MODULE4
1. Derive winkler bach formula for a curved bar.
2. Derive the equation for neutral axis for a rectangular, circular and trapizoidal section.
3. Determine the ratio of the numerical values of σmax and σmin for a curved bar of rectangular
section in pure bending if distance to centroidal axis is 5cm and the height of the section is 4cm.
(Ans : 1.76 )
4. Find the maximum tensile stress in the curved part of the hook shown in the figure below. The
diameter of the c/s is 6cm ,the radius of curvature of the interior part of the hook is
8cm,inclination of the load is 45o. (Ans : 223.3 MPa)
5. A curved bar has an isoceles triangular section with the base of the triangle in a concave face.
Develop the expression for the distance to the neutral axis of the section.
(Ans : ro=3h2/2{(3R+2h)log[(3R+2h)/(3R-h)]-3h} )
MODULE5
1. Derive the expressions of radial and circumferential stress variation in a thick cylinder.
2. Explain Shrink-fit in a composite cylinder.
3. Why a composite disc-cylinder arrangement loosen up when the speed of rotaion increases.
4. Determine the dimensions of a two piece composite tube of optimum dimensions if the internal
pressure is 196 Mpa, external pressure is zero, internal radius is 8cm and E = 196 Gpa. The
maximum shear stress is to be limited to 147 Gpa. Check the strength according to the
maximum shear theory.
(Ans : r2 =14 cm, r3 = 24 cm,Δ =0,014 cm,pc=49030 kPa )
