Losing weight

I completed the seven-day General Motors weight loss and system-cleansing diet last Sunday.
Here’s what happened from Day 1 to Day 7.

Day 1. This was Monday last week. My wife Menchu thought of doing this diet to start the new year
with a clean and healthy slate. The first day was a breeze. It was eat all the fruits you want, except
bananas. The program suggested consuming lots of melons, especially watermelon and cantaloupe,
to prepare your body for the next six days.

I had pineapple and papaya for breakfast. I added melon for lunch and took in the entire variety for
dinner. I also drank at least 10 glasses of water – a daily requirement. Surprisingly, I didn’t get
hungry throughout the day.

Day 2. I didn’t particularly enjoy eating only raw and cooked vegetables. There was no limit to what
you could eat. For breakfast, I had a large boiled potato which was stipulated. For lunch, I ate
cabbage, string beans and carrots. For dinner, I consumed two orders of Chowking’s kangkong with
bagoong. Again, I drank at least 10 glasses of water during the day.

The boiled potato had to be taken in the morning and was for carbohydrates to provide energy and
balance. The rest of the day was for vegetables which are virtually calorie-free. The vegetables also
kicked in essential nutrients and fiber.

Day 3. Any combination of fruits and vegetables was the menu. Any amount, any quantity but still
no bananas. Potatoes were eliminated because the fruits took care of the carbohydrates. I mixed
what I had in the previous two days. I added squash in my choice of vegetables. The idea is to
choose your favorite fruits and vegetables without forcing yourself to eat what you don’t like. As
usual, I gulped down at least 10 glasses of water.

I covered a PBA game for TV that night and I found myself running back and forth to the restroom
during timeouts to get rid of the liquids in my body. It felt good to be relieved and I realized this
was part of the cleansing process. Theoretically, my body was now prepared to start burning excess
pounds.

Day 4. I didn’t mind the menu for the day – eight bananas and three glasses of milk. I love bananas
– any kind – and I drink a lot of milk, with or without this diet. I usually eat Kellogg’s Special K red
berries cereal, drenched in Magnolia low-fat milk, for breakfast. So I substituted the cereal with two
bananas to start the day.

For lunch, I had three bananas and another glass of Magnolia low-fat milk. Lunch was a struggle
because I was tempted to eat sumptuous Chinese food at Fortune restaurant in Tarlac but I just
took my mind off what was on the table. However, I brought home some leftovers which I stored in
the freezer at home before finally feasting on the food last night.

For dinner, I ate the balance of two bananas and drank another glass of milk. I slept that night
thinking of what I missed for lunch at Fortune. Diet promoters said the eight bananas were for the
potassium and sodium lost the last three days. Also, they mentioned the people with a sweet tooth
will begin to develop a loss of craving for sweets.

Day 5. This was the worst menu – six whole tomatoes, a cup of rice and at least 12 glasses of water
the entire day to cleanse the system of the uric acid it will be producing.

According to dieticians, the rice is for carbohydrates and the tomatoes, for digestion and fiber. The
water is to purify the system. You may eat less than a cup of rice but the six tomatoes are non-
negotiable.

I skipped breakfast this day and for lunch, I had three tomatoes and a half cup of rice. I spread lots
of bagoong on my rice and put soy sauce on the tomatoes. I did the same for dinner. At the end of
the day, I swore I wouldn’t eat a tomato for a year. I couldn’t believe I survived the ordeal. I think I
slept that night with my eyes open.

Day 6. The diet stipulated a cup of rice and all the vegetables, cooked or uncooked, you could eat.
The program said the body will derive vitamins and fiber from the vegetables and carbohydrates
from rice. At this stage, the body would be in a total weight loss inclination.

For lunch, I had something like pinakbet, with lots of string beans and squash, and a half cup of
bagoong rice. For dinner, I ate a Mongolian vegetable dish with a half cup of rice. Again, I had at
least 10 glasses of water.

Day 7. Nearing the homestretch, I felt this was do-or-die just like the San Miguel Beer-Barangay
Ginebra game that night. The menu was a cup of rice, all the vegetables you could eat and a glass
of fruit juice.

I ate the same thing for lunch as the day before and finished a bottle of orange juice. For dinner, I
consumed two orders of Chowking’s kangkong with bagoong and a half cup of rice. The diet
promoters said you could celebrate the end of the diet with a glass of white wine or champagne but
I chose not to.

For the record, it was allowed to take a particular type of “wonder” soup any time during the seven-
day program. The recipe for the soup is – water 22 ounces, six large onions, two green peppers,
three whole tomatoes, small size cabbage and a bunch of celery with herbs and seasoning to be
added as desired. I never took the soup.

The result on my body? I lost exactly 10 pounds in seven days. Now, the challenge is to keep my
weight to where it is. I’d hate to let one week of sacrifice go to waste
