian animations catering to the
needs of several private and public sectors and indigenously produced animated films
constituting the bulk.

Various T.V programs, advertisements or commercials and computer games

are demanding a huge quantity of manpower from the Indian market. Animation is also
being used in titling films, creating special effects or in web entertainment programs.
Whether it is TV soap, news media or film industry, animation is becoming very
popular because practically every TV channel wants to present its stories in animated
format. Scope in entertainment sector is increasing. Experts feel that animation can
help in making difficult content easier to understand, particularly if the subject matter is
dynamic. Animation is superior to the static graphics in depicting dynamic content
because animation can portray the dynamic explicitly. That is why, film makers are
shifting towards this medium.
Animation is an art of moving objects on screen as if they are living. Animated movies
are created by the sequences of drawings or computer graphics and processed at a
high speed so that they appear as moving.

In films, animation graphics are used to stimulate real events in order to make the
visuals eye-catching, interesting and entertaining to the viewers by adding
up special effects and other animation techniques.

For instance, when 'hero' appears as riding a horse at an amazing speed, actually his
speed is much lower than what we see on our screen. Or a vehicle which is in a
stand-still position is shown as moving at a high speed. In fact behind these
wonderful feats is none other than animation that makes all this possible.

Hindu Epics (Ramayana and Hanuman)

Ramayana and Hanuman as Hindu Epics is one of the most popular religions followed by
the largest percentage of Indian population, it will remain incomplete without discussing its
two epics, namely, Ramayana and Hanuman. These two epics are the most sacred
scriptures of Hindus.

Ramayana is an ancient Sanskrit epic and it is the life history of Lord Rama,
an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Set up in Northern India, it is the story of birth, growing up,
youth and achievements of Rama and his four brothers. Lord Rama's winning of his bride
Sita, the daughter of Janak, after ordaining a severe test comes as point of sheer joy in the
text. All his brothers get married to the cousins of Sita.

The happiness of Rama's marriage followed by his father's decision to make him the
king of the mighty empire of Ayodhaya turns sour with the desires of Rama's step
mother, Kaikaeyi. His Rajtilak is exchanged by an exile for 14 years. It is during this
period that Rama loses his consort to Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, and then
gets her back after a fierce fight with Ravana.

Portrayed as a man of honor, popularly referred to as 'Maryada Purushottam', Rama

is shown as an obedient son, a dutiful brother, a judicial king and a loving son in the
course of the book. He does not hesitate even in expelling his wife out of his house at
a mere mention of her character by a washer man.

The astute devotion and unshakeable faith of Sita in her husband is also exemplary.
Lakshmana and Bharata, the two brothers of Rama, also present rare examples of
brotherly affection. Friendship is also presented in a novel way in these texts by
portraying the friendship of Sugreeva, the monkey king, and Lord Rama.

It is Sugreeva who supports Rama to get Sita back by offering him all his force and
subjects. Rama's victory over Ravana is the most glorious and significant moment of
the text that signifies the victory of good over evil.
Hanuman is an important character in both of the major Hindu epics,
the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. However, it is his role in the former for which
he is best known.

Hanuman, in Sanskrit “having a large jaw”, the mighty ape that aided Lord Rama in his
expedition against the evil forces and he is one of the most popular idols in the Hindu
pantheon. It was believed that Hanuman is an avatar of Lord Shiva. He is worshiped as a
symbol of physical strength, perseverance and devotion. His tale in the epic of Ramayana
where he was assigned the responsibility to locate Rama’s wife Sita abducted by Ravana,
the demon king of Lanka.

Hanuman is depicted as an anthropomorphic monkey (vanaras) whose loyalty

and faith towards Lord Rama have come to exemplify the ideal for Bhakti (devotional)
followers of Hinduism. He is widely worshipped as a magical deity who has the ability to
conquer evil spirits. He is particularly popular with body-builders, since his life of celibacy
parallels the Hindu notion that sexual desires must be controlled in order to strengthen the
physical form. However, Hanuman remains most important in Hinduism as a prototype of
the ideal worshipper rather than as an object of worship.

In later Ramayanas, Hanuman is conceived to be the supreme devotee of

Rama. Hence, his devotion became the prototype for people who subscribed to bhakti
movement, a form of religious activity which espouses single-minded love and dedication
toward god. Ideal bhaktins dedicate every aspect of their life to the service of god,
attempting to recapitulate the devotion of Hanuman. Some Hindus believe that the easiest
way to attain Lord Rama is by worshipping Hanuman.
