Grammar: The Participle

Как в русском, так и в английском языке причастия бывают двух видов: действительное (Participle I) и страдательное
(Participle II). Participle II представлено всего одной формой представлено – III формой основного глагола.

bought – покупаемый, купленный studied – изучаемый, изученный

Participle I реализуется в нескольких формах, в каждой из которых имеется основной показатель такого причастия окончание
– ing. Простейшая форма Participle I - buying, studying. Этой форме в русском языке соответствует не только действительное
причастие «покупающий», «изучающий», но и деепричастие «покупая», «изучая», для которой в английском языке нет специальной
формы. Итак, формы Participle I следующие:

buying – покупающий, покупая being bought – будучи покупаемым

studying – изучающий, изучая being studied – будучи изучаемым
having bought – купив having been bought – будучи купленным
having studied – изучив having been studied – будучи изученным

В предложении причастия могут стоять как до, так и после определяемого слова. Но причастный оборот стоит только после
определяемого слова:
e.g.
The flying bird was very beautiful. The bird flying was very beautiful.
Но:
The bird flying in the sky was very beautiful.

Participle I может переводиться:

1) деепричастием;
(When) (While) Reading this story, he remembered his youth. – Читая рассказ он вспомнил свою юность.
2) обстоятельственным придаточным предложением;
(When) (While) Reading this story, he remembered his youth. – Когда он читал рассказ он вспомнил свою юность.
3) существительным с предлогом при-
(When) (While) Reading this story, he remembered his youth. – При чтении рассказа он вспомнил свою юность.

Упражнение 1. Переведите предложения на русский язык

1. A person bringing good news is always welcome. - Человек, приносящий хорошие известия, всегда
является желанным.
2. While skating yesterday he fell and hurt himself. - Катаясь вчера на коньках, он упал и ушибся
3. Having lived in this town all his life he knew it very well. – Живя в городе всю жизнь, он хорошо
знал его.
4. Books read in childhood seem like old friends. – Книги, прочитанные в детстве, кажутся старыми
друзьями.
5. Not knowing the way to the station, I asked a passer-by to show it to me. – Не знаю как пройти на
вокзал, я спросил прохожего показать мне.
6. The falling snow makes the landscape picturesque. - Падающий снег делает пейзаж живописным.
7. The moon hidden behind the clouds was hardly seen.- Луну, скрывшуюся за облаками, почти не
было видно.
8. Having booked a ticket, I went to the post office to send a telegram. - Забронировав билет, я пошел
на почту, чтобы отправить телеграмму.
9. Not knowing what to do I decided to consult a lawyer. - Не зная, что мне делать, я решил
посоветоваться с юристом.
10. Having arranged everything, we went home. – Решив все дела, мы поехали домой.
Упражнение 2. Образуйте все возможные формы причастий

to stop - stopped, stopping, having stopped, being stopped,

to forget – forgetting, forgotten, having forgotten, being
forgotten,

Упражнение 3. Переведите словосочетания, обратите внимание на особенность перевода причастий. В предложениях,

приведённых ниже, постройте причастия в соответствующей форме, раскрыв скобки

interested spectators - заинтересованные зрители interesting films - интересные фильмы

excited children - взволнованные дети exciting games – захватывающие игры
bored students- скучающие студенты boring lesson - скучный урок
burnt woods - сгоревший лес burning fires - горящие огни

 1. A crowd of excited people was watching the fireman trying to save the burning house.
2. During my vacation I came across several extremely interesting books.
3. “Which ones?” she asked in an interested voice.
4. “Why do you look so worried?” – “I’ve had a number of worrying telephone calls lately”.
5. I don’t know what was in the burned letter. I didn’t read it.
6. Nothing can save the sinking ship now, all we can do is to try to save the passengers.
7. It was an exciting incident.
8. After hearing the frightening tale, the frightened children wouldn’t fall asleep.
9. She spoke about this actor in an excited voice.
10. The typed letter was signed by the director.
11. The typing secretary is very busy, don’t interrupt her.

Упражнение 5. Замените придаточные предложения соответствующей формой причастия

2. While I was reading the book, I found a lot of new words. - While reading the book you gave me yesterday, I found a lot of new
words.
3. I live in a house which was built more than a hundred years ago.- I live in a house built more than a hundred years ago.
4. In this shop you can buy things which are made in different parts of the world. - In this shop you can buy things made in different
parts of our country.
5. Since I didn’t know my friend’s new address, I could hardly hope to find him.-Not knowing my friend’s new address, I could hardly
hope to find him
6. As I was busy, I couldn’t help them.- Being very busy, I couldn’t help them.
7. When I have arranged everything for the party, I went to bed. –Having arranged everything for the party, I went to bed
8. When we discussed the film, we quarreled. – Discussing the film, we quarreled.
