Overview
ECO Singapore is organising an ECO Living Programme for blocks 1 to 8

at Lorong Lew Lian in conjuction with Braddell Heights Zone ‘B’
Residents’ Committee (RC) with volunteers from Starbucks.
ECO Living Programme is a community grassroots programme that aims

to relief the burden of low/ middle-income families while doing our bit
for the Earth. We will do this by performing energy, water and waste
audits in HDB households in order to identify and advise on areas for
improvement. It would be a yearlong programme that will continuously
engage residents and encourage them to make a commitment to
change.
This audit was the first one for Lorong Liew Lian and focused on the
theme of “energy”.
Objectives
 To conduct an energy audit for air-con, fan and refrigerator for

the residents
 To get residents to pledge a 6-month target for reduction in
energy consumption and performing energy-saving habits

volunteers in total turned up. At 9.30am, a final briefing

procedure to follow when visiting the residents. Finally, we did a role-

play to simulate a pair of volunteers visiting 2 residents.
Once the volunteers were clear on their tasks they were told to divide
into groups of 4, with a variety of language skills in each group. We had
pre-allocated the households to 19 groups of volunteers, with each
group assigned between 6 and 9 households.
At 10.15pm, the volunteers collected their logistics. Each group would

get a reusable bag containing the resident info sheets, energy audit
checklists, a lanyard, a clipboard, reminder medals, stickers, a help
sheet on how to conduct the audit, cards to give to the resident for
testing the fridge door seal and starbucks vouchers as reward for all
participating households.
The volunteers then fanned out to the various blocks.
By 11.45am, all the volunteers had completed their allocated units and
returned to the Community Hall.
After all the logistics were collected, a mass debrief was conducted. At
12.30pm, the programme officially ended.
Results
A total of 67 households went through the energy audit. Most of the rest
were not at home or were too busy.
Feedback
Many residents were eager to learn the energy-saving tips, while

volunteers also saw it as a great learning experience. A significant
number have indicated interest in continuing to volunteer on a personal
basis for the programme even after the end of Starbuck’s official
commitment.
However, the procedure for reading utilities bill and filling up the foms
can be further reemphasised in the next training and audit. The forms
can also be made more user-friendly for the volunteers.
