March 2011 Monthly Report

1. Student Legislative Council Meetings

SLC 68/31 March 1, 2011

• Absent - this meeting as the 5th Annual ISEEESA Networking Dinner was
the same evening, and I am on the executive team.

SLC 68/32 March 8, 2011

• Council voted to excuse my absence on Feb 15th due to Presidents’ Circle.
The standard was set early in the year that these meetings are to be
considered SU business.
• I voted along with a unanimous council to approve the quality money
allocations for the coming year. These values have since been printed in
the Guantlet, so details can be easily found there.
• Lauren Webber brought fourth a special funding request for the SU to run
our own Project Next workshop. After a lengthy discussion, council voted
17-0-0 to approve the funding. A report since has shown that the event ran
exceptionally well.

SLC 68/33 March 15, 2011

• Absent (excused) – The final AMSO Presidents’ Circle was the same night
as SLC. I will provide details later in this report.

SLC 68/33 March 22, 2011

• Council voted to excuse absence for both myself and Ms. Bradley for SLC
on March 15th as we both attended presidents’ Circle.
• Council nominated members to the Review and Tribunal boards. I voted in
the affirmative on both measures.

SLC 68/34 March 29, 2011

• CRO Sabrina Grover gave a presentation on the results of the election
and her recommendations going forward. There was some heated
discussion regarding a number of contentious topics, but the largest
positive takeaway was the 23% voter turnout from this election, something
credited as much to the candidates as to the SU and CRO.
• Council voted to deny an excusal motion for Arts rep Bhuvana
Sankaranaranan. The final vote was 13-6-1 under a secret ballot. I voted
to grant Bhuvana the excusal.
• Council discussed GRC recommendations for changes to the SU clubs
structure. I was outspoken on the fact that we need to carefully consider
the unique nature of academic clubs. The recommendations will return to
council next week.

2. Faculty Work (and connecting with constituents)

2010 SU General Election Haskayne Forum (March 7th 2011)
• As a current faculty rep, I took charge of organizing an all-candidates
meeting. Tom Hanger was unable to attend due to a previously-scheduled
obligation. All other candidates were present.

3. Committee Work
Presidents’ Circle (March 15th, 2011):
• I invited all outgoing and incoming Business/AMSO club presidents to
partake in pizza for this meeting. Outgoing Haskayne Rep Ashley Bradley,
and incoming Rep Sarah Nasser were both in attendance as well.
• I announced the pending deadlines for SU Club Awards and the SU
Teaching Excellence Awards, detailing what the winners would receive.
• The clubs all announced their upcoming events and discussed a number
of potential cross-club events that could be held for overall AMSO bonding
Haskayne Strategic Planning Committee (March 18th, 2011):
• This was the first meeting of the modified committee. Me, Nick Meehan,
and the CUS President are all now members of this committee.
• I raised a number of concerns brought up by Haskayne students. We also
discussed a number of topics that will be high priority once the B.Comm
program review begins.
• The team has been given a draft of the document to make edits to as we
go. If you are reading this and have suggestions please send them my
way at either of the addresses above.

4. Other
Strategic Plan meeting with Dean Waverman (March 18th, 2011):
• Me and Dr. Waverman sat down a few hours after the initial team
meeting and delved further into issues brought forward by Undergraduate
students, including the request by students that we ingrain program
flexibility.

5. Goals
Clubs trailer project (Executive Lead – James Delaney):
• This project is stalled until the summer. The sponsorship package is
on track to be completed and updated, and the potential exists that we will
be moving this project to a quality money proposal in the fall due to the
difficulty faced raising this volume of funding.
