ASIAN LAW STUDENTS' ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONAL BOARD

ALSA INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR 2011

Development and growth of the ASEAN countries have increased through the past decade that strengthens even stronger cooperation among them. Such cooperation in the ASEAN region has grown in frequency and not just limited to political affairs among each government, but also extended to the fields of other social concerns, such as law and human rights, economy, education, culture, and even national security. Being inspired by this condition, on 18th May 1989, a group of Indonesian Law Students came with the idea of forming an organization where they could foster better relations, as well as promote understanding and appreciation of different legal systems of ASEAN member countries, along with building friendship among other law students throughout ASEAN borders. The idea came to a realization by the establishment of ASEAN Law Students' Association (ALSA) in the very same year, with the members of Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines. The same associating spirit, in fact, was also felt by law students in the other part of Asia, which are the law students from Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. Thus, in the year of 1996, these young law students formed an organization under the name of Asian Law Students' Association (ALSA).

Globalization era, International trade and the rapid improvement of information technology as the mean of even a wider cooperation among Asian countries have motivated both associations, ASEANS law Students'network to the scope of the region of Asian countries. Therefore, by an agreement that was signed on 7th September 2002 in the Forum that was held by the Asian law Students' Association (Japan, Korea, Taiwan) was performed into one single association. As a result, it was agreed that such Tokyo Agreement have birth to a new international law students association representing all law students around Asia, under the name of the ASIAN LAW STUDENTS' ASSOCIATION (ALSA). Such agreement was taken into force by the Bangkok Agreement that was signed in the ALSA Conference, Bangkok, Thailand on 23rd October 2003 - along with the enrollment of China and Hong Kong as the members. Later, after the 2009 Forum \ conducted in the Philippines, Banglades had joined ASIAN LAW STUDENT ASSOCIATION (ALSA) as its member. Additionally, the ALSA Forum 2010 in Korea, it is very honor that Brunei become one its newest member.

Thus, until this current time, ALSA has the following official members:

Bangladesh, Brunei, China, Hongkong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan. Up to the current time ALSA is embarking a programmatic approach in extending its membership to other Asian countries to ensure on the existence of a broad perspective in the very spirit of ALSA.

"Prepering for a New Age of Diplomacy, Dispute Resolution, and Clients Relationship"

Inspired by the current affairs in international relations and law which are currently faced by various challenges, it creates a question on how are the ways of countries in fostering cooperations in public related matters or cooperation that involves economical interests of the countries. The diplomacy also includes the way for countries resolving disputes, such for disputes that directly affect the country or that affect the world society. Understanding the needs of equipping future leaders with such knowledge the expert of the matters will elucidate the current trends of diplomacy.

Adding the skills of handling clients and as well as for understanding the breakthrough in the world of dispute resolution, especially the alternative ones. Arbitration has been able take the lead in alternative dispute resolution, and the current law students who are interested in the field of arbitration required to understand the methods of arbitration much further. This shall include the way for counsels to relate to their clients which play important role in mastering and practicing the theories of dispute resolution.

Overall, it is important for the law students to equip themselves with skills to face a problem which is not a problem today. The three topics in the theme, together will allow them to equip such skills and to broaden their mind to find bigger opportunities for carrer and to further understand their study of law. Same opportunities are offered as well to the professionals to empower the future leaders and to share great experiences to be shared.
