PID char(8) Institution ID. The permanent identification number (PID) is
unique, eight-digit number that is, as the name implies,
permanently assigned to each institution in the MDR database.
The number, once assigned, will not be changed or used for
any other building. If an institution closes, we close the PID
number with the institution. It will not be reused. Since the
PID number never changes, it is the best identifier to use for
1) updating MDR information 2) linking personnel to
institutions 3) exchanging data with MDR and 4)tracking
accounts within your database.

PARENTPID char(8) Direct Parent PID number represents the PID (Permanent
Identification Number) of the direct parent institution this
record reports to. For example, all institutions within this
district or sub-district will have the same Parent PID number.
UPID char(8) This 8-digit number represents the PID of the ultimate parent
institution this record reports to. For example- a school
reports to a sub-district (Parent PID) and that sub-district
reports to a main district. The PID of the main district is the
Ultimate Parent PID. All schools that report to a sub-district
will have the same ultimate parent PID. Not all institutions
will have an ultimate parent. Only those that report to a sub-
district will have an ultimate parent PID number.
DUNS_NUM char(9) Duns number is a distinctive nine-digit identification number
that is assigned to all records on the D&B database. It is the
universal numbering system used by many business-to-
business marketers. The Duns number MDR provides is
referred to as the site number.
UNIV char(2) Universe of which institution is a part- ie US Public Education
GROUP char(5) Defines related groups of institutions
SUBGROUP char(2) Defines further related groups of institutions
INST_TYPE char(2) Defines file type of institution
INST_SPEC char(2) Defines specific charactersitcis of some institutions
FICE decimal(6, FICE Number. This number is maintained on records on the
0) College file only. It identifies institutions accredited at the
college level by the Federal Interagency Commission on
Education (F.I.C.E.) which is recognized by the Secretary of
Education.
FIPS char(5) FIPS County Code Number. The FIPs code is a 5 digit federal
identification number that is used to identify states and
counties. This is the standard code that is used universally.

Carnegie Classification code based on the 2005 version- the
most current version available. The Carnegie Foundation is a
