1. Derive Cauchy's stress equations.

5. If the displacement field is given by ux=k(x2+2z), uy= k(4x+2y2+z),uz=4kz2, k is a very small
constant.What is the strain in te direction nx=ny=nz= 0.577.

6. Verify whether the following strain field satisfies the equations of compatibility. P is a constant.

2. Derive the equation for neutral axis for a rectangular, circular and trapizoidal section.
3. Determine the ratio of the numerical values of σmax and σmin for a curved bar of rectangular
section in pure bending if distance to centroidal axis is 5cm and the height of the section is 4cm.

4. Find the maximum tensile stress in the curved part of the hook shown in the figure below. The
diameter of the c/s is 6cm ,the radius of curvature of the interior part of the hook is
8cm,inclination of the load is 45o. (Ans : 223.3 MPa)

5. A curved bar has an isoceles triangular section with the base of the triangle in a concave face.
Develop the expression for the distance to the neutral axis of the section.

1. Derive the expressions of radial and circumferential stress variation in a thick cylinder.
2. Explain Shrink-fit in a composite cylinder.
3. Why a composite disc-cylinder arrangement loosen up when the speed of rotaion increases.
4. Determine the dimensions of a two piece composite tube of optimum dimensions if the internal
pressure is 196 Mpa, external pressure is zero, internal radius is 8cm and E = 196 Gpa. The
maximum shear stress is to be limited to 147 Gpa. Check the strength according to the
maximum shear theory.
