When you meet a person, the first thing you do is usually saying ‘Hi’. There are
many ways to greet somebody in Russian. So, let’s start with more formal ways
which you can use with strangers or the elderly people.

After greetings we usually ask how the person is feeling and how the things are
going. Formal ways to ask smb’s state in Russian:
- Как у вас дела? How are you?
You can answer using one of the words below:
- Спасибо, отлично (Thanks, I’m great)
замечательно (I’m wonderful)
хорошо (I’m good)
 нормально (I’m okay)
неплохо (I’m not bad)
- А у вас как? (What about you?)
- Как поживаете? How are you doing?
For this question you might answer:
- Спасибо, всё отлично / замечательно/хорошо/ нормально (Thanks,
everything’s great/ wonderful/ good/okay)
- А Вы как?
Another question which might be handy if you know the person already is asking
about news:
- Что у вас нового? What’s news?
- Ничего нового. Nothing’s new
- Всё по-старому. Same old.
