A word from Warren East - CEO

ARM is described by some as the "jewel in the crown" of the UK's technology sector.
ARM technology is found all over the world in communications and entertainment, in
computing and information technology infrastructure, in industry, white goods, brown
goods, transport, medicine, and environmental products. Billions of consumers use
ARM powered products every minute of every day.
We operate at the centre of one of the most dynamic sectors in global industry today.
Digital electronics has been revolutionalising our lives in the workplace and in home
entertainment for over twenty years. Now enabled by ARM technology, digital
electronics is becoming part of our every day lives, making the world safer, simpler
and more sustainable for everyone.
As a business ARM is unlike traditional companies in the world of silicon chips. We
are neither a manufacturer nor a design services company. Instead we create our own
designs and sell licences to enable other companies to build upon those designs,
manufacture them and sell the resulting products. This gives us the opportunity to
work with the very best that the global semiconductor industry has to offer in each
and every market in which we are present. The result is scale unparalleled in the silicon
world. This year we estimate that our partners will manufacture and sell approximately
5 billion ARM microprocessor chips. ARM is listed on the London Stock Exchange and
NASDAQ; we are a FTSE 100 company. The scale and business model make ARM very
profitable so that we generate the resources to maintain a programme of continuous
investment in the future for ourselves and our customers.
About half of our revenue comes from royalties earned when our partners supply the
chips for the manufacture of electronic products such as phones or cameras. Therefore
we earn profit onlywhen our partners are successful. This sharing of risk and return is
very much a 21st century business model as we create and nurture a massive
community of technologists around our industry who live and breathe ARM.
To join ARM is to join this community at it's very heart. At our [30] global locations we
are looking for the visionaries of the future, a collection of special people doing special
things to help us build a better world. We value constructive behaviour and the ability
to deliver results. We value innovation, and our
working environment is one where individuals
value the output of the team and teams work
through trust and mutual respect. We expect
high standards and hard work. In return we offer
great training, fun and the opportunity to work
at the leading edge where semiconductor
technology meets the rest of the world. At ARM
you will see the results of your hard work in
billions of products in all corners of the globe,
leaving a positive impact on our society by
making life better for everyone.

used an ARM Powered® product. Our technology is at the heart of a wide range of processor-based chip
digital products for use at home, work or on the move.
Founded in 1990, as Advanced RISC Machines Ltd. ARM was a UK-based joint venture
between Apple Computer, Acorn Computer Group and VLSI Technology. Apple and
VLSI both provided funding, while Acorn supplied the technology. There were 12
founding ARM engineers with an objective of everybody should own at least 1 ARM.
ARM is now the world's leading semiconductor intellectual property (IP) supplier and
is at the heart of the development of digital electronic products. Headquartered in
Cambridge, UK, ARM has grown phenomenally over the recent decade and now
stands with over 1800 employees across the world. This allows us to create a dynamic
spectrum of career paths and opportunities, where personal development through
training and internal transfers is positively encouraged.
The ARM business model involves the designing and licensing of IP rather than the
manufacturing and selling of actual semiconductor chips. We licence IP to a network
of Partners which includes the world's leading semiconductor and systems companies
such as Microso, Nokia and Samsung Electronics. These Partners utilize ARM IP
designs to create and manufacture system-on-chip designs, paying ARM a license fee
for the original IP and a royalty on every chip or wafer produced. In addition to
processor IP and graphics processors, we provide a range of tools, physical and systems
IP to enable optimized system-on-chip designs.
ARM prides itself on being one of the best employers in the country, seeking to build
on this by attracting the best university talent to join the company through a number
of highly regarded and widely recognized schemes.
ARM has a distinct culture that is based on global collaboration and teamwork. The
values of Teamwork and Selflessness, Innovation, Personal Development, Delivery,
Constructive Pro-activity, Customer and Partner Focus and Responsiveness are all
mutually supportive of an environment that is conducive to innovation at every level.
The culture is open and meritocratic where everyone can make a real difference to
the business. Above all, we promote an organisation where we balance hard-work
and fun. From an employee perspective, our people strategy is summarised by us
committing to “a pan engaging environment for employees where we can fully
develop our personal and collective potential better than elsewhere.”

I did my Masters Thesis at ARM Sweden and aer that I was
very pleased to get offered employment as a Hardware
Designer for the ARM office in Lund, Sweden.
The office in Lund, Sweden develops the Mali VE products;
these are hardware solutions for video encoding/decoding with
a focus on low power consumption. Currently I am working as
a hardware engineer in the Mali VE6 project.
Before joining ARM I had always known ARM as being a
technology leader designing state of the art products. My first
project involved me being responsible for quite a central and
important part of the design in the Mali VE6 product. I received
a lot of coaching with this but it was very challenging being a
new graduate, it was also very satisfying to be given confidence
to do such an important task.
People at ARM are very skilled at what they are doing, this is
very inspiring and fun when developing new products that will
exist in many of tomorrow’s devices. Since ARM is the number
one leader in its field it puts a high requirement on the quality
of the products, this puts a big challenge on the engineers to
solve many problems and break barriers for what to be done.
ARM is a very open company and information sharing is
important. There are many events arranged by ARM to share
knowledge between employees and to get to meet new faces
from different sites around the world. As a new employee there
are also events arranged to introduce you into the company.
My personal opinion is that ARM has realized that their
employees are their biggest asset, therefore they try to make
sure that we are satisfied with our work, both in terms of
benefits but also as in working environment and company
culture.

I discovered ARM when I was doing my dissertation about RISC

processors as part of my degree in Athens. For me ARM was
representing one of the legends in RISC processor design so
when I finished my PhD and managed to get a Graduate
Engineer job in the Processor Division I felt blessed. Currently I
am solely responsible for designing the DPU in one of ARM’s
future applications cores.
What’s great about ARM is you always work on interesting yet
challenging tasks and with the ARM Feedback and Development
System (AFDS) you can, with the help of your manager, set your
goals and objectives and choose any training which will aid you
in achieving them. Through being personally involved in your
own targets and development, it ensures that you aren’t doing
things that aren’t interesting or relevant to you.

I had heard of ARM before I applied as I worked on ARM based

products at university. The ARM reputation is great and the
technology is cool. I am very lucky and the product I am
working on now is exactly what I proposed in my bachelors
dissertation.
A lot of the tasks I work on have only been done by a few
companies before, therefore there are not many documents
about how I should be doing something, it is great as it really
challenges me. My role at ARM is really enjoyable as I have
challenging tasks using cutting edge technology and it helps that
my colleagues are really knowledgeable and very friendly too.
I like the fact that I can socialize with my colleagues outside of
work as ARM has many social events. I have really enjoyed the
football and basketball clubs. Also the summer BBQ and
Christmas party are fun events to attend.

Being an electronics engineer working at ARM was like a dream
come true. Soon aer my BE I applied for Graduate Engineer
position at ARM, Bangalore. I worked for a year in Bangalore
aer this I decided to do my masters at Liverpool and received
a scholarship from ARM. I also had the opportunity to do my
project work as an intern in the Research group in Cambridge.
I was offered a graduate position at the end of my internship
and I readily accepted.
The best part of working in ARM is that you get the opportunity
to work on projects/products at their infant stage. You get to see
the whole lifecycle starting from its inception, to prototype,
leading to product development.
The requirements for a project change dynamically in the
research environment and in some cases you will have to work
on areas which demand a steep learning curve.
There are many social activities at ARM. We play football,
cricket, shuttle badminton and basketball every week; these
events are a wonderful opportunity to network with people
from other departments.
